They're in the 13th now, still tied at 10, 40 degree weather. I see a lot of empty seats.

Alex Wilson is up to 60 pitches and in his 4th inning for DET, Polanco put his 57th pitch well over the fence for a 13-10 lead for PIT, still top 13.

Pitching coach visits Alex Wilson who is at 57 pitches. Next pitch leads to 3-run HR by Gregory Polanco. What did Bosio say, I wonder.
(I type so slowly on my phone.)

Tigers have two guys on with one out, tying run up. If they tie this up again, that would be epic.

Nope, 13-10 PIT final.

That almost got me all the way to the night games, nice.

Missed the game but saw the box score.

I wondering how to word it in google, what the highest matching runs scored in the 9th is (where they game is tied after 9)

Anyone know how to find something like that on baseball reference or almanac? I tried it a bunch of ways, but it's still too vague.

How many fans do you think are left at at Cubs@Marlins, now into the bottom of the 17th?

No fans of Marlin catcher Chad Wallach: 0-7, 5K.
F9, K, 6-3, K, K, K, K. Ended the inning 4 times.

That is awfully impressive. Or impressively awful.
(This after he went 0-3, 3K, BB on Opening Day.)

I'm thinking this may be something worth tracking...

As bad as Thursday felt, at least Boston isn't the Dodgers, who've lost two 1-0 games to the Giants on Joe Panik homers. Last night's saw them pull Wood, on 90 pitches through 8 innings of 1 hit ball (and that's with his team committing 4 errors), only to have Kenley Jansen give it up. Ouch.

That sounds like an incredibly bad idea.
I kind of agree that it does superficially, but the more you investigate, the more you realize it's probably fine as a very occasional thing.

1) Less balls are hit to CF these days (27% less than in 2007).
2) CC is a ground ball pitcher, and allows very weak contact on average, one of the few lowest SPs in all of MLB in average exit velocity allowed.
3) Judge played CF in college.
4) Going on home to first time, Judge's speed is about average for a CF.
5) Gardner can always come in later in the game, once Estrada is out, Judge to RF, Stanton to LF, McKinney out.

It might even be just a one time thing, Ellsbury should be back by Thursday and then they will have two healthy CFs again.

Yonder Alonso's first hit for the Tribe is a grand slam off last year's teammate James Paxton.

...and Ichiro just stole a home run away from Jose Ramirez.

He's just being unconventional... I mean, if the umpires are going to let you wait to warm up your reliever after he's already entered the game (not to mention eject the opposing manager for complaining), why not?

Those umps should be punished

Edit; more than just having to watch the horrendous fundamentals of the Phillies tonight.

And PHI needed a position player to pitch one of the innings.

There has to be more to the story. Like some sort of communication failure with the bullpen that the umps knew about and were compensating for.

If not, then Kapler is not long for the majors and the behavior of the umps is simply inexcusable.

Barely related but I was watching on Extra Innings and they play the Tomahawk Chop theme literally after every pitch when the Braves are up. It is 10 times more annoying than the shitty ass horns they play all night in Oakland.

I just saw the specifics, I thought the Kapler brainlock was late in garbage time, but the game was still in reach, down 5-2 in the 3rd. He has made 18 pitching changes in 3 games, hopefully for Philly fans he gets fired before he starts hurting people.

I can kind of understand the umps if they legitimately felt they were preventing injury risk:

But Kapler should be fined for sure

Kapler is a joke as a manager that isn't funny. Didn't the Phillies braintrust opt not to talk with JF (who I'm happy is gone from the Sox, but is miles of mediocrity better than this guy), or did he interview and not beat this guy?

I thought they should have kept the guy they had for another year.

I live with a Phillies fan. She hated the hire and if the rest of the Broad Street Brigade feels the same it should be a fun summer (spring just started, yikes for me) for the coconut oil idiot.

Kapler is Canseco Jr. without the baseball talent.

Did anyone here think Kapler was a good hire and should have been on the Sox radar?

I'd have more sympathy if they had the guts to take the heat for it. Instead, these asshats ejected the Braves manager for being right about the rule book and then blamed Kapler for their own lack of integrity.

Utterly indefensible. The umps should be suspended. And the Phillies should be forced to keep Kapler on for the entire year.

Yeah, ejecting Snitker takes it too far. The guy is in the right, don’t really care what he said, you can’t toss him. I get protecting Milner, but could they just tell Kapler if Milner isn’t ready to get in the game they can’t make the change and keep the original pitcher out there?

i mean one or two scoreless innings and that line isn't terrible, especially for his first ML game. He is prob psyched he isn't playing in BOS/NY with all the pressure that comes from that

Yeah. Only 1 BB in 5 IP is encouraging and he only gave up 4 base runners. Really just had 1 bad inning, which can happen to anyone.

So we are in for another season of the reds pitching being a dumpster fire.

Actually Ohtani got through 6, and retired 14 of 15 (only allowing a walk) after the HR, very good first outing especially considering how bad he was in the spring.

I wonder if they will send him out for another now that the Angels got another couple of runs. He did hit 98 in the last inning.

Second straight Easter Sunday that Bryce Harper has homered twice.

I'd make some sort of clever comment about that but I'm Jewish and would screw it up somehow.

Fuck Brian Dozier and the Twins:

Minnesota Twins players were upset Sunday that Baltimore Orioles catcher Chance Sisco bunted against the shift for a hit in the ninth inning of Minnesota's 7-0 victory.

With one out in the ninth, Sisco bunted toward the vacant left side of the infield to get on base. The Orioles eventually loaded the bases, but Jose Berrios worked out of trouble, getting Jonathan Schoop to pop out to the catcher and Adam Jones to strike out to complete the three-hit shutout.

Despite that, Twins second baseman Brian Dozier spoke out about Sisco's bunt after the game.

"I could've said something, but they have tremendous veteran leadership over there, with Chris Davis, Adam Jones and those guys," Dozier told reporters. "I'm sure they'll address it and move forward."

Berrios added to reporters: "I don't care if he's bunting. I just know it's not good for baseball in that situation. That's it."
You're giving the player a free chance at a hit and you are pissed that he took advantage of it? This is fucking ridiculous. So now no one should bunt against a shift? Fuck those turds. THEY ARE STILL TRYING TO WIN THE GAME! I am beyond repulsed at this reaction.

The only time I have seen such a comment before this referred to breaking up a no-hitter. Otherwise, it's nuts. (And even in that case, it is not the role of the opposition batter to help out the pitcher in any way.)

Wow seems like that Orioles manager isn't RESPECTING THE GAME. Whoever he is, he must be one of these new stat nerds that love the analytics.

They need to replace him with a tough, old school guy who will get them to PLAY THE GAME THE RIGHT WAY. Should get them to shave those sideburns, too.

Yea it makes no sense. Why apply the shift in the first place then? They did something they thought gave them a competitive advantage up 7 runs and chance saw an opportunity to make it work in his favor. A smart play

The only thing I can come up with to justify the Twins' being upset about the bunt is if they were just in a rush to get out of town. Almost like they're still in spring training mode where the 9th inning isn't where you try to stage a rally, you just get the game over with.

Yes I came to post this, and I agree it's idiotic of Dozier to take this stance. "Here, we're going to put all our fielders over on this side, so swing away and hit right into them. That's the way we play the game. Just roll over and lose to us."
I'm surprised there isn't more bunting against the shift as a way of keeping defenses honest.
