Word is (via all of the beat writers on twitter) Mayer has signed for slot value of $6,664,000.
How often does a guy get drafted and immediately jump to the top of top prospect lists, or even as high as 14 or so?
I don’t remember exactly to what extent, but I’m sure Trout, Strasburg, and Harper were highly ranked post-draft…
Mark Prior was #2. Teixeira was top 10. It's not that rare. Trout was in the 50s, he wasn't in the top 10 until after 2 years of being drafted.
Harper was 1st, Strasburg was 1st/2nd.
Fangraphs had Rutschman at 16. Tork, Mize, and Mayer all in the thirties as top ranked player in the draft.
If you were trying to build a Xander successor from scratch you would probably just say “Why don’t we just make another Xander but with better defense?”
Obviously a long long way to go, but everything from the leadership qualities to the offensive potential to the average-ish speed sounds like a Bogaerts-type player…but better defense.
And yes, he just signed so everything is going to be a glowing report, but it’s hard not to be excited. Still very pleasantly shocked at how the draft played out and can’t wait to see him get some at bats.

Whats funny is that even if Mayer has a Xander Bogaerts level career, that card will be worth 1/10th of that value in 15 years.
That is a risky long-term hold as the trading market will almost certainly deflate in the next few years and unless Mayer is Ernie Banks, the value of that card will tank.
I'm not into card collecting at all. So it appears that you can buy a 240 pack of 2021 Bowman cards for about $250. Why is that card so valuable? Because very few Mayer cards have been made? Because very few Mayer cards of that quality (mint 9) exist? Both?
A superfractor is a 1/1, meaning there is only one of that variant produced. So it’s his rarest rookie card, however it’s manufactured rarity. It’s literally like pulling a golden ticket.
The sapphire version of his rookie card goes for around $140-150 on eBay right now. So this card is quite literally almost 1000x more expensive than a good base version of his rookie.
Just for reference even rare ARod and Ernie Banks rookie cards go for less than $1,000 dollars. But back then, there weren’t true 1/1 cards.
It’s about the scarcity and the hype of a top prospect playing for a big market team.
I definitely wouldn't have paid that kind of money for it, but damn if that isn't a spectacular card.

Which is why you’re better off paying up the $150 bucks for the Mayer card on eBay than buying a box of sapphire.
Because you can be out $400 bucks and still not get the card you wanted. It’s obviously gambling and looking for the big hit, but it usually doesn’t end up like the guy that pulled the superfractor.
Oh, I agree for sure. I will probably break down and buy one at some point, but part of the enjoyment for me is opening packs. I am relegated to the base stuff now, though, since all the good stuff is so expensive (I did spend $300 on a Bowman Draft box, specifically in the hunt for Mayer.... didn't get anything serial numbered but at least got the base and a few of the inserts).
Are we this lucky? The Sox tank for one worthless 60-game fake season and we get this guy falling to us in the draft? And then the Padres spend ungodly sums of money to clear up our shortstop situation for us, against our will?

Portland is prospect central right now: Mayer, Yorke, Rafaela, Meidroth, Hickey, Liu, Gambrell. And then there are some lottery ticket guys: Kavadas, McDonough, Rosier, Dearden, Sikes and several relievers.
Jasson Dominguez still the youngest, two months younger than Mayer (he has been in AA all season).

I haven't done a deep dive, but I feel like AA is where a lot of teams are sending their prospects for final seasoning until they are ready for the call. There is an absurd talent gap between A/A+ and AA right now, and it seems like that is the level where a lot of the non-prospects are getting weeded out (as in, they don't even make it to AA).
I wouldn't be a little bit surprised to see Mayer struggle in Portland for a while, but I am pretty stoked to see what the future holds for this kid.
I don't think anyone has considered a full season of AAA to be a necessary part of the development process in at least 10-20 years. However, it actually seems to me that AAA is starting to become a prospect level again with fewer AAAA journeymen than there used to be. I might very well be wrong about that and it could just be anecdotal because I have a narrow focus that doesn't go much beyond the organization I follow... but it could also be a logical result of MLB getting rid of so many minor league jobs – and thus roster filler – as compared to a couple of years ago.
There is also talk about more guys, pitchers particularly, heading to AAA because of the sticky ball being used at AA. Teams want to see them without that ball.
