I guess his agent Noah Syndergaard had an impact with some public comments yesterday:

"Jake's the best pitcher in baseball right now. I think he deserves whatever amount he's worth. I want to keep him happy, so when it does come time for him to reach free agency, he stays on our side pitching for the Mets. I just think they should quit all this fuss and pay the man already," Syndergaard told reporters Sunday.

He said he was surprised that a deal hasn't been struck between deGrom and the team.

"If there wasn't a trend of other guys getting contract extensions, I don't know what the circumstance would be. But you can see Chris Sale, Verlander, those guys getting extensions. I think it's time Jacob gets one, too."
Well Noah, got anything else that you think needs resolving?

I am pretty surprised that so many pitchers are extending. Free agency might be scary but it still looks like its working out for the big names.

deGrom is already 30 and was under control this year and next. Makes a ton of sense for him to lock in this kind of money now rather than hope his arm doesn't fall off in the next two seasons. Verlander's deal also makes sense, given his elite performance but advancing age and his obvious desire to continue playing for a really good team. Same with Sale (who, although he's younger than the other two, is coming off a mortality-reminding shoulder issue). Those deals all made more sense to me than, say, Nola's.

So the Mets did something smart? Amazin'! In addition to being the right baseball move, I think this may be a shot of encouragement to the fan base & the clubhouse. The Mets have some decent position prospects/young MLB'ers so I'll be interested to see if they try to keep their SP core intact. Wheeler a FA after 2020 and Thor & Matz in 2022.

A lot can happen in a season. I'm sure Craig Kimbrel and Dallas Keuchel were both expecting lucrative deals around this time last year.

As the Mets did something smart for once this means his arm will fall off sometime around April 15.

Via Bob Nightengale:

“Jacob deGrom has $52.5 million deferred without interest in his new contract, reducing its value from $137.5 million to $108.9 million.”
