Talk about virtue signaling, what about the finger predictably pointed at the sky by the majority of Chavis' teammates after tagging a home run?

It's become so ubiquitous these days we barely notice it, but what message are the players trying to send? "Thank you Lord for liking me better than the other guys" or "'God, thanks for taking time off from the pandemic to help me hit a dinger." Maybe "I'm number one you're two through twenty-five" or "I'm just a humble vessel. It was God himself who went bridge" or perhaps "I knew that giant crucifix I always wear would be good for something." Whatever it is, it seems somehow irrelevant and disrespectful towards humble religious faith and belief.

It's a good thing we seldomly had to witness Chavis' homerun tribute in his brief stay.

How do you know they are pointing to God - perhaps a deceased relative?

Why do people assume to know what others are thinking...or what others may or may not do in their own private life?

I just don't get the Chavis hate. Maybe hate that he sucked for us, but the other stuff...its just odd. Sometimes people actually do believe in whatever they believe in and its not in act and its not meant to offend others.

He's gone, best of luck in Pittsburgh.

I think its odd that baseball fans get upset when baseball players praise God or act "patriotic." That's 90 % of baseball white guys. Chavis is not unique in that at all.

I don't know about patriotic, but athletes in general always praise God, not just the white ones.

I always laughed at it, because if "God" wanted them to win, he (or She) actively wants them to lose too.

Certainly.

However, we live in a secular civil society which expressly tolerates religious pluralism, and in that toleration, there are certain mores and social rules. One can certainly over-signal in relation to those. You seem to be confusing people mocking signaling with people mocking someone's religious belief. (The latter of which, AFAIK, is not what any of the posters here are saying.)

I'd say more but as was suggested upthread, if you want a response, best use a different board for the discussion.

I don't recall anyone being upset with David Ortiz for pointing to the sky after home runs, nor for wearing Dominican flag accessories with his uniform.

That never bothered most of us, and neither did anything Chavis did. Baseball players represent lots of different faiths and lots of different countries, it's one of the cool things about the sport.

Athletes also "virtue signal" for lots of things. When posters on SOSH complain about the "virtue signaling" athletes do on behalf of liberal causes, that tends to not go over well, and this shouldn't either. Your posting here comes off like someone who simply hates a player because he has different beliefs than you, and you can't or don't want to admit that.

If anybody would suggest that I posted above because I hate a player with different beliefs than my own, that is a gross, insulting misreading of what I wrote. I'm out now, out of respect for Sosh rules.

I have already answered you on this point. Beyond that, you're welcome to PM me, or to begin a thread in the appropriate forum.

I’m going to lock this, other places to talk about any aspect of this that you’d like to.
