Mike Lupica, the face of the News' sports section for decades, is out.  So is Sports Editor Teri Thompson.  Bill Madden.  Filip Bondy.  Hank Gola.

The paper has reportedly been hemorrhaging money and owner Mort Zuckerman couldn't find a buyer after exploring a deal this year.  So today he said: "Barzini is dead.  So is Phillip Tattaglia.  Moe Greene.  Stracci.  Cuneo.  Today I settled all family business."

It must be particularly painful for Lupica, since he lost his cushy ESPN 98.7 New York radio gig a few weeks' ago.

Jeez, that's quite the rough thread title. When I saw it I immediately assumed the worst. Those are the times we live in I guess.

On topic, the newspaper biz keeps struggling. I think Lupica will be fine, maybe make a bit less money. He's a big name, knows NY like nobody and can be quite good.

Lupica was a great writer although I disagreed with his political stances from time to time. Madden was a legendary baseball writer although his Yankee bias shown through. The writer I will really miss is Hank Gola. He was a great golf and Giants beat writer.

And Manish Mehta keeps his job...though I imagine he's not paid near as highly as the others. But man is he bad.
