That’s not the standard for a restart if a team is preparing a set piece. You can either go for a quick restart or a set piece. If it’s a set piece, the referee makes the team taking the kick wait for his whistle to restart, which is exactly what happened. Atkinson blew for a restart without looking to see whether Liverpool was ready.

You can say it’s within his rights to do so, but it’s highly unusual. I guarantee you would be flipping the fuck out if that sort of decision cost Spurs points. And considering Atkinson’s background in Liverpool matches, it’s a pretty remarkable coincidence that this exception was made late in a match when Brighton needed a goal.
How did you feel about the quick restart by Southampton against Arsenal? Player still down, ball moved away from defender, but not to spot of foul..and still rolling?

It's unusual for no-one to be within 10 yards more so than for the ref to blow the whistle when players are not set, but outside 10 yards.

A great example of a similar restart can be seen in another Liverpool match.... the much lauded quick corner against Barca.

You are comparing a corner kick to a restart after a red card. The two are completely different.

On the corner, I highly doubt there was a whistle when the ball crossed the end line never mind to restart. There's hardly ever is a whistle in either of those situations.

This is an odd lineup starting for arsenal.. mustafi sticks out by itself.. but at least both forwards are starting

What the hell was that Norwich player doing with his hand up there? What an idiot.

Krul saves the penalty from Aubameyang, but they've VAR'd it and it's a retake for encroachment. Bloody hell.

He scores the retake, but full marks to Krul for his gamesmanship, took a yellow but I like his style.

A good finish by Aubameyang to even it up. I think there's more goals in this match. Arsenal with around 2/3 of the possession but Norwich are dangerous on the break.

Freddie has to sub Chambers. He's just got a yellow, he's having a mare of a game, and he's one semi bad foul from a red.

What's with both of Arsenal's subs walking off slowly in a 2-2 game against a relegation candidate?

Really good game there (for the neutral). You can see that Arsenal have much more quality, but Norwich were well organised and everyone knows their job and they give everything. A bit more quality and Norwich could have nicked it.

Fun game to watch (as a neutral) .. still .. from the Arsenal point of view, the first game with a new manager, at home, against a relegation threatened team and the best you can do is a draw with your keeper as MoTM .. can they buy a new back four and half a midfield in January?

They have the midfield they need in-house IMO - for whatever reason, Ljungberg didn't play Torreira at his ideal CDM role today, opting to go with Xhaka. Lack of shield there exposed the back 4 as usual, with Mustafi giving even more room to attackers than normal.

If they go 4-2-3-1 with Torreira / Guendouzi as the CDMs (Guendouzi in a more b2b role), Aubameyang / Ceballos / Ozil as the advanced midfielders, and Lacazette at striker I think they'd be fine. Still requiring a CB upgrade but at least winning these types of matches

What a lovely curling goal by Grealish from wide. He made that look so easy, but it was an incredible finish. Score worldy at Old Trafford - Achievement unlocked - add 2 Million to transfer value.

Everton at 22', Richarlison header off a nice cross by Sidibe.

Toffees in 3-4-3 that plays more like 5-2-3, causing some trouble for the Foxes.

Leicester penalty waved off by VAR, correct call and first good VAR for Everton on the season.

Gut punch game for Everton. Played well and frustrated Leicester until Inheacho came on and gave Vardy someone to play off of. Goat is Davies who has been very good over the last month but gave up possession for both goals, the second really inexcusable. Silva has the team playing hard and set up well, but his sub off of Iwobi instead of Davies late has the fans livid.

it might be harsh if this is the result that dooms Silva, given the quality of the opposition, the fight and good play of the Toffees, and the thinness of the bench with so many out. But there may not be a choice.

Leicester feeling that magic again. But really it’s such a well built squad. Having a talent like Iheanacho to come off the bench on a reasonable salary is so smart.

Ideal weekend for West Ham, 3 points at Chelsea, and decent chance Houghton and Moyes have new jobs, making Pellegrini either the manager the rest of the way, or forcing better options to replace him (Benitez, Marcelino, etc.)

Nice attempt to be cute, but there’s no whistled restart for a corner, just like there’s no whistled restart for a goal kick or throw-in.

I didn’t see it, so I don’t feel qualified to comment.

Former PGMOL head Keith Hackett points out yet another error by Martin Atkinson: Brighton was interfering with the wall.
