The way this has all played out so incredibly publicly has to make it that much harder for them to get someone in the end. Who wants to be the one to think they know better than all these smart executives who won't even do an interview?

where I was last at
I haven't followed this modern Geek tragedy of Cohen's search for a GM, but are work conditions under Cohen and Alderson so onerous as to scare away so many name candidates? Is it assumed that Alderson will still call the baseball op shots while Cohen 2nd guesses the GM on Twitter?

Is Queens that bad?

Or has this become a game among baseball executives to see how long they can make the chain of rejections?

It's even worse than just those two, Alderson's son is an assistant GM.

Dan Duquette? Ned Colletti? Doug Melvin? Seems like at some point the Mets need to just make a hire and instead of reaching for the stars, find someone qualified who just wants a job and to get back into the game. At least get someone who will take an interview :)

Raquel played this perfectly - she gets the benefit of being considered a serious GM candidate worthy of an interview, but turning down the heap of burning trash that is the New York Mets has zero stigma attached in 2021 to raise questions that a female candidate might otherwise face. Hopefully she gets her shot in a better gig than Flushing.

I can GM for the Mets at this point. My FO can be SoSH. Probably a fun social experiment of running a billion dollar franchise off a random collection of baseball enthusiasts thoughts.

On behalf of SoSH, we appreciate the offer but the fit just isn’t right for us at this time.

Dan Duquette?
This is exactly who I was thinking, too. He showed with the Orioles that he’s still got a decent fastball, and he seems not to care what anyone thinks about him—a prerequisite, I’d imagine, for accepting a job that’s already been rejected by half the league.

On the bright side, there must be at least a couple hundred potential candidates who are still better qualified than Brodie Van Wagenen.

If you were making a pros and cons list for the Mets job, the reasons under the cons side would be a mile long. But Mike Puma’s “pinnacle of sports” quote does touch on the ultimate allure of the job. It’s the same as the Knicks or Notre Dame or Canadiens. If you’re the guy (or woman) who ends up being the one to turn the team around and win championships, you’re a God.

I’d argue that the Mets have none of the cachet of the Knicks, Notre Dame or Canadiens.

Yeah, the Mets are closer to the Nets or the Jets (rhyming intentional) than any of those other three teams.

I saw they offered Conforto the QO, that’s a shame for him. I thought he’d be a candidate for a pillow contract from some smart team, but I’m guessing now he’ll just stay.

Any cache that comes from being a GM in New York City is seriously offset by the presence of a Mark Cuban wannabe in the ownership suite.

Wait, is this news to anyone besides me?

[Cromie] left baseball four years ago to pursue a career in corporate law at Jones Day, one of the country’s largest firms. That name might ring a bell—the firm represented former president Donald Trump during both the 2016 and 2020 election campaigns, and the deputy chief of staff to former New Jersey governor Chris Christie in the Bridgegate case. It’s unlikely that Cromie, working in mergers and acquisitions, would’ve been involved in those cases, but the Christie link is at the very least an interesting coincidence. Christie serves on the Mets’ board of directors, and his son is the Mets’ international scouting coordinator. Cohen was also a major contributor to Christie’s ill-fated 2016 presidential bid, and he’s reportedly been consulting Christie on whom to hire to run the Mets.
I didn’t know any of the bold part and it’s… I don’t want to run afoul of the rules here, so I’ll simply point it out and allow readers to draw your own conclusions.

Jones Day has over 2500 lawyers and Cromie is an associate in the Pittsburg office. It’s highly unlikely that he would have any association with Christie.

Did we know that Christie was on the Mets’ board and helping with their search?
I didn't know he had any involvement with the Mets and it feels kind of weird at first that a politician would end up on a sports team board, but if you ever want to build, renovate, or expand anything, having an ex-pol in pocket always helps. It's not like they'd let him scout for players or front office peo...oh.

Yeah that is I believe the combo keeping everyone away, the blowhard, tweety, seemingly know nothing owner, the antiquated president of baseball operations and the built in spy for him at assistant GM. Plus if Cohen actually succeeds in hiring Stearns or someone else next year, of course the first thing that person will look to do is put their own person in at GM.

Keep in mind they have no manager and almost no coaches retained, with a likely contract freeze coming on Dec 1.
