Looks like it saves them a 40 man roster spot as neither of these guys needs to be protected (not totally sure about that yet).

  • J.J. Cooper: “Albert Abreu has 4 pitches, touches 99. Jorge Guzman is better when he gears down to 97-99, touches 102-103. Good pickups for Yanks.”
  • Eric Longenhagen: “New Yankees prospect Albert Abreu: 91-95, can touch 97-98. Very explosive arm action, change has significant projection, curve already plus.”
Buster Olney hears the Yankees are paying $5.5M of McCann’s salary in both 2017 and 2018. More to come!

Were you guys expecting more for him? I know one of these guys throws hard but he's still in rookie ball so who the hell knows.

Yeah, I'm just happy to have him off the team, very happy with every aspect of this deal. McCann's value is in playing catcher and Sanchez is the clear starter there now, plus this moves Higashioka, who had a great offensive and defensive season in AA and AAA last year, up in the pecking order to the fulltime AAA catcher who will get a chance if Sanchez gets hurt.

Sanchez/Romine in the bigs with Higashioka waiting in AAA, $11.5M off the books in both 2017 and 2018 and the threat of the 2019 $17M option vesting gone, plus two hard-throwing prospects, one of whom (Abreu) is already a serious prospect (probably in the 100-120 range overall in MLB) and who pitched the year in A ball at age 20, the other (Guzman) who is one of the hardest-throwing pitchers in all of the minor leagues, touching 103 as was said above, and who doesn't turn 21 until January.

There's a good chance they'll sign Beltran now if he will take a one year deal, in which case they have upgraded the DH position, helped their 2018 and maybe 2019 cap situation, plus added two more high-ceiling arms.

Ooh, just saw this that this happened. I wanted McCann off the team so this works for me.

Abreu was ranked the 7th best prospect in the Houston system by MLB and he now slots in at 10th for the Yankees between Kap and Tate.

I'm going the miss the .313 Yankee career OBP he was putting up for that way overpaid contract - nice job by Cash unloading him to someone else, even with the vig....

Still paying ARod $21 million next year, so we still have that at least to comfort us.

Leaves the team with about $140 in payroll before filling the roster.
Payroll for 2017 doesn't matter that much, I think their goals with salary are twofold: to get under whatever the new luxury tax number is for the 2018 season after the CC and A-Rod deals expire, and to have as much money available as possible in the 2018-2019 offseason for guys like Machado and Harper. Otani will also be a prime target whenever he is posted, maybe after 2017.

I'd guess at this point they are targeting Chapman (long-term) and Beltran (1 year/big money) and possibly trying to move Gardner still because Frazier should be ready before too long. That would leave them thin in the OF temporarily, but they're not going to be a title contender this season anyway.

Nice Fangraphs piece on the return the Yankees got: http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/scouting-the-yankees-return-for-brian-mccann/

I liked this part:

Now is a good time to mention that the Yankees have had recent success at developing arms within their system. Scouts have seen upticks in velocity from the likes of Chance Adams, James Kaprielian, (the departed) Rookie Davis, and others under the umbrella of New York’s player-development system. Internal pitching development is quickly becoming one of the organization’s core competencies. The raw material they’ve acquired in this deal, while carrying some risk due to proximity to the majors and command issues, adds considerable weight to what was already one of baseball’s best farm systems.

Also you have to factor in that NY cleared a 40 man roster spot with this move, so they can protect one extra guy tomorrow. Whoever that ends up being (not that we'll exactly know) is essentially part of this trade also.

Pretty sure the NYYF poster stole that from this thread to begin with also, an odd fact for two people to figure out independently. It's amazing how many posts and how little content there is on that site.

Gotta hand it to Cash: no one uses their ginormous payroll to raid other teams' farm systems like the Yankees.

This was my thought exactly. The Yankees just showed the way around the international bonus pool penalties. Take a market value contract, subsidize it, and buy somebody else's A - ball flamethrowers. Genius. Who can the Red Sox do this with? How about the give a rock Holt a 2 year,$10 million contract, then pay $9 million of the contract to, say, the Marlins for a couple top 17 year old prospects.
