Anxious to see the numbers.

But he was the most important resign for this team IMO.

I'm anxious to see if there's any hip injury language in it.

Perhaps all the competition to sign him forced us to assume that risk. Would anyone insure a contract like this?

I think Napoli really wanted to stay here. He's the biggest right handed threat on the team, played flawless defense, and was one of the big "clubhouse" guys.

I'd think the number will be 3/40ish. Just based on the market. But I don't see them being much more because this front office just isn't making big deals right now.

Well, we don't know yet what "this" is, do we?

I'm guessing/hoping 2 guaranteed at pretty good money (say 2/30) plus a couple of vesting years. Something like that.

Barring a crazy contract, I'm really happy he's coming back.

EDIT:2/32 is a pretty great deal

I would have been very upset to see him go. Welcome back Mike. Get the man some beers and maybe an extra shirt.

Wow, considering the contracts that have been dished out the last 48 hours.... absolute steal.

You won't be able to find anyone complaining about this deal.

Why would he only sign a 2 year deal? I really thought he was due for 3/$45.

The man wants to be part of defending the title.

So Napoli ends up with 3/$45M instead of the 3/$39M he originally agreed to last year.

This is the second time Mike Napoli was obviously going to be with the Red Sox, no wait, nevermind, not going to happen, no wait, just signed on for way, way less than I expected in the same year.

Yep, and good for him. That's what he deserves for, not bitching, understanding the situation, and producing.

Most important free agent. Check.
Added bullpen arms. Check.

This is an absolutely absurd deal. What the Red Sox have been able to do with roughly $50 million dollars TOTAL is remarkable in this market.

It's amazing how many twists and turns a teams future could take. An hour ago I was saying how hard it would be to pay a price you're not comfortable paying when you also factor in the possibility of obtaining an extra draft pick if you choose to go in a different direction instead of matching.

Literally, the only way Napoli was going to be back with this team is he took the hometown discount.

Love you, Nap.

I never thought they could get him signed for less than three years. This is a great deal for the team, and nice for Napoli that he winds up exceeding his original, pre-physical deal.

And $32 million would buy a lot of shirts - if Napoli wore shirts.

Yup. After all the back and forth, and FA spread over 2 years, Nap does quite nicely for himself.

16 AAV is pretty steep, was hoping at the end of the year to get him for more like 2/26.  But considering the other deals given out, 2/32 sounds good to me.  Overpay a bit to keep the years down (though in this market, might not be much of an overpay).  Glad they managed to not go 3 or 4 years.

2/32 is terrific.  Great job, Ben.  And I love a guy who clearly wants to come back as much as Nap does.
Couldn't agree more. Didn't want to go three, but I'm happy with this deal. I'm ecstatic about his attitude about coming back.

Very happy with this deal.  We ended up paying an extra $6m for seeing that he was a great fit and his hip wasn't an issue.  Get a guy we really can use for now, without years or dollars that hurt our flexibility.  Welcome back Mike.

Exactly. That probably made it easier for Napoli to see it as a win--he's still better off than he was a year ago, never mind the ring.

And passing on more money from Texas is really going to cement his place in the lore. He's the anti-Ellsbury (unfair to Jacoby, no doubt, but still).

40 Man is full, so a trade or DFA has to accompany the signing.

Good point. Would be mighty pleasing to see a reasonable Kemp trade. Then Ben can go and fully enjoy Florida.

It's a good deal for both parties.  Napoli will still have a chance at another payday after 2 years in a good park to put up numbers, Red Sox avoid the risk of a longer term deal.

I do expect some regression from his 367 BABIP though

That would be one Uncle Dirt -- by no means a small move in my view. But I think he's the next to climb back aboard.

Hope you're right.  Very much hoping he's back.
