They don't deserve it. 2nd year in a row. I don't blame Claude either.

Claude answers "hindsight" on the Marchand questions.

I normally don't give shit who shoots in the shootouts. They are dumb coin flips, put McQuaid out there for all I care. Julien was playing the numbers. I get Marchand was 0-3 this year and a couple of the other shooters had some minimal success. However, if I'm going down, I'm going down with the guy that scored 36 goals for me this year. You can't leave that bullet in the chamber.

Playoff odds calculator has them:

Flyers: 80%
Red Wings: 65%
Bruins: 55%

(Two go to playoffs)

Certainly doesn't feel like they are more likely to make playoffs than not

No. They need to win out and Detroit needs to get no more than three pts over three games.
B's don't need to win out if they win in reg vs. DET unless DET wins in reg tonight. Actually they still wouldn't have to win out as DET could lose Sat and B's get one point to get in.
Tonight is big but tomorrow night is a one game playoff. B's lose that game in regulation and they are done.

B's would hold the tiebreaker over PHI due to ROW. So a DET win tonight wouldn't be a death knell for them. Would just have to match PHI's point total the rest of the way and they could realistically drop 2 of the last 3 vs. TOR, PIT, @NYI.

Bruins have to win out to realistically have a chance, unless the loser of tonight's DET/PHI game completely goes in the tank.

By "win out", you mean win two games.

I am looking for psychological gains here. Somehow the phrase "Bruins need to win out" sounds impossible, but Bruins winning the next two games seems like at least somewhat of a possibility

This team is exhausting, I'm almost at the point where I want them to put me out of my near-misery once and for all. The problem is they could pull off a little run, Holtby gets a groin strain, etc.—the box of chocolates that is the NHL playoffs holds many surprises. In any fanciful scenario though, Tuukka would need to raise his game.

Its hard to be a world-class goalie when you have lower-than-replacement-level people playing in front of you. Tuukka standing on his head doesn't do much when team get wide open looks off odd-man rushes multiple times a game.

Points taken, I'm not a denier of the team's Achilles Heel but I don't think the D had much to do with him whiffing on the Slavin wrester from 55 feet out. Partial screen yes, but he knew it was coming—had seen that the shot was going to come from him and didn't track it well enough. He's been great in stretches but has only really stolen one game in memory in the last couple weeks of horridness. I can't even remember the opponent but I remember that without him it absolutely would have been a loss.

So correct me if I'm wrong, but here is the simple breakdown:

  • Bruins get in if win both (beating DET in regulation) and then Detroit loses in regulation to the Rangers
  1. Also looks like a Bruins regulation win vs. DET coupled with DET loss vs. NYR and a Bruins 1-point gain in last game does it.
  • Bruins get in if get same or more points in last two games then Philly gets in their last three

Otherwise, collapse complete.

If they win tonight in regulation and win against Ottawa I think they are in no matter what. The best Detroit could do in that case is tie in points and the Bruins would hold the first tiebreaker (wins).

First tiebreaker is ROW.

Edit: If the B's win (no SO) tonight and Saturday they'd end the year with 95 points and 39 ROW. If the Wings lose on Saturday in regulation then they'd have 95 points and 39 ROW. From there it is head to head. They would have the head to head.

Ok that makes sense. Thanks for the info. Shootout wins don't count for tiebreaker purposes. Yep, the Bruins need help. BRK is right. This sucks

So Detroit will be playing extremely conservatively tonight and pushing for a tie. If it reaches overtime do they just get their 3 biggest skaters and park them in front of the net. Anything that goes to shootout and they clinch the Atlantic spot.

It's early, I haven't had my coffee so maybe I'm missing something--How would just getting to a SO clinch the Atlantic for DET? If they get to SO and Bruins win, they gain a point and will be one back with one to play.

You're correct of course. I was only looking at them clinching ROW if that happens and forgot about to give the Bruins the extra point if they were to win. Also without coffee at that point. Hockey math is hard

Bottom line, they still have a good chance, and I would argue a great chance if they can get a regulation win tonight

Because the MLB Extra Innings is in free preview mode, the channels overlap with the NHL package, so this game should be on TV somewhere wherever you are.

You mean if the Wings win in a SO at MSG, right? In your scenario, the Bruins would have 95 points, Detroit 93, and all tie-breakers are pointless.
