Flames fire Geoff Ward and bring back Darryl Sutter

apparently I stepped out of a time machine and am back in 2003.
The Flames have named Darryl Sutter as head coach after relieving Geoff Ward of his coaching duties.
Sutter coached the Los Angeles Kings from 2011-2017, winning the Stanley Cup in 2012 and 2014. He has been a head coach in the NHL for 18 seasons with Chicago, San Jose, Calgary and Los Angeles, accumulating a 634-467-101-83 record which ranks him 17th in NHL history for wins and 12th in Stanley Cups won. He has had winning seasons in 15 of his 18 years behind an NHL bench as head coach. Most recently he was named as an advisor to the Anaheim Ducks coaching staff in July of 2019.
This is Sutter's second stint with the Flames after originally being named as the teams head coach on December 28, 2002 and coaching through July 12, 2006. He was also the team's General Manager from April 11, 2003 through December 28, 2010. In his first full season with Calgary, Darryl guided the Calgary Flames to game seven of the Stanley Cup Finals in 2004 after defeating Vancouver, Detroit and San Jose. He had a winning record all three seasons behind the Flames bench with a 107-73-15-15 record.
Edit: and not an interm coach. He is signed for 3 years
Darryl Sutter isn’t just taking over for the rest of the season in Calgary. He signed a three-year deal, this season plus two more.

Abusive is a bit much. Asshole in the sense he rode his guys and has a shelf life but it was a hell of a shelf life.

Edit: I stand corrected in that Carcillo accused him of kicking a player. Nothing seems to have come from it but who knows.

Jack Johnson placed on waivers. Signed a 1 year, $1.15M contract in the off-season so a reasonable contract. He's had some injury problems this year.

Should the Bruins be interested. He can't be worse than Tinordi can he?

There aren't a lot of players in the league I'd say could be worse than Tinordi - JJ just might be one of them however, hard pass

I dont keep up with the refs like many here, but isn't Tim Peel generally one of the bad ones? Looks like he might be in some hot water (for context, he's the one who called the penalty; the story doesn't say he said it):
With 12:42 remaining in the second period, the Nashville broadcast captured audio from an on-ice official saying, "It wasn't much, but I wanted to get a f---ing penalty against Nashville early."

He's not just one of the bad ones, he's known across the league as the worst.

If this isn’t accompanied by the NHL making it very clear, both publicly and internally, that they don’t want officials looking for calls in the service of “game management”, then it’s just a scapegoating of a guy who was already on the way out, pure and simple.

He was going to retire 4/24 anyway. Just total performance art by the nhl to try to show that they pretend to care about this kind of thing.

I wonder if ole Timmy was smart enough to keep copies of things that lay out that what he did is exactly the type of stuff the NHL grades them on.

Would be interesting if he was a smart vindictive asshole.

I have to agree. This is just a big show from the NHL. Make up calls have been part of the game forever. Players and coaches complain on every shift, all contact, every game, all game. The refs make bad calls, non-calls that should have been calls, there is embellishment from the players that contribute to bad calls, that create the need for a make-up call to keep the pot from boiling over. Fire the bad refs and the ones who show bias against teams and players. This guy should have been quietly retired. The NHL has no integrity to protect. Rant mode off.

Totally disagree. You made a mistake, it happens. Don't compound it by making the next one on purpose. Don't change what you call because a coach is complaining. I'm looking at you, 2019 Finals.

They want to show they care about bad officiating they can get rid of Colin Fucking Campbell as a start.

I with Napkin here. Make-up calls dont keep the pot from boiling over. Making consistent calls in-game can do that though. I've never been close enough to know, but in soccer, for instance, we can frequently see the ref giving a player "one more of those and it's yellow for you." I assume that the same thing happens in hockey. Its nearly impossible to get league-wide consistency on calls like interference or roughing. But whatever Ref. X's view of it is, he shouldn't abandon it mid-game because he (or his partner) missed one.

Former ref Kerry Fraser in today's Athletic on this matter:

Fraser added that there were times in his career when he would "want to have a penalty — not create one, but to have one happen for me that was a gift that I could make a call for one reason or the other to bring the temperature down in a game."

I think we just have a diffferent definition of make-up call. I dont see Fraser saying he would change his view on what "tripping" is. He just hoped someone would trip someone.

Calming the temperature of a game is where they arbitrarily pull one guy out of a scrum and put him in the box and hand out a PP.

We all know make up calls are a thing. How many times in the game thread do we go "next one is on us" after the Bruins get 2-3 PP's in a row? The league needs to address it. It's long been a problem. Peel was only doing what he's always done. Colin Campbell is not the guy to lead the officiating department. I have no idea how he is still in power after the Savard email fiasco.

Implicit in Fraser's comment is that he could also just as easily and arbitrarily not call that penalty. I do think the league wants the games managed this way.

On one hand, good riddance. But I'll echo everyone here that this seems more like firing Peel for saying the quiet part out loud (regarding how NHL games are officiated) than being a bad referee.

My hope for this league to pull its head out of its ass is still near zero.

One of the NHL's worst referees who has a reputation of being inconsistent with who he calls for penalties and for what gets caught doing what we all know he does. I'm shocked.

Wyshynski's article from 2015 where he interviewed Peel is really interesting reading

So is his article today, which ends with:
Peel has been one of the NHL's most maligned officials, with fans using social media to critique his calls through the years. In 2015, Peel was removed from officiating a New Jersey Devils home game after being photographed at a bar drinking with a reporter. [Editor's note: The reporter was ESPN's Greg Wyshynski, the writer of this piece.]

They are a playoff team and needed a center. They picks to burn. They still have 12 picks in the draft this season.

I probably would've aimed higher but They are LTIR'd so they don't have much to work with. Anything bigger is dollar in dollar out.
