I dont know about on the margins, but I think yesterday's Sox lineup probably qualifies as rule-breaking. But whtever meaning you want to ascribe to it, its a stupid rule, put there because MLB seems to think fans are stupid, and the visiting team should ignore it if following it is not in its best interests for the game that do count.

If I'm with the Marlins, I probably do my bitching behind the scenes, cognizant that: a)  I'm probably right; but b) I look like a whiny asshole; and c) my regular team looks like a minor league outfit, and d) I dont like ridicule.

I find it a little hard to believe the Marlins don't like ridicule.

Exactly, if you read that article, the stands were full of Sox fans. They intended to fleece away fans and then complained about the product.

But the Sox fans had already bought their super premium priced tickets, are they worried that they won't be able to get more Sox fans to pay their inflated ticket prices again next spring?

This is why I think Arizona spring training is better. The location of the game never really makes an impact on line-up, where in Florida that 5 hour bus ride makes a difference sometimes. Plus, it almost never rains in AZ. It rains a lot in Florida.

Seriously, if selling tickets and generating revenue didn't matter, and ST was solely about getting ready for the season, every team would be in AZ.

Not so, Boomer. Miami Marlins officials were "outraged" the Red Sox sent only JBJ and Lavarnway after they sold "premium" tickets to see the World Champs. This article sums up my feelings pretty well.

Marlins fans should certainly be outraged because their own team is hard pressed to put 4 regular major league players on the field in any regular game.  Fans should be outraged and embarrassed about the lack of commitment by Marlins ownership to field a competitive team.  It was chutzpah by their management to charge premium prices to their fans on the promise that they would get to see at least one real major league team in a spring training game by counting on the Red Sox to supply it.  The AAA Red Sox were clearly competitive with the regular Marlins and, once everyone develops, the Red Sox will probably be significantly better with the lineup they played yesterday in another season or two.

I think JWH does not appreciate the Marlins owners pocketing all his revenue sharing dollars and let JF know it was ok to send a skeleton crew .  Red Sox owe the Marlins nothing.  The highest paid player on that team is Stanton at 6.5 million with Salty close behind at 6 million.  They should let their fans, and Red Sox fans in to ST games free.  Of course, rules are rules so I guess JWH gets a slap on the wrist fine.

It does highlight the reason ST is so long though, teams and MLB probably make a small profit from it given salaries are not paid to players and revenues are earned with ticket sales, concessions and TV.

Well, to be fair, Henry does owe the Marlins for being able to get used to being a Baseball owner, before offloading them to Loria so he could move on to the Red Sox.

So, in that sense, the Marlins were kind of like the AAA Spring Training to become the Red Sox owner.

AZ ST is much much better on many levels, including the ones you mentioned.

While I understand the frustration, and think their complaint is valid on a lot of levels, I am really enjoying all the jokes around this that people have been throwing out there.

Mostly I wonder if the Red Sox will use variable pricing on their next Marlins series, because I would really like to go to Fenway for free.

Yeah, real nice. Insinuating that Ben wouldn't have called/apologized unless MLB urged him to do so. Fuck you and your embarrassment of a franchise.

I really hope this was an intentional FU by the Sox organization because the Marlins deserve it. And either way, as lambolt said, this is just hilarious. Enjoy the absurdity of what's going on here

Maybe the Sox can use this type of scenario in the much anticipated Stanton trade:

"We will send Britton, Cecchini, and Webster, and agree to play more regulars against you in future spring training games, so you can make a few extra bucks."

How can Loria turn down that offer?

The Sox should claim that they sent players who will be regulars on the 2014 Marlins after the Stanton trade

Serious question: does the thinner air in Arizona affect teams' ability to evaluate hitters and pitchers in ST?

FWIW, teams have been applying Dynamic Pricing for Red Sox and Yankees spring training games for years. In addition, some teams force fans to not only pay extra, they force fans to purchase a second non-Sox or MFY game as a package.

Obviously the Red Sox and Yankees fans travel well and we can't blame the other franchises for using ST games as an opportunity to gouge the fans. Let the buyer beware.

We have a season ticket to JetBlue Park and believe me, the locals are quite vocal of their displeasure when they realize the regulars only get three AB for the first couple of weeks of games. The park empties out in the 7th as the lineup is comprised of AA and AAA players, most of whom the locals don't recognize. The same folks who asked "who the hell is this?" when Bogaerts entered a ST game n 2013 are bitching about Cecchini, Brentz, Holt, etc. "I DROVE ALL THE WAY FROM NAPLES FOR THIS?!!!!!"

These games are the only baseball a majority of the locals attend all year and are uninformed old goats. That being said, these "Florida fans" drive me insane.

Cheri failed to add that a large number of fans at JBP are one or two week snowbirds who also feel that traveling 1500+miles entitles them to all stars in the one game they attend. Even more so for a sox fan at the Minn park.

I enjoy watching the young players in AA or AAA games because the majority of them have goals far beyond where they are. I like to think that in a ML spring training game they would be trying to impress so you would be watching a good effort at least.

I agree with the above. The real ST fun isn't watching famous guys get their hacks in playing "meaningless" games...it's watching developing players taking some of the most important at bats and pitching the most important innings of their careers.

And it's about watching guys on the roster bubble struggle for major-league jobs -- they have something serious to play for.

Also, fu3k the Marlins. Their few remaining fans should take them to court for malpractice.

I mean -  that response from the owner of the team is hilarious - but does anyone else wish these guys (Lucky, Henry) would just keep their mouths shut? It looks petty.

In most circumstances I would agree, but when we're talking about the Marlins and that ownership and leadership group, no. If you want to go on national TV and brag to the world about how you ripped off your fans to fund a stadium, don't spend money on a roster, and then have the audacity to whine about selling tickets for Spring Training games, fuck you (not you, TSC). This is a valid response.

In regards to the first one - Henry bought the Marlins in 1999, right after the Wayne Huizenga firesale correct? So he had three years to build from nothing. And oh btw they won immediately after he left too.

The second one I can't argue with (except hey Loria was involved in that too). But Sheehan is completely missing the point. Loria has turned the Marlins into the laughingstock of MLB between the frequent firesales, the stadium fiasco, and trading away most of their major league talent. Henry, meanwhile, has turned the Sox into the model organization in MLB.

And if you want to play the payroll card look at Tampa Bay. They're one of the top 5, maybe top 3, organizations in the game right now despite similar problems.

Joe Sheehan is a fat whiny baby bitter that his Yankees have been left in the dust by the Red Sox.

While the Henry to the Red Sox thing was shady, not least for the way it totally fucked over the Expos and long term the Marlins, Henry was absolutely the most qualified owner for the Red Sox. Baseball would not have been better off had any of the other ownership groups bought the Red Sox, especially losers like Charles Dolan and Frank McCourt.

I don't think Henry tweets that if the Marlins don't continue with making it an issue. I imagine that the Red Sox feel they did nothing wrong, that they're just trying to do what they need to do for spring training, but they heard the Marlins were upset so they sent a polite message explaining it had to do with various injuries and such. When the Marlins still complained, even mocking them for the apology, that's when it turns to "Fuck off" mode.

and, the Sox were fined..

According to multiple industry sources, Major League Baseball disciplined the Red Sox in the form of a small fine after the team fielded a lineup against the Marlins in Jupiter, Fla., on Thursday that failed to meet MLB guidelines for the participation of lineup regulars. The Sox lineup featured only one player — center fielder Jackie Bradley Jr. — viewed as a legitimate possibility for a place in the team’s Opening Day lineup. MLB guidelines, meanwhile, stipulate that teams feature four players who were regulars (either everyday players of regular platoon members) in the previous season or four players with a legitimate shot at being regulars during the forthcoming season

I say go with the starting nine as deep into the game as you can, preferably it will be a late spring game where they may get more innings,. Give the top 3 of the rotation 2-3 inning each followed by the set up guy and closer. Pedal to the metal, don't let up and then listen to the bitches complain about that. .
