In the majors, the lefty swinger owns a .194 average with zero homers, 17 RBIs and .560 OPS in 152 plate appearances. He’s having a down year after also struggling in 2021...
He'll fit right in.

He’s been terrible for the last two years, so it certainly fits the MO of guys the Sox have acquired of late; if it’s straight up for Dalbec or Cordero, could make sense as a change of a very deal. But he largely looks like more of the same.

Sure, why not? Let's see how efficient he is, maybe he can catch or play third.

At it's base, Bloom's job isn't hard; get good players and then you'll have a good team. Trying to prove how clever you are by dumpster diving on every transaction is becoming exhausting.

I know that Bloom wants to hold on to prospects but I can't imagine the difference between Bell and Smith would be enough to make a difference, while the difference in quality of player coming back would be. I mean....really.... the Mets would be thrilled to just change Smith for Dalbec right now. Unless this is the beginning of some sort of weird "punting" in which the Mets assume all of Smith's salary and send Rocker along with him.... .hmmmmmm...... naw.

We're creating this monster out of this sentence?:

As the New York Mets explore offensive upgrades, they have engaged with the Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs and others about first baseman Dom Smith, according to major-league sources.
When I see a definition of "engaged with" that doesn't include "called them to take this stiff off of our hands but received no reply," I'll worry.

So, this is a report from MassLive that is going with, based off a report from FanSided, which is quoting anonymous major league sources.

Blaming Bloom for the Mets calling up the Red Sox about a 1B to occupy the ass end of the roster is kind of funny.

Mets would be an ideal team for a larger deal with the Red Sox. They need an offensive upgrade. We need to start doing the groundwork to trade players who will be FAs at the end of the season.

No idea if this is real but aren't we all ok with this approach this season? This team doesn't seem to have much hope so these "change of scenery' and hope type deals seem better than giving away prospects for a Josh Bell type. Plus he only strikes out 25% of the time instead of Dalbec's 31% or Cordero's 32%.

Every organization makes moves like this. The Yankees got Nestor Cortes for "future considerations", Clay Holmes for a couple of lottery tickets, and Matt Carpenter for nothing.

Let the grown ups do their job.

The person named "Moondog80", who spends bare minimum 10 hours a day posting wishcasting bullshit on a Red Sox message board, is telling me to "let the grown ups do their job".

Sure. Will do, champ.

In this case Moondog80 is correct. Even if Bloom were to acquire Dom it does not preclude him from other moves. We also don't have clarity if Bloom is selling or buying and that can also affect this discussion. At the end of the day though teams need to make these kinds of moves to be successful. They largely don't work out but when they do you get your PIvettas or Whitlocks just to name two examples.

Of course not, I didn't say that it did. But we already have two crappy first basemen, we don't need another. That's the point.

The Yankees had no real need for the crappy versions of Carpenter/Cortes/Holmes, yet they acquired them anyway, because good organizations are *always* looking under every rock to see what misfit they might be able to tweak into a useful piece. I'm not going to get excited about Dom Smith, but with his pedigree it is 100% a chance worth taking, assuming the cost is minimal.

Dom won't be Bloom trying to prove how clever he is by dumpster diving on every move, which is what I believe you said. You are right. We have two first baseman. One of whom is only able to hit lefties and the other can't seem to hit much of anything. So why not get a third one and see if the team can get something out of him? The Sox can still acquire Josh Bell or whomever and if they fix Dom's offensive woes it is a good problem to have.

Just reading what Smith brings to the table, I'm wondering what the greater cost is, what it will take to acquire him or the roster spot he'll take up?

The last thing they need is a 1B who can't hit.

This reads like the Mets trying to gin up interest before DFA'ing Smith this summer or non-tendering him this winter, and I'd bet that includes calling up teams with holes at first base and trying to snatch a prospect before they do it. No reason to assume this is gonna go anywhere, he makes no sense for this roster.

Irrespective of whether one believes in Bloom's philosophy, I motion that we get rid of this cliché. There have not been that many GM's in real life that are making moves independent of ownership, market forces, etc. And even less that make moves to "prove how clever they are." They're not making or not making deals to show up SoSH posters, I guarantee it.

I think he's worth taking a flier on if they can get him for a bag of balls - he had good numbers in 2019 and 2020 (OPS+ 132 and 168), albeit in somewhat SSS. But I do hope Bloom either definitively sells, or definitively buys, when the time comes, and doesn't just tinker around the edges.

Meanwhile: Carpenter is not a good comp. He has a long track record of being an excellent major league player. He's more akin to signing Wacha ...

Man. Life was so much better before Bloom.

Once we had a GM that traded for Kyle Schwarber, the then hottest hitter in the majors, plus got a then-effective Hansel Robles and Austin Davis to bolster the pen.

Of course that fucker gutted the farm.

But Casas is about to return, so they might need the depth.
Slow clap.

Aldo was the 7th rated prospect in a weaker system so something like Groome, Murphy, Winckowski should be comparable. Though Aldo didn't need to be placed on a 40 man. He was supposed to start pitching in June but he's been shut down for all of 2022. Unclear if he needs surgery either even though he hasn't pitched in a game in over a year.

Bloom: We obviously need some options at 1B. What we have are complete pieces of shit, what will you give us for either of them.

Mets:We don’t want them but do you want to swap pieces of shit?

Bloom: How’s the wife and family?

That is precisely how the call went down.

Aldo was also on the IL with elbow tendinitis in his throwing arm at the time of the trade. While having had success, he had not pitched above A-ball at the time of the trade.

So I don't know if I'd think Winckowski is a good comp at all - healthy arm, good AAA numbers, rushed ML debut at 24, can hold his own as a starter against average MLB lineups. That's got massive value, I think. On some clubs he'd be up to stay.

Not while Tony Larussa and Bobby Valentine are still drawing breaths.

Is Bloom in this category? Too soon to tell. If he bites at this trade, the needle starts to move a little.

So if they're in the playoff picture, and they acquire an average 1Bman and an effective reliever is that "definitive" or "tinkering" ? Was trading Nomar "buying" or "selling"?
I hope Bloom does stuff that takes me more than six seconds to figure out.

I’d rather watch Tristan Casas fill out an application for life insurance than watch Bobby Dalbec or Franchy Cordero do anything on a baseball field.
