For some reason I can't hear it. But by reading the tweet I get the message and it is incredibly misguided and offensive.

College kids like the author of that Tweet have a lot to learn if Rob Manfred Esq. was trying to lawyer his way around a social justice movement and it elicited a "holy sh!t". Anyone familiar with Manfred would likely be far more shocked if he took a thoughtful approach to this issue.

Manfred isn’t the one caught on a hot mic. Van Wagenen is the one caught making an accusation against Manfred.

I should add that while we might agree with him, he has badly damaged himself here. Given that he has exposed the Commissioner to ridicule and put his owner in a very tight spot, I would not be surprised if this ends up being a career-killer for BVW.

Regardless, the thread title really should be changed to accurately reflect what happened here.

Edit: thank you.

is it any better? “Pull a social awareness stunt” seemed like the problematic part. What does that even mean?

The Mets’ ownership situation is rather tenuous at the moment, so I doubt there would be a drastic change like firing the general manager before new owners assume control of the club. Moreso, such a delay would at least allow for the appearance that BVW was being fired for errors like the Kelenic trade rather than causing the commissioner to incur much-deserved humiliation. For BVW to face consequences commensurate with or worse than Brennaman would shine a very poor light upon baseball’s ultimate decision makers.

I don’t mean to sound insensitive or anything, and this was a dumb idea, but isn’t that just Manfred just doing his job? I’m sure Bettman and Silver also brainstorming ideas to potentially keep from stopping play.

I don't even understand what Manfred is trying to accomplish here. Is he REALLY trying to keep the MLB schedule on track? In an already fucked up COVID-19 season, where they're going to play a maximum of 60 games, team infections and double header makeups abound? Why risk your relationship with the players like that over one lousy game?

I bet they aren't trying to convince a team as to the best way to protest. Listen to the players and help create solutions that achieve multiple goals. Silver gets it.

Manfred is the worst. Impressive considering Goodell and Bettman are around. His comments regarding handing off the trophy to an owner and not a player were “chefs kiss” perfect.

42 seconds was for Jackie Robinson's number, in case that wasn't clear to anyone.

It's not how I would have phrased it, but the tweet quoted in the opening post refers to it as a "social awareness stunt," so it's not an inaccurate characterization of the event. And to be clear, the "event" here is the Mets GM caught on a hot mic disparaging the commissioner's leadership.

This is what I was referring to originally. Manfred is pissed at BVW. (The Wilpons as well.)

Edit: And for the record, given the specificity and personal nature of his criticisms, I don't believe the "clarification" issued by BVW for a second.
The Wilpons released a statement that spelled the name of BVW wrong multiple times!
