Good to have that one off the board. Now it’s time to find some pieces to go with him and Pasta for the next decade. Maybe I’m projecting too much, but I think given where NHL revenue may be going, if McAvoy continues to be a perennial Norris candidate, that contract might seem cheap by the back half of it.

Holy shit. That's a big, long contract.

And I'm so fucking happy. The Bs arent the Bs without a cornerstone franchise defenseman.

Orr to Bourque to Chara to McAvoy.

Exhale! He is signed long-term. May seem cheap in 3-5 years, too.
LFG, let's make a dynasty.

Salary cap hasnt really moved in over 4 years. I dont think this ever looks cheap, but as long as he stays healthy, it's still a great use of resources.

Love it. Need to have a number 1 D and he could have gotten more on the open market. So what’s Pasta going to get?

Hes going to want to cash in again before hes 30. Hes 25, so unless the team is going to sign him to a 10 year contract - which I'm fine with - I think you see 3/4 years at 10.5 - 11.

I agree with the AAV will look good in a few years. It might even lol cheap by next summer. He’s going to put up big time numbers this year QB’ing the PP. I can see Charlie and Adam Fox battling it out for Norris trophies for the several years.

Whatever faults Sweeney has, locking up the core guys is not one of them.

Ok. But why?

The cap hasnt changed in four years. Why would the prices for these players go up if the cap isnt going to really move?
I mean I swear there was some global thing that screwed up the economy for the last 2 seasons…. What was it again?

edit: to actually add context, coming out of the lockout in 2013 the cap was 60 mil. Due to COVID the cap has been locked at 81.5 for a few years. So even without the TV deal if we see that kind of growth it will look good on the back end if he continues to be elite

Yes, Orr to Bourque to Chara to McAvoy. Looking forward to him quarterbacking the PP. Great news.

Fanatics has a hockey sale today. McAvoy autographed 8X10 is $71. Scooped one up for a Christmas present for my son. I feel pretty good it won't be out of place with the Orr, Bourque, & Chara ones he already has on his wall.

Didn't Chucky hate the B's growing up on Long Island? I realize that most hockey players, as professionals making millions of dollars, learn to get over such sentiments pretty quickly. But you have to imagine that the culture in the B's room, cultivated by Chara and having the perfect heir in Bergeron, led to this signing. There are still some big faults in this organization, but this doesn't seem like one of them. Outside of some extenuating circumstances like Krejci's, guys want to stay and play here.

Look forward to seeing McAvoy in black and gold for the rest of his playing days. I just hope that they build a competitive team around him and Pastrnak in the wake of Bergeron/Marchand.

Lock in Pastrnak next and building around Pastrnak Mcavoy and hopefully Swayman for the next 10 years as they transition away from most of the current top guys doesn't seem so bad

Worth every penny.

@Kenny F'ing Powers the way this looks like a deal is after the mandated cap freeze negotiated during COVID, the league will add $500+m in expansion fee revenue and a huge new tv deal to the cap calculation. I suspect in the middle of this deal it looks like hedmans does now.

Can you think of anything over the past two years that might have affected league revenues and the cap?

The new TV deal will lead to an increase in the cap, and the price of elite talent always goes up. It’s the mid level contract guys that get phased out in favor of kids on ELCs when the cap doesn’t increase.
Right, this makes sense. Wasnt aware of the new TV deal. Thanks, man.

Man... if he keeps adding even more offense to his already great game... he is going to be criminally underpaid...

He's not really adding offense or doing things he hasn't done before. He's always been elite offensively. The difference is this year they gave him the keys to PP1. Prior to this year, he'd get scraps on the PP with the 2nd unit. He has 6 power play points this year, he had 8 all of last year. He's averaging an extra minute per game in PP TOI than he has in past years.

As usual - you've beaten me the punch with a better version of the point I wanted to make. McAvoy has been one of the best D at generating offense 5v5 in the league for at least 2 years.

This. He’s always been capable offensively. Now he’ll add PP points and up his already strong Norris Trophy resume.
