I guess I'd be almost as interested in the actual total of 96 strikes as I would a percentage. I'm sure there are tons of games pre-"pitch count" era where guys threw more strikes, but I'd be shocked if anyone had done so in the last 20-30 years or so. 96 seems like a crazy high number, in a time period where 100 pitch games are getting rarer and rarer.
From 1987-2016, there are 28 games with 100 or more strikes led by Randy Johnson's 9/27/92 effort for Sea vs. Tex, 111 strikes in 160 pitches, went 8 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 18 K. They lost 3-2

The last one of those games is in 2002 by Johnson.

Thanks for that. I'd love to see that list if you can post it. That would be cool to look at. I forgot guys like the Big Unit were throwing 150+ pitches as recently as '92. Seems like it's months between guys throwing 125 pitches in today's game. I wonder how many different pitchers make up the 28 games.

Awesome, thank you. Not surprised by the first 3, and guys like Maddux, Smoltz, Hernandez were work horses too. But man, some of those names bring back memories of guys I haven't thought about since I was collecting cards in the 80's. Drabek, Bobby Witt, Brian Fisher, Eric Show...I love that shit.

I was at Nats Park tonight. Very cool to watch. I hate to sound cheesy but after the first inning I thought, wow he is ON tonight. Never expected to see 20 Ks however.

More amazing than 20 ks? The Padres took 2 from the Cubs today. Half kidding.
Lackey was the loser in the nightcap. Got beat 1-0 on a crushed HR from Christian Bethancourt, that broke up a prefect game in the 5th inning.
Lackey barked at Bethancourt who was walking down the line admiring his blast.
The next batter also reached by beating out a groundball to 1st while Lackey stood on the mound.

Moving the Line
Syndergaard becomes only the second Met to hit two homers. The other? Walt Terrell, who was born today (5/11). Hit exit velocity on these homers was 104, 102, respectively (and a foul ball just now at 108)--both of these are considerably faster than his average four seamer velocity entering the game by Fangraphs, which puts him at 97.8. Should he hit another, he'll join James Tobin (1942, Boston Braves) and Guy Hecker (1886, Louisville Colonels).

Contrary to popular belief, Max Scherzer did not tie the major league record for strikeouts in a single game. That goes, if rather dubiously so, to Tom Cheney who had 21 for the Senators, 9/12/1962 in a 2-1 win over the Orioles, but with the caveat he went 16 innings.

What a night to be a fan of this amazing sport! :)

I imagine throwing 8 innings of 2 run ball, and hitting 2 HR, driving in all 4 runs in a 4-3 win would give you quite a high game WPA score

Speaking of Lackey and Scherzer, with the latter's win over the Tigers last night he joined the former as the only active pitchers to defeat all 30 teams.

Andriese with a 2 hit complete game shutout for the Rays. Gave up 1 run in 7 innings in his first start last week. Rays might have another nice young pitcher on their hands.

Matt Bush made his debut last night. That's pretty remarkable.
Against Donaldson/Bautista/Encarnacion no less, strikeout and two infield pops. You can't really have a more impressive debut appearance than that.

Long brawl in the Texas-Toronto game. Odor absolutely clocked Bautista with a right hook after he slid in hard, and the benches emptied in a hurry.

Edit: Wow and after the dust finally clears, Toronto pitcher immediately hits Prince Fielder with the first pitch and they empty again.

The little town of Bethlehem.
Huge departure from the half-hearted jogs from the bullpen and basic gathering on the field- guys were sprinting at Odor. I do wish Bats turned around and rubbed Beltre's head though...

Obviously the whole thing was precipitated by the aggressive, borderline dirty slide, but isn't it likely there was a bit of "fuck you" in that from the bat flip last October?

"Borderline?" His slide started at the base - that was about as bad as it gets next to cleating someone.

That said, I'm sure there are some hard feelings.

Early in the game the Jays 1st base coach gets tossed and then Gibby gets tossed.
Matt Bush hits Bautista, too.
Ejections after the brawl: Bautista, Donaldson, Odor, Rangers bench coach Steve Buechele, and later Chavez and Hale

That's the understatement of the year. Bush (stupidly) hits Bautista as payback for the Batflip of the Century. Bautista does a ally dirty slide as payback for the HBP. Odor clocks Bautista as payback for the slide. Fielder gets hit as payback for .. Hmm .. starting to get confused.

The whole thing was pretty idiotic. Personally I have no problems with bat flips .. But it's pretty clear the Rangers did - and it all stemmed from that.

1. I'd love to hear Marciano's evaluation of Odor's form. That was nice.

2. Clearly no one wanted to fight Beltre. I am trying to think of who would be higher than Beltre on the list of major league players you absolutely do not want to fight.

Scout on Odor:

“‪@JeffPassan‬: One scout when Rougned Odor debuted: ”The thing I love about him the most is you do not want to [expletive] with him.“ That’s a good scout.”

I would think Odor's looking at 10 games. Coco got 7-games for the Shields brawl, and he didn't stagger a star player with a right cross like that. Whew.

Bautista should get 4-5 because that was a brutal attempt at a vulnerable player, and MLB has been making such a big deal of the new slide rules.

1. That was pretty. Short, accurate, good leverage. Follow through wasn't great, but Bats was already sleepy.

2. Stanton maybe?

10 games seems light for Odor. That punch landed spot on. As bad as the slide was, and deserves 4-5 games easily IMO, I'm thinking Odor gets 12-15. There really is no place for punches like that in a game. Bautista's slide was the very definition of wrong and dangerous. Still doesn't excuse the bullshit response by Odor.

I didn't see the HBP, so do not know how intentional it was. But why does Bush care about a bat flip from last year? Wouldn't another pitcher that was on the team have hit Bautista earlier in the series for payback?

Edit: as for Odor, don't most mlb players throw haymakers that just don't land?

Bautista just let Beltre hold him back and nobody from the Blue Jays went over to Beltre. ultimate example of how you dont mess with Adrian

Most direct flat out punch 've seen in 50 years of watching baseball.I actually gasped.
As far as ballplayers past that I would think would be animals to fight, were Joey Albert Belle, and Carl Everett.

That slide was legal at the time, no?

Edit: And Odor's punch had zero to do with last year, it was directly because that illegal, dirty slide.
Yea because every dude that comes in hot at 2B gets clocked with a right hook. You're nuts if you dont think the Bat Flip had anything to do with it.

I doubt he thought for a milisecond about the bat flip at that moment in time. Does every guy who has someone bat flip them punch the guy?

Last game of the season between the two teams, unless they meet again in October. Kinda cowardly of the Rangers, if they're going to retaliate at all for the "slight" of the Bat Flip, to play nearly six full games before getting their "vengeance" (both the HBP and the punch).

That said, I don't doubt the Bat Flip was in their heads, whether that was the reason Odor threw the punch or not.

Not that anybody can really understand the unwritten rules of violence in baseball....

But, after reading up on the full exchange, and Deadspin is doing a good job of fulfilling their purpose in sport journalism on this one, there is a bunch of chickenshit going on here. First, Bush hit Joey Bats on the last at bat of the season that he would likely have against the Rangers. Josh Donaldson mentioned in interviews after the game that the Jays thought this was garbage, and I can understand that perspective.

Second, if Bautista was really offended about being hit, to the point of wanting to fight about it, 5'10" 180lb Matt Bush was standing 60' in front of him at the time. Bautista retaliating with a dirty slide at second base rather than going after Bush was also garbage. I can see why Odor was offended, Bautista clearly didn't know his target well.

Finally, Josh Donaldson's performance here is almost as awesome as Beltre's. His charging run into the pile at about the 19 second mark is a sight to behold. Not getting him when he was available is Cherrington's greatest sin, in my opinion.

Edit: another view
