Reds won Game 1 of the DH against the Pirates. With the game tied, they scored 7 runs in the bottom of the 8th after the Pirates starting catcher got hurt in the top of the 8th and their backup catcher had been ejected earlier. Sounds like their emergency catcher was a train wreck.
I cued this inning up on MLB TV and….the EBUC looked totally fine. Maybe it was in the pitchers’ heads, because they were awful, but other than some bad framing the big inning didn’t have anything to do with catcher mistakes.

Yeah, the AP story was really reaching to make it sound like it was the emergency catcher's fault:

With the count 0-2, VanMeter stabbed at three straight sliders near the zone but didn't get any of the calls - perhaps his obvious lack of pitch framing experience cost the Pirates.
I'm pretty sure it's still the pitcher's job to throw strikes and the umpire's job to correctly call balls and strikes. Don't blame it on a catcher not being able to fool the umpire into doing his job badly.

Cincinnati's attempt at a bullpen game is not off to a good start in the second game. Two relievers allowed 3 home runs in the 1st inning and Pittsburgh leads 4-2. It will be just like the Reds to finally snap a losing streak and not even get to enjoy it for a few hours.

George Kirby is awesome.

He looked amazing, but Yarbrough matched him. Margot, who is having an amazing season, put the Rays up 1-0 with a homer in the 8th but then Kittredge gave up a bomb in the bottom of the 9th and Mariners won in the 10th, 2-1. Stops the Rays west coast winning streak at 6.

That's the first interesting thing Rick Manning has said in 30+ years. He was off a couple weeks ago because of COVID protocol and the Guardians broadcasts were 100x better.

White Sox blow a 6 run lead in the 9th. Error mixed in there but Hendriks went single, grand slam with one out to get. Red Sox could have done more against this guy.

I changed the channel in the bottom of the 8th. Tim Anderson is currently on pace to commit 50 errors this year.

Liam Hendriks was pitching his 6th game in 8 days for the White Sox tonight when he gave up the game-tying granny.

In this age of protecting pitchers at nearly all costs, how many managers other than Tony LaRussa would let him do that? I was actually kinda shocked he didn't successfully argue his way into Sunday's game after pitching in the previous five.

MFYs turning the clock back to 1998. 16-4 last 20 games and every late and close game is going their way.

Not sure how anyone is going to stop them.

Oddly, the report only mentions the coaching staff and support personnel testing positive. They had a four players who missed a couple of games over the past two weeks. Based on games missed, I assume only Yu Chang may have shown symptoms, but it seems far more likely they used his an excuse to get a lousy player who's out of options off the active roster for a couple of weeks.

Christian Yelich hits for the cycle in 14-11 loss to the Reds. He has three cycles in his career, all against Cincy.

Im not clever enough to think of a good adopt a team thread title but the Angels are looking like a pretty solid team. Rendon finally seems to be healthy, Trout, Ohtani, Marsh, and Ward are a killer OF, and their starting pitching is finally looking like it could be a strength. Ohtani/Syndegaard/Sandoval/Detmers/Lorenzen is a pretty solid top 5. Sandoval doesn't seem like he was ever a top prospect but has really emerged as a solid rotation piece the last two years. A high BB/9 but good results so far and he really only needs to be a 3/4 starter. Maybe they get rid of Adell for some pitching at the deadline? He doesn't really seem to have a place on their roster anymore and they don't have a ton of prospect depth. Adell for Eovaldi?

He's only 23 and still put up a solid .837 OPS against RHP. I think he's still got a lot of rope. Ohtani is only under contract for 2 more years too.

Rays beat Jays 5-2. After a 7-3 west coast trip (despite getting no-hit and generally mashed in LAAAA) and tonight’s win Rays are now 3 games clear of Toronto for 2nd in the East.

Royce Lewis just hit his first career home run – a grand slam – off Bryan M.F. Shaw as part of a 9-run inning for the Twins.

I was so pissed that Cleveland failed to recognize that any success Shaw had last year was pure luck on top of smoke and mirrors, and then resigned him during spring training this year. He just managed to give up a 3-run homer and a grand slam in the span of 5 batters.

Over the weekend, Tampa takes 2 of 3 from Toronto in our national sport to complement crushing their spirit in their national sport.
