Halfway through the season at 5-4, it's time to give out some grades....

Quarterbacks: C
I had higher hopes for Mac Jones coming into this year. He's made a few nice throws but has made a bunch of terrible ones. Seems skittish in the pocket. It's difficult to separate him from the O-line struggles, but either way, he hasn't been good this year. Credit goes to Bailey Zappe for being a rookie thrown into the fire, and he does give the team some energy. BUT...he really isn't that good at this point. Still, what more can you ask of a guy in his position?

Running backs: B
Damien Harris is a really solid NFL running back, but his absence has been noteworthy this year. Not running as well as he did last year, but he's still good. As for Rhamondre Stevenson, I consider him to be one of the better overall RBs in the NFL, he's having a terrific season in every way.

O-line: D
Really been a struggle for this unit. Penalties, penalties, penalties. Struggles against good defensive lines (though that shouldn't be surprising). There's some ability there but also they have a lot of trouble, especially with anchor David Andrews out. Easily, to me, the most disappointing aspect of the team.

Tight ends: C-
They've had their moments, which have been terrific. But too often there's just not much happening with these guys. Very little game impact so far this year.

Wide receivers: B-
I like this group. Each has had good moments. I still don't get why Bourne isn't playing much, because whenever he does play he seems to do something positive. Meyers is a solid pro. Parker had some great moments. I love Thornton's potential.

Defensive line: A
On the whole, this group has done really well. Edge rushers Wise, Judon, and Uche have really gotten after the QB. The fatties in the middle have for the most part held up nicely this year so far. Encouraging signs from this unit.

Linebackers: B-
Some good moments, and it's a heck of a lot faster unit than last year's group. But they still make a lot of mistakes. Nonetheless, on the whole, it's been a pretty good group.

Cornerbacks: A
Love this group. Not without mistakes, but man, it's been a good group. Love Jack Jones. Jonathan Jones has been really good when he's been out there. Mills is solid. Bryant isn't good but we knew that already.

Safeties: B
Duggar is fantastic unless he's asked to cover a really good receiver. McCourty has lost a step but is still a savvy veteran out there. Peppers is starting to really shine. I like this group.

Special teams: B
Strong A for Nick Folk, who continues to be a kicking machine. But Bailey has been pretty bad. Booms some, but then just really struggles a lot too. The returns of Marcus Jones give me hope in that aspect of the game.

Coaching: C
I just can't give them a better grade than this. On the one hand, they're doing wonders with a roster that MOST experts think is bereft of real NFL talent. On the other, they can't seem to do much in terms of offensive play calling (some might say their play calling is incredibly offensive), and they just can't seem to fix the offensive line struggles, which appear to be contributing to Mac's problems. I felt that mission #1 for this team was to help Mac take the next step of his development, and it appears to my untrained eye that it's gone the other way.

OVERALL GRADE: C+/B-
After all, they are 5-4 and are *thisclose* to a playoff spot. They're a slightly better than average team, which means they get a slightly better than average grade.

I'd give the D - Line a B and Linebackers a C+ as we still give up too many rushing yards but otherwise in general agreement with your assessment.

Going by the numbers, "C" is an awfully generous QB grade.

The QB play has been bad and a majority of this board was saying how talentless this team was to begin the year. They are 4-3 and the coaching gets a C? The coaching has been good. Quibble all you want with the play calling, but the coaching staff in total has been very good. I Would give them a B at least thus far.

I think you’re being overly generous with the WRs. I’d give them a C-. Agholor fumbles. Bourne has been a human formation penalty, has run some poor routes, and also has fumbled. Parker and Meyers have also gotten signals crossed repeatedly on routes. Thornton is still very raw. Not great.

Ranking the offensive position groups, I’d go:
1. RBs (B+) - good production overall
2. QB (C) - maybe a generous grade, but there’s more wrong with the other position groups that the QBs can’t overcome
3. TEs (C-) - invisible blockers, little impact as pass catchers
4. WRs (C-) - bad routes, brain farts, ball security all persistent issues
5. OL (F) - RT and LG a joke at present. C passable. RG, LT okay. Cohesion and execution almost nonexistent.

My take:

Offense
1. RBs (B+) A for Rhamondre, C+ for Damien et. al.
2. QB (C-) D for Mac, B- for Zappe
3. TE (C)
4. WR (C-)
5. OL (D)

Defense
1 CB (A)
2. DL (A-)
3. S (B)
4. LB (B-)
5. ST (C+) A- for Folk, B+ for Marcus Jones, D for Bailey

Coaching
1. Head Coach (B+) Don't understand what his thinking is at QB, but he's the GOAT. The job he's done on defense (aside from the BAL and CHI games) has been remarkable
2. Offense (D)
3. Defense (B+) Some riding the head coach's coattails here
4. Special Teams (C-) Folk doesn't need coaching

I feel like I’ve been pretty negative lately. I hate being negative. Let’s celebrate what’s good.
RB - A. Rhamondre is a pro-bowl caliber back who does it all.
RG - A. Onwenu actually got the all-pro nod from the Athletic. And yet I wonder if they don’t move him to RT because that’s been such an issue once again having Onwenu carry more than his fair share of weight seems like possibly the best option of some bad ones.

Judon and Jack Jones deserve accolades here too. Judon is certainly an all-pro and having himself a DPOY season.

I generally agree with most of the above,
I'd be tempted to go D for QBs, Mac has been one of the worst starters in the league, Zappe gets a decent grade though I guess because of the scale.
I think coaching is too low. The defensive coaching has been excellent, we have put a secondary that basically every expert was deeply concerned about and turned it into a strength using a bunch of rookies and guys who were never considered top talent.
On the offensive side, the playcalling hasn't been great, but they've tried things, some of it has just been line and QB execution. Line coaching I guess is a concern.

Generally agree, though I'd grade the QB lower (D; F for Mac, who's regression is unacceptable this year and a C for Zappe) and the defense overall as an A (Though I agree with the general rankings and the note on the linebacker play).

The patriots have a top 5 defense this year, in terms of expected points allowed (#1), QB passing (ANYA, #1), percentage of drives scored against (#4/5), percentage of turnovers against (also #4/5), and total pts allowed (#6). I'd argue that the defense would look even stronger if not for QB fatal plays and mediocre ST play, leading to favorable position in opposing drives (#24 in the league). They do have a weakness for mobile QBs, which is driven by weak linebacker play against the run (see: Fields and Jackson, both of whom are poor and mediocre arms respectively).

The patriots have one of the worst offenses, with both our passing (#22 by expected points) and rushing offenses (#24 by expected points!) ranking poorly overall. Much of this can be attributed to the poor line play (10 sacks in the last two games on Mac; 4.1 YPA for rushing despite having Rhamondre, who's success should be counted even more strongly against the line), however, Mac does not get enough blame for his own regression (prior 4 games Mac already had 7 turnovers with only 5 sacks total; the line "played" much better under Zappe, which makes me wonder how much of the observed poor play is due to poor coordination by Mac ).
