Eppler's history with a meddling owner and having to work around albatross contracts isn't too good. Hopefully for his sake Lindor and Cano give him more than Pujols did.

You guys are treating this like just another personnel hire, which would be correct if it was any other franchise, but it's the Mets, so:

1) Alderson and Eppler are the last two guys who hired Mickey Callaway (currently banned from baseball through 2022), good job looking outside the old boys network. At least Callaway knows he has a pitching coach job waiting for him in 2023.

2) Eppler is very good friends with David Stearns, whose deal with MIL expires after 2022 and who Cohen has been very eager to hire, he is from NY and grew up a Mets fan. One reason most candidates didn't even want to interview is that they expected Stearns to put his own guy in next year if he comes, so maybe this is kind of a pre-hire there, or Cohen's attempt at early wooing.

Imagine tweeting that and complaining about someone *else* being unprofessional.

Something that I knew, but was still shocking to see in this story:

Matz, 30, a second-round pick of the Mets in 2009, was one of many pitching prospects New York hoped to build title teams around, along with Noah Syndergaard, Jacob deGrom, Matt Harvey and Zack Wheeler.
Looking at that list, who can blame the Mets for thinking they were going to dominate baseball in the middle of that decade? Crazy how poorly it all worked out.

Always tough to lose coaches, but the Mariners are a good…oh, Seattle University, you say? Who even knew Seattle University existed?

Cohen shouldn't worry; they'll eventually sign the 12th pitcher they target

Which is why if I'm honest I'm actually happy for Wheeler and Matz - both of them I think it was clear reached a point that they needed a different mentorship / coaching strategy, because the skills were there but the results just never materialized. So while I wish the Mets had been capable of building that coaching staff, I'm happy they were able to find it elsewhere

Did they ever had a good offense in that run? They had that window from 2014-16 at least, but no O man.

By wRC+, in 2015 and 2016 they were right around 10th in the majors, which isn't bad, but 2012-14 they were usually around 20th. So not an offensive powerhouse by any means, but pretty much league average or just below over a 6 year span (pretty much between 94 and 101 every year). They also couldn't get them all healthy and performing at the same time, or performing well, so it seemed like out of five potential aces they usually just had one to three. That year they lost the series to the Royals though, they were close to putting it all together, had Noah Syndergaard, Jacob deGrom, Matt Harvey all throw 150+ innings, but Wheeler was injured and Matz only just getting his feet wet six years after being drafted.

People have to remember - Cohen comes from the world of leveraged finance which is a very staid, genial, word-is-bond backwater of industry. People who work in that business would never dream of burning long-time friends and business partners or even employees for their own interests. It must be such a culture shock for Cohen to not only have to transition to the price-taker role of franchise owner but also a much more competitive, cut-throat arena where people don't consider feelings a legitimate business term.

At what point do players not want to go play for the crazy negative outspoken fanboy owner, and at what point do agents not want to work with him? All of this seems really bad. Just go win a few championships before you go whine on twitter.

Money heals all wounds. The next call they have will be like they are best friends if Cohen wants the player represented by said agent and said agent will laugh it off to get a higher paycheck. It's not good business to make your client available to 29 of 30 teams.

I would bet my balls that within a week, if not already, this is smoothed (DAMNIT) over.

This isn’t a good sign for Eppler, is it? I’m sure the pursuit of Matz predated his hire but it’s been less than a week and the owner is already publicly meddling in what seems to be the GM’s area. Good luck, Billy.

Unless Cohen is one of those rich guys who is also a macho asshole who thinks that he doesn't win unless the other guy also loses.

It worked out as well for them as Generation K did. Do you remember Generation K? It's fine if you don't, there's not much to remember.

While I agree that Escobar is nothing to get excited about, I think I might rather have him on a two year $20M contract than what is likely to be a much, much larger (and longer) contract for Bryant.

Neither is good defensively, though at least Bryant is crappy at more positions.

Yeah, it seems a little high but I’d take him on the Sox. Criticizing the real b/c Bryant is still out there is like dinging the Sox for signing Wacha instead of Scherzer.

Shit! 2/$26.5 for Canha. Both canha and Escobar seem like guys the Sox should have been in on, but guess not?

So the Mets have added ~5-7 wins for $40m/year without giving up a pick or crippling the payroll long term. Nice job. This is what I’m hoping Bloom does.

Billy is busy spending money to let Cohen convince people he's a good owner again. Guessing the next domino is Stroman or another mid-rotation starter.

The Sox weren't in on them simply because they didn't end up signing them? Is that the most logical conclusion? Or is it possible that they did inquire on both players and were ultimately outbid? Or both players preferred the Mets' offer for their own reasons?

It's always strange to me when the reaction to a player signing somewhere other than Boston is an assumption of error, neglect, or incompetence on the part of the Red Sox. (of course, looking at the main board, there are those kind of assumptions when they do sign someone as well)

Sure, they may have been interested in either or both of these guys, if so, I hadn’t seen or heard it reported (yet), that’s all I meant. Granted, I’m not sure either the Canha or Escobar deals look like great value.
