Mayo said he needed a break from Bill, so that's why he took a few years off lol

Here
Was that a shot at Bill? The echo chamber and "the game has changed since I was drafted" stuff.

I wouldn't blame him, the shit BB's camp leaked to Wickersham was ugly.

Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but kinda weird he said Bill specifically instead of "I needed a break from football."
I thought it was a harmless joke...until I heard the echo chamber stuff.

I don't think these are shots. I think they are someone poking fun and differentiating himself.

He said he's a fan of titles, in regards to a question about naming coordinators.

Whoa...I read that way too quickly and thought you wrote "titties."

I do think it was a bit of a joke, but like most jokes, there's some truth to it.

Clearly he has a TON of respect for Belichick, but it's also clear he's approaching the job differently - both with the press (as he just said) and with his staff and with the approach to the game.

I wonder if Ben Volin has a functioning sarcasm meter.

First impression is definitely an overwhelming positive. He's 37 going on 60.

I don't know how he will handle the pressure of making a big time decision in a game, but everything this guy is talking about in terms of leading people and an organization is absolutely 100% spot on.

Sees one of his first jobs is to rebuild relationships.
With who? Players that Bill alienated but who he wants to keep? Other coaches / staff that he values

I thought of almost everyone on the offensive side of the ball--many if not all of whom have likely suffered hits to their confidence and ended the season in a difficult space.

I love what Mayo said about seeing color and disability. He comes off like a strong confident leader--those are typically the most open to sound counsel and differing PoVs.

I was thinking scouting / front office. Guys who put in a lot of work on the draft/free agents and made recommendations that were quickly dismissed by Bill.

I thought Kraft was losing it - but give him time to answer and he is pretty with it - just a little slower.

My only concern so far is the lack of specificity on the offensive plan - but it’s understandable.

I think it could be easily seen (and I'm sure Jones on WEEI is going to do it later today) as Mayo and Kraft taking shots at Belichick, talking about how things have changed, how things need to be done different, etc. And it could be seen as, "Belichick just can't do the job anymore; he's a dinosaur." But I don't think that's quite it. I definitely don't think it's them taking any shots at BB. Kraft multiple times already has referred to BB as the greatest HC of all time, even in a press conference introducing his new coach. But they recognize that things ARE different. And they need new leadership to move this organization forward.

Kraft just said that they won't be involved in the personnel aspect. So apparently Jonathan won't be the defacto GM.

Like what I’m hearing so far. I think he sees the offense needs a total overhaul and everything is under evaluation.

What Kraft said about ownership staying out of football decisions made a lot of sense (and gave me a sigh of relief)--it erodes responsibility and makes accountability almost impossible.

That was...awesome. I mean, I love Belichick. Love him. Truly the GOAT and I hope he smashes Shula's record and gets another SB. Nothing but love for him and always will.

But man....Mayo seems tremendous, and Kraft seems like he still really has a great sense of how to run an organization.

Color me totally totally amped for the future of the Pats. LFG!!!!

That was great. Mayo as a leader for the new generation definitely felt like a real thing. Funny, confident, and thoughtful. But, man, every time Kraft spoke - about the women in his life, color blindness, etc., I had that nervous feeling he was going to say something that ignites a social media firestorm. Mayo gently circling back to clean up some of his answers in a respectful way was another positive indicator of his skills.

I think Mayo is exactly what this team needs right now. He’s been part of the Patriot culture, but brings a new perspective on things. The key reference he made is how gardeners cultivate, not grow the plant themselves. He’s going to be big on bringing in guys with character and willingness to learn.

That was a grand slam press conference. I especially liked Mayo's answer about diversity, not just race but disability as well. As someone with a permanent physical disability since birth, it was nice to hear.

One thing is for sure: postgame press conferences or appearances on WEEI are going to be really different with Mayo than with Bill.

He said they never have, unless they had issues with a person’s character. He made a great point in that if you don’t let the people you hire make the decisions, you can’t hold them 100% accountable.

Mayo does seem to have a good mix of “no-nonsense” but also “relatability” to him.

He seems like both the kind of guy you’d want to play hard for just because he’s a good dude but also a guy you’d want to play hard for because if you don’t you’re getting stapled to the bench. I get the allure from Kraft.

I also get the sense Mayo is going to scrap the whole current offensive system.

I thought it was interesting to hear both men referencing evaluating people responsible for personnel decisions. Just my two cents but I'd think both Kraft and Mayo would already have a good feel for their performance unless Bill was doing more overruling than we realized.

Sounded to me like there is a lot of unknowns because of how centralized everything was in Foxboro under Bill and they are doing a deep dive on existing personal/departments to figure out what was really going on - good and the bad.

I think that’s spot on. I’ve had bosses like Jerod that were just really cool, down-to earth guys but also didn’t waver in making a tough decision. I think Mayo will be the best of both worlds.

I can totally see why Kraft loves this guy.
