It’s not the same ACL as 2021, which at least means he’ll hopefully be able to return as strong as before. Injuries like this to the games best players just suck

Blake Snell got roughed up again. Wonder if this will be the last time teams will be willing to sign a pitcher late.

It's bizarre what's going on with Snell, I think the lack of a normal ST rampup hurts but definitely some extreme bad luck as well. And I've never been much of a believer in splits, but for years he's been a slow starter:

2021: 1st half ERA of 4.99, 2nd half ERA of 3.24.

2022: 1st half ERA of 5.22, 2nd half ERA of 2.19.

2023: Through May 19th (6 ER vs the Sox) ERA of 5.40. Rest of season: 1.20 ERA with 186 Ks in 135 IP, won the Cy Young.

This year despite the 10 ERA (!) he has a 3.98 xFIP, with the .414 BABIP and 46% LOB rate not doing him any favors.

Adding FIP & xFIP to your numbers:

2021: 1st half 4.34/3.87, 2nd half 3.20/3.59

2022: 1st half 3.69/3.96, 2nd half 2.23/2.73

2023: 1st half 3.58/3.39, 2nd half 3.27/3.90

2024: 4.55/3.98

So, in each 1st half, his ERA was worse than both his FIP and xFIP. He also improved all three of those metrics (ERA/FIP/xFIP) in the 2nd half each of the three years.

Snell has a very unusual career arc in that he's seemingly bounced between mediocre and CYA winner from year to year. A lot of it just comes down to walk rate, but in the history of guys to win two CYA, he has to have had the most scattershot career.

Mets up one in the ninth and it's Ottavino trying to close it, not Diaz. Still blew the save on a bad safety squeeze that he couldn't field.

Bases loaded, one out, 3-0 count, but they can't score. On to extras. More schadenfreude opportunities.

Pirates throwing Jared Jones and Skenes in a doubleheader this afternoon against Detroit, but the Tigers (in some horrendous uniforms) are already up 3-0 in the second inning of the first game.

Plus Edwin Diaz onto the IL and Pete Alonso having to leave the game after a HBP in the 1st inning today.

Today's game isn't over (9-3 LAD after they scored 6 in the 8th), but the Mets have played consecutive series against SF and LAD. They are about to go 1-5 with this breakdown:

1st 7 innings of the 6 games combined: 14-12 Mets
After the 7th: 23-4 SF and LAD

Edit: The Dodgers got 1 more in the 9th, so the Mets got outscored 24-4 in a six game stretch after the 7th inning, and that includes them scoring 3 in the 9th for their only win in that stretch, 24-1 in the other 5. That is not easy to do, and none of it was garbage time, all of those games were up for grabs until late.

I don't understand what he was even ejected for. Arguing a check swing call?

Maybe he knew he was getting DFA'd after this game and was just done with the Mets.

The AL West has been so brutal that the Astros are closing back in on 1st again, just 3 1/2 out.
SEA put a big dent in HOU's resurgence with three straight close wins the last three days, 3-2, 4-2 and 2-1. They have one more tomorrow, but HOU really could have used a split at least.

I have never heard Lopez speak before (or seen him in a game, for that matter) but sounded to me like he said he was worst teammate, not that he was on worst team

Yes, this is what he actually said. The whole thing was a mess, typically for the Mets.

Thanks. Just did a quick lookup on him and apparently he had to take mental health break with previous team and has a chronically ill child in hospital. Sucks that he was misheard but getting away from the asylum in Queens might be a blessing in disguise. Hope he has strong support system away from game.

Agreed, this goes beyond typical "lolMets" silliness into egregious behavior. People who understand how MLB clubhouse comms rules work can correct me, but as a comms professional, given Lopez's mental health concerns, hospitalized child, and clear struggles articulating in English, I can't believe a) that the Mets PR team allowed him to be available to the media in that situation, and b) didn't at least have a translator present as a lifeline.

And of course, the insta-DFA after his comments indicates that the team may have believed he said "worst team" (as was tweeted by SNY, right?) as opposed to what he clearly (after rewatching) actually said in "worst teammate."

Just a clown show all the way around... much like the Mets.

KC spent money to improve their rotation and then handed the closer's role to a recently DFA'd nobody who wasn't even a good minor league pitcher.
