The 718
Plus, Moshiri's hiring of Rafa was such a disaster, and the other candidates who were still in contention when Frank was hired were so bad, it could have been a lot worse.

Pep managed Barcelona B for a year before taking over the first team. Zinedine didn’t have that much more experience before taking over at Real Madrid.
That was a lifetime ago in terms of what coaches do these days. I'd also argue those are the exceptions but maybe I'm wrong.

I don't think anyone has accused Zidane of being a great manager...he can obviously man manage the best team in the world, and there's a lot of value there, but I don't know that any old star can do that. He feels like a fairly unique situation (as does Pep).

I always liked Frank and I've always liked Everton- I'm glad you feel like it's working out...I'm rooting for it too work. But I think the bar was set so low with Rafa that anything looks good. I watched Lampard be mediocre at Derby, watched him be mediocre at Chelsea, and I don't watch as closely as you but 15th place with 2 wins on the year doesn't feel any better than mediocre at best. For your sake I hope I'm wrong.

I think this is a pretty interesting discussion idea that you've kicked off. Trying to look at the coaches that have gone quickest from players to leading some of the top clubs from the top of my head, you've got:
  • Xavi at Barcelona. He coached for 2.5 years for the Qatari league before making the jump to Barca.
  • Arteta at Arsenal. 3 years under Pep at Man City is probably a pretty damn good apprenticeship though I believe he was considered for the Arsenal role two years earlier when they ultimately hired Unai Emery.
  • Lampard with a year at Derby before taking over Chelsea.
  • Zidane - 1 year as Real Madrid Assistant, 2 years as Real B manager before becoming the Real Madrid manager.
  • Gerrard. 1 year of Liverpool U18 and U19. 3 years at Rangers before taking over Aston Villa. This actually seems like possibly the least egregious of the above coaches.

Add Pirlo to the list. Starts his coaching badges August 2019, becomes Juventus U23 manager July 2020, Becomes Juventus manager September 2020 four days after getting his license. Probably more egregious than most on that list, but got away with it because he seems like a sophisticated intellectual manager.

Y'all ignoring Pirlo? 9 days at Juve U23, a season with the senior club, and now in 13th place with Fatih Karagümrük in Turkey?

The sample size is too small compared to the number of variables involved.

Pirlo Pals!

Given Allegri's issues since, I am not convinced that Pirlo was really the problem, but he sure as shit wasn't the solution.

I didn't realize Gerrard was at Rangers that long...you're correct that mutes my point somewhat. I think I maybe fell into the mixing up Gerrard/Lampard trap?
