Can anyone speak to the significance, or lack thereof, of this:

That semester, his first on campus, some type of incident involving Manning and Naughright occurred. By request of the counsel of Peyton Manning, the details of that incident have been sealed and three-and-a-half pages concerning it have been redacted from the permanent record (see pages 11-14).

It's like a Nintendo game where first you have to take down the bad guy's armor, then go in for the kill.

This story provides cover for people to really dig in on the Hgh stuff.

Richard Deitsch and Mike Freeman have tweets out pointing attention to the King story.

Addendum: Given the years that have passed, you have to wonder if (and how many) other reporters were given this same document and did nothing with it.

Not only he got away with sexual assault ( resulting in Dr.Naughright dismissal, and one of his teammates losing his eligibility)
he and his dad destroyed her again in 2002 when they lied about her in his book.

Disgusting

I believe she's gotten two settlements from the Mannings for their breaches of the confidentiality agreement.

The spectre of the Mannings painting her as a slut with allegations of sleeping with the black athletes is stomach-churning.

And then blamed the facts that she was even in the locker room on feminism:

“Never mind that women in the men’s locker room is one of the most misbegotten concessions to equal rights ever made,” Manning wrote. “When Dad played, there was still at least a tacit acknowledgment that women and men are two different sexes, with all that implies, and a certain amount of decorum had to be maintained. Meaning when it came to training rooms and shower stalls, the opposite sex was not allowed. Common sense tells you why.”

Funny how the King story has taken off where others (like the Silverman story one on the link) haven't.

Crap. I didn't know any of this either. It was fun to sports-hate him as a worthy competitor with a smarmy persona. That's changed for me now.

I honestly didn't expect anything too crazy from reading this.

I was wrong. Wow. Manning is a reprehensible piece of shit. Full stop.

The time to print this was before the Super Bowl.
Maybe not. The Daily Beast piece went nowhere while this is the first weekend without NFL football games. It is true, though, that a tiny fraction of the public has ever crossed paths with the Daily Beast.

Similar to the Ray Rice video being seen, however, reading extensive passages of the filing (including the stuff from years later on) has much more impact than vague stories of some shitty "mooning" behavior.

PFT Commenter is something else!

There's also the fact that early on in the process, Tennesee tried to persuade her to change her story and blame it on two black athletes (they even suggested potential culprits) instead of Peyton.

The time for this to have come out was when the HGH allegations were first aired. Because Peyton's MO then was the same as it is now - lie without remorse while trying to use outside agents (university administrators then, private investigators now) to pressure the source of the allegations to change their story.

Wonder how long it will take for Jim Nantz to work himself up in a self-righteous lather over this ...

I knew about this but never knew all the details. The sexual assault is bad enough but the constant smearing after the fact combined with the blatant taunting with his book is too much to take. Clearly looks like a systematic plan to destroy her credibility/life after she had the audacity to take offense to an unwanted Manning teabagging.

Archie Manning is a piece of shit. Peyton Manning clearly is an entitled piece of shit. Eli may actually be the only decent guy in the family. But fuck Eli.

It's 100% certain that Manning retires now, yes? I mean, he's got his 2nd ring, he's got the HGH stuff kicking around, and now this. There's no way he plays another year (after his 9 TD/17 INT season) and faces these stories, is there?

Randy Scott of ESPN trashing Manning and taking on the Manning defenders on Twitter.
And he's all alone at the WWL in doing so at this point.

Remember, this is a network who holds up as a paragon of integrity a guy who pled guilty to obstruction of justice in a murder case. And since ESPN basically remains national sports news for the multitudes, it might take awhile for anything substantial to be presented there, if ever

What fucking pieces of shit these people are. I really hope that people in the real media run with this and give it the full Lance Armstrong treatment. Fuck the sports media apologists that have fawned over St. Peyton for so many years.

This 'boys will be boys' collegiate athletic bullshit culture needs to be stopped. I have a daughter and niece who are studying to be therapists and it infuriates and nauseates me in equal parts that they could be subjected to those pandered creeps.

And if Tom Brady or any other Boston sports athlete were outed in this manner, I'd be equally disgusted and angry at them too. Frankly, I root for my teams and their exploits but I've long passed the point where I wholeheartedly believe that any of them are beyond this type of behavior.

This = Yahtzee.

This helps establish a pattern of behavior where, as always, the coverup is worse than the original crime. It's the systematic and calculated attempt to destroy the victim that is so offensive here.

Charlie Sly on videotape... Deborah Davies/Al Jazeera... "I'm disgusted... Will find a big, fat, nothing" ... Ari Fleischer, the private dicks, scrubbing the records before the story appears... Recantation vetted by the family lawyers...

It's a virtual replay using the patented Manning playbook.

Slime ball.

This guy Mike Rollo seems like he was a real piece of shit (he died last year).

That said, it would be good to have him on the record, if he was going to offer comment (unlikely), now that people are *finally* taking these allegations seriously.

I will be surprised if this goes anywhere. I suspect those people who root for Manning will pass this story off as old news about an immature student athlete just having some fun. And those who don't or who like to get worked up into a lather on social media will get wound up about it.

However it won't change the fact that he is headed into a broadcast booth somewhere or that he will continue to pitch insurance, shit pizza and pisswater beer. This is the world we live in - those who have wealth, power and superior athletic abilities are held to a different standard to some extent. This doesn't mean they can get away with murder but they certainly get away with behaviors that would likely cost the common person their livelihood and reputation.

That article is written by Shaun King, which means 2 things--there's going to be one group that accepts what he says at face value and one that will completely disregard him.
I am as dismissive of Shaun King as you can get, but I think this was good work. He shows the appropriate amount of restraint, sticks to what is in the court filing and allows the reader to generate their own outrage based on the facts. It is good journalism and, shockingly high quality work by King.

As SJH said before, the only possible impact I can see from this story is that it could influence his retirement decision. Other than that, DeJesus is right: This isn't likely to amount to much

I'm not familiar with Shaun King's body of work and since shooting the messenger seems to be step one in the Manning playbook, I expect he'll be in their crosshairs. Discrediting Al Jazeera was a simple matter of linking them to anti-American sentiment, real or imagined. I'd appreciate anyone's insights on Shaun King's place in the sports journalism landscape and what he can expect in the way of a counter-strike.

Without getting into anything, and with snark intended: I would do your own research on King's work. He's been deeply involved in Black Lives Matter, so there's a firestarter.
I mean, all he really did was say that Manning's image is a lie -- and post the court documents. I don't see why his credibility would really impact the story -- it is the court documents that are explosive, not his commentary on things.

Because in today's world, it immediately becomes about attacking "the media" ... particularly when the subject of the story is deemed an untouchable. The comments King has been getting and those posted beneath others who have retweeted the story should tell you all you need to know about that particular mindset.

It's doubtful most of those reactions are coming from people who have bothered to read the story, and/or can't fully grasp the concept that it was based on court documents.

Odds are this is correct. A smart protest campaign by a group like NOW or perhaps an interview with Naughright herself on a show like 20/20 could force this story down another path. Of course, as the Commish knows, having the best media partners in the world means never having to say you're sorry. As I posted above, how many writers besides King have been sent that court document over the years?

Since they both signed a confidentiality agreement, an inteview from Naughright is probably out of the question.

I wonder who might be in possession of 74 pages of court documents, know that USA Today received them 13 years ago, and perhaps be so sickened by the recent adulation bestowed upon Peyton to anonymously send the documents to another reporter. If this was you, Ms. Naugright, good work ;-)

It amazes me that people are just learning the facts of this story. Especially since it is on wikipedia and has been for a very long time.
In any case, I think this story trumps the HGH allegations. In the latter case, taking HGH is not an offense to others, and the allegations are just that. In the former, it is factually established that peyton sexually assaulted a professional trainer and subsequently shreded her credibility.
No question he's a monster in my book.

Yeah, I get all of that. Laddie's comments were to us though. I'm not sure why King's previous work and credibility matter in this story is all. The story is the court documents showing Peyton is an a-hole.

I took Laddie's comments as a warning as to why this might not go as national as we might think it would/could/should. We, as a group, are predisposed to think of Manning as something other than his image.

And the story isn't just the court documents. King himself begins with a half-dozen or so paragraphs discussing why Manning always gets the benefit of the doubt -- drawing comparisons to Cam Newton, for instance -- and the previous coverage of the events.

As for the story being just the court documents, there's this to keep in mind from Florio:

The ensuing #longread from Shaun King of the Daily News is at times hard to follow, as it attempts to summarize most of the 74 pages in chronological order. Also, King’s article displays a clear anti-Peyton bias, and more than a little melodrama. This #notaslongread item comes from the 74-page document itself, which has been published in full by the Daily News.

Before going any farther, it’s important to understand what the 74-page document is, and what it isn’t. The 74-page document is a piece of advocacy. The 74-page document is something that was written by the lawyers representing Jamie Ann Naughright in her defamation case against the Mannings. The 74-page document is, necessarily, one-sided.

No surprise here, Breer thinks the story is "unbalanced" and didn't present Manning spin.

Fantastic day for Manning apologists. He's not guilty of sexual assault. The story is just "unbalanced."

I've read the NY Daily News story on Manning twice. Lots of people look bad. But not sure there's much balance to it, or much new in there.

You have to admit that Peyton's wikipedia entry lacks some oomph in this area:

The book was the subject of criticism for Manning's remarks concerning the University of Tennessee trainer, whom he had been accused of sexually assaulting. The trainer sued Manning for defamation, although Manning later settled for an undisclosed amount.[288]
The USA Today article cited was written by Mel Antonen and does recap some of the plaintiff's filing, but the article was written before the case was finished.

The case was settled a month later, but sure, the wikipedia entry is written more like an encyclopedia entry than a journal article.

How did the folks at ESPN/ 30-on 30 miss this chapter in the Book of Manning? Do we get an epilogue on how Archie wanted to find an A-A student-athlete to take the rap for Peyton?

One-sided court documents presented by a potentially biased journalist about a dumb kid making a boys will be boys mistake way back in the old days of the 90's. The narrative has been solidified.
