I know you guys like to joke about Lemieux's garage league comment but ... you can kind of see where he was coming from, no?

The “head contact was unavoidable” part is really baffling. Krejci was hunched tad, but his head never dips or ducks before contact. Schenn had a good long look at him on the way in and could’ve easily gone lower.

But hey, I’m glad they got that Heinen stick tap out of the game. Really no place for it.

5 teams scored 6 or more goals tonight, and one of them lost. Three more scored 5. And one of them lost.

Word is that the NHL Board of Governors approved the rule change for goalie interference. The situation room has the final call starting Wednesday.

Well that's official then. I want no part of Toronto in the first round. Let someone else lose two games because of questionable calls coming form the command center.

The Winnipeg Sun is reporting no discipline for Morrissey. NHL told them via email.

So yeah, fuck us.

At what point are we allowed to have a persecution complex? The freaking guy was playing left D and came steaming over to the right corner explicitly to slam a guy while leaving his feet. You have to consider the circumstances and with a couple of seconds left he knew he could abandon his position and take liberties. Even if Gyzelcyk didn't turn, it was clearly charging with intent to injure. This was 1000X less a hockey play than the Backes hit. If I was Neely, I'd be on a plane right now on my way to Parros office. Teams are going to figure out they can go after Boston.

There have been 6 boarding suspensions this season. I’ll look through them all but here is Paquette (1 game) on Krug from earlier this season. Not all that different from the Grzelcyk hit.

Grz puts the brakes on when Morrissey is already committed and Morrissey did not have no time to adjust, but I think the game situation (less than a second in the period) and charging aspect were worthy of a second look. But we’re still at the dart board.

Beyond the lack of consistency for DoPS, the problem is they put a lot of onus on the player on the receiving end. They say they care about headshots but if you duck or are hunched over, too bad. We went through this with McAvoy and Krejci. Here we are with Grzelyck and and boarding. It is not OK but if the puck carrier turns and heaven forbid tries to avoid a hit at the last second then, well, he asked for it.

I try to get worked up about the inconsistencies with the DoPS but I find myself resigned to the dartboard. The headline of the league's own story from Parros being named head of DoPS tells you all you need to know about where their priorities are and the accountability (lack thereof) within the organization:

0 career-ending slashes during Parros's reign, a resounding success

Watching the Morrisey hit in slow motion a bunch of times, I just don't think it's inconsistent for it to not be a suspension. It was reckless and the type of hit that should be 5 for general recklessness, even though it's objectively not a board or a charge or a hit to the head. I don't want that hit in the game, but I can't quantify why it was bad without covering a lot of ordinary hits that happen every game.

Morrisey comes down hard into the slot for a shot opportunity, sees the puck in the corner and goes and chases it, then looks as clumsy as you would expect a defenseman to look forechecking. He half poke checks half plays the body, and when Grz isn't where he expects, he's too out of control to do anything and just plows right through him. He did not leave his feet until he was riding up on Grz.

I think the Schenn/Krejci and Hornqvist/McAvoy hits were significantly worse.

Also, Marchand proper boarded Scheifele there, but eye for an eye, it was as bad as Scheifele's hit on Pasta earlier. Hope he's ok.

Did Scheifele even hit the boards after Brad made contact with him? I remember a follow-through hit that simply dumped (cleanly) Scheifele on the ice by the goal line - never making contact with the boards at all...

You think a hit in the chest, in front of the goal line causing a player to slide into the boards is boarding? What are you talking about?

He's slow to get up because he got popped in the chest by Marchand a few feet away form the boards, so it caused an awkward fall into the boards.

Under no definition of boarding was that a penalty on Marchand. It was as clean a hit as you can make in the NHL.

He was named the first star of the game and got to take an on-ice curtain call, too. I can't get enough of stories like this...I was an emergency goalie of sorts for my college team, having volunteered to practice in goal with the JV team for a couple of years after discovering - while going to the rink to interview the senior team coach for the student newspaper - that they were shooting at a target at one end of the ice during practice. I got to dress for one JV game at Merrimack but never played, but I would of course daydream about scenarios in which I might get the call. For Foster to actually get the call here, it's so awesome.

(FWIW, I always assumed that even in the unlikely event that both goalies came down with food poisoning or something during a road trip I was covering as a journalist, they actually would have dressed one of the other skaters in goal. I wonder if I'm wrong about that, though...I know soccer players can serve as emergency goalies easily enough, but maybe that would be much tougher in hockey?)

“Who would have thought?” [Foster] said. “You just keep grinding away in men’s league and eventually you get your shot.”

Interesting rule I hadn’t heard of until last night- apparently the NHL allows teams to warm up a goalie if they aren’t on the bench. The Blackhawks kept Foster in the dressing room for this very reason, and he was able to get a few shots to warm up prior to the game resuming.

Fantastic story.

Yes, I have watched this video of all 7 of Foster's saves at least 10 times now:

https://www.nhl.com/video/fosters-emergency-nhl-debut/t-277350912/c-59403703

I used to listen to Pat Foley call Blackhawks games on AM radio from Chicago from my bedroom in Atlanta as a kid when atmospheric conditions were suitable, and I caught a lot of him on SportsChannel America back in the day as well...how cool is it that Foster gets to have Foley call him making saves like this?

The worst was listening to Foley call games with Jamie Storr. Probably any radio guy but I distinctly remember him yelling "Storr SAVE" a bunch one random Hawks-Kings game.

I also grew up in Chicago listening to Pat Foley, can't believe he's still doing games. I would record all of his goal calls during the post-game show on my tape recorder. I think my favorite was one where he said after a Denis Savard breakaway, "The pearly gates were open and Denis Savard slipped it in between his legs."

Actually, what's really cool is that Foster was the emergency backup for BOTH teams. NHL rules state someone has to be in building that can dress for either team in case of emergency.

Yeah, the home team is supposed to have a few goalies on hand in case of an emergency for either team. Foster said he is usually there 12-15 times a season.

That would be great if they found the men's league he played in and put his stats in there.

"2015-16, Blackbeers, 10-12-1, 5.43 GAA"
There's definitely gonna be some pushing and shoving in his next game when some overweight lawyer snipes him and talks shit.

His post game interview was equally fantastic

He's going to get more on-camera time if he keeps doing interviews like that. NBC is totally going to do a puff piece/on-site pregame interview of him during the cup finals as a "hockey dreams come true" story.
