Why hasn't he been playing 2B in the minors? Wasn't that always his clearest path to playing time on the ML club?

What does Devers playing third have to do with why Chavis hasn't played much second?
Yeah, I feel like I was replying to a different conversation in my head. He's been playing 3B in the minors but is blocked by Devers if they see him as a 3B. My logic was that he isn't if Devers is their long-term solution at the position.

So basically I was agreeing with the original poster but with extraneous information.

Sorry, I'm bored as hell at work and I think it's getting to me.

If his defense is below average can this team really run out a defense with a butcher at third and Chavis at second? Seems dicey considering how poorly the pitching staff has performed to date. I suppose he can't be much worse than Nunez though. My guess is they'll play Chavis for six and sub in Lin if they somehow manage to get a lead going into the late innings.

I hope that Chavis plays regularly. Obviously, all hitters adapting to a higher level will benefit from regular bats but I assume Chavis who has high K-rate tendencies may benefit even more from consistent ABs than a contact hitter type.

Second base slash line through 19 games is 136/186/152. I’m willing to pay the “learn on the job” price to see what happens at the plate.

Could Chavis platoon with Devers and practice/get coaching at 2nd? If Devers finds his bat, maybe platoon Chavis with Lin after some express coaching?

Looks like Lin will be playing second and Chavis will be filling in at first and third. I kind of hate this because of the pressure it'll put on him day to day defensively, but maybe this is the best way to ensure Chavis gets a lot of ABs while he's up.

I kinda want Lin to get PA too. Interesting him and Chavis both turned their careers around in 2017 after a few years of struggling.

they're not planing to play him much, until one of Nunez/Pedey is ready to come off. but what if he sticks? what if he's better than Devers right now at 3rd?

Chavis was drafted as a shortstop, played a lot of third in the minors. If you can play shortstop, you can play anywhere. He needs more than five games at second, as RedOctober noted, but Pedey’s latest knee twinge and Nunez’s neck injury sort of forced Boston’s hand....
The last time I thought/wrote this, the team had just signed Hanley. So, um, yeah. I think you mean this: If you can play shortstop well, you can play anywhere.

I don't really see the point of playing him at 3B, even in the short term. If Devers can't cut it there over time, Dalbec is next up, and Devers would presumably move to 1B.

I can't imagine Chavis could be a worse hitter OR fielder than Nunez.

I also believe if you play SS you can play second base with very little training, by the way Pedroia was also a shortstop in college.

Hanley got too big, and weight may be a problem for Chavis. He is a stumpy looking player, listed at 5-10 and 215. He moves pretty well around the bag but the night I saw him in Pawtucket, last Thursday, he was tentative chasing pop flies. Of course, the wind was blowing pretty good. He has good hands, turned a couple DPs on the home stand. The ball will find him in the field. I still believe a shortstop can play second or third adequately at first, and better with game experience.

Add Holt to your slash collection, since he's going to be eligible to return sooner. Last report I saw was possibly on Monday when the team comes back from the road trip.

Making the switch to second base, you have to learn to turn the double play without seeing the runner who's coming in to break up the DP.

The Utley rule might make this easier than it was back in the day.

The thing is he can't play SS, not at a professional level anyway. He played SS in high school and Pedey played SS at ASU, that is a slight difference in level of play.

He just doesn't look like a guy who could play 2B to me, maybe he can but I see a future 1B/DH.

Charlie Morton and Tyler Glasnow next two nights. If you're looking for spots to put Chavis in, here are Moreland's and Devers' stats against both pitchers

Moreland vs. Morton - 3 for 7, 2B and HR
Moreland vs. Glasnow - 1 for 3, 2B

Devers vs. Morton - 1 for 4, 2B
Devers vs. Glasnow - no plate appearances

Sooooo maybe Sunday at 3B? Unless Moreland needs a day off on the turf than let Chavis play 1B on Sunday?

Hard to see him getting a start until the Detroit games if the current starters are healthy I think. This seems like a pretty high pressure series for the team.

109.1 mph exit velocity, 17 degree launch angle, 401 ft on his first hit, for anyone wondering. Came on a 99 mph fastball.

Two days ago Cora said he wasn't quite ready to play 2b. Today's he's starting at 2b. The next long-term plan this team sticks to will be the first .

He’s 5-10.
You saw him at the ballpark, close enough to tell if the 5'10 is "generous"? Re 5'10 first baseman, Steve Garvey comes to mind first. He won a gold glove in each of his first four full time seasons at first, so 5'10 is possible at first. Still have to have the athleticism though.

I hear you, but there are plans and then plans necessitated by reality. The truth is, he wouldn't be in the majors at all yet if it weren't because multiple other plans had failed, mostly because of injury.

Two days ago, they anticipated Holt would be back shortly. Yesterday, they shut him down again. They can't run Lin out there every game until Holt or Nunez or Pedroia comes back. What's the alternative? Vazquez again?
