Apparently Gallant first found out through the media. Even if he isn't the right guy for this team, and I'm not sure he is, that is a total trash move by the organization and very disappointing.

If true, of course.

Let's put it this way: Drury seems like a real prick. I don't care for him at all and was irate at the Game of Thrones bullshit that went down with Davidson and Gorton getting canned after rebuilding much of the team. But I'm not sure that he's in over his head. He could be, but I'm not sure.

Overall, I think the Rangers have been less than the sum of their parts this season, and Drury has provided enough parts. I put more blame on coaching than him. Gallant just seems to have a stubborn "I'm in charge" way of doing things and as I dig around for info about all this, I can't say that I have much confidence in him moving forward.

I've read that Gallant is disdainful of analytics. I'm not sure how much he values input from the rest of the staff. Don't know what ground truth is, but I think coaching is a team within the team effort. I'm OK with the Rangers going in another direction.

I'd be happy if Drury followed him out the door, but I don't think there is necessarily a lack of competence there. Just decency, professionalism and class.

But I'll caveat all of the above with the fact that I'm not a hardcore fan that follows the team closely on a day-to-day basis. I'm not a member of the Sons of Mike Gartner. So those are just impressions I have and not much of an informed opinion.

5 year old kid in Vancouver when the Bs won the Cup in 2011 -- would really suck if he went to Montreal, Philly, or Washington as "revenge".

Between here and everywhere.
I’m going to catch a lot of heat for saying this - but talents like Bedard should go to actual hockey markets.

Philly, Chicago, or (ugh) Montreal would be ok with me. I don’t want this kid toiling away in Arizona or Anaheim where no one will watch him play.

Anaheim would (and has) support its team if it was good. That's who I'm rooting for.

I knew it was going to be Chicago, just knew it. Still better than Montreal (or Philly or Wash).

Well there you go. I’m looking forward to seeing the kid play.

I'll be that guy - this was rigged. LoL
Of course it was. Big market team loses it two main gate attractions? Of course they we’re getting Bedard. It’s bad for the league as a business if he goes to Anaheim or god forbid Columbus.

It’s bad enough the best player in the league by a mile is in a Canadian city in the west. I really dislike him going to the Hawks - intensely, but it’s good for the league. Grrr.

Yeah, I'm generally not a conspiracy theorist, but what a perfect Kane replacement.

McDavid to Edmonton is the counterpoint to any accusation of the draft being rigged.

The problem has always been how the league markets it’s superstars, not where they play.
I’d argue it’s both. Not to cross sports, but if Aaron Judge played in Milwaukee instead of New York, he wouldn’t be as big a star. Being in a big, East Coast city with the kind of media domination does help drive some of this.

Do agree the marketing the NHL does is woefully inadequate and it’s baffling to me.

if the NHL was going to fix the lottery it would be for Anaheim or Arizona. Anaheim would be to get a marquee player to the LA market. Arizona would be to further their fools errand of making hockey relevant in the desert. if You think they would do something to help a traditional market, ask yourself when has the Bettman led NHL ever done anything that makes sense to actual hockey fans?

I really didn’t want him to go to fucking Chicago. Same organization that completely failed Kyle Beach gets rewarded. Gross

It would also help the Coyotes:

A. Shed their identity as a cap dumping ground

B. Become less of a financial burden for revenue sharing

C. Gain a hell of a bargaining chip for their new arena

Arizona is such a bad situation. What fans they do have are developing a complex with the Sword of Damocles taking up residence over Mullett Arena and Gila River Arena before that. In the near 30 years since they came from Winnipeg, they’ve had maybe one decent owner, and he’s been gone forever. Just about everyone since Ellman, including the NHL, has operated the team with a hand out to the local governments. They had a shitty arena arrangement downtown, they had a modern arena in the West Valley that they never really wanted, and now it’s last chance saloon in Tempe, with the special election a week from Tuesday. A hint of how little the Coyotes matter in Phoenix right now is this article from the local 12 News, which misspells Meruelo’s name repeatedly.

FTR, I think the NHL could work there. But the team needs an owner willing to build goodwill over time, taking losses for a few years. I don’t think that’s Meruelo. His cap management says he’s not serious about making the team matter, they play in an arena my town can match, and his assurances that he has private funding for the district feels hollow.

Shame Chicago won. Probabnly the worst outcome. A lot of the principal's in the Beach case are gone, except for Rocky Wirtz who will now profit from this.
