So basically the consensus seems to be that since Brady was treated unfairly by ESPN then Peyton should be treated unfairly by ESPN. And if ESPN doesn't unfairly shit on Peyton then they suck for not being assholes.

Do I have that right?

Not just ESPN. They're #2 in the pecking line here.

NFL. The motherfucking NFL has to do something about this and it's the most beautiful thing that's happened all season.

Deflategate went from late night tweet to leading the national news within 36 hours. There was practically no evidence of anything occurring, other than Mort's infamous 11 of 12 report.

It'll be very interesting how this story develops.

That's not really a shocking revelation, ghoff. Peyton should be innocent until proven guilty, sure. And if we were going to be big about this we'd all be saying it. But it's just sports and what we say doesn't really matter, so people are mad.

I'd like to believe that if any of us were put in a public position about this we'd be more reasonable about it.

ESPN and the NFL will ignore this not just because it's Peyton but because nobody wants to inspire digging into PED use in the league.

Frankly, I think the ESPNFL would try to kill this story if it involved Brady too.
I think you're right. Both this story and the deflategate allegations draw attention to the NFL's stupidity, but the difference is that the NFL can't claim ignorance about PED use as easily as they can about possible ball tampering.

I gotta think the timing of the supposed infraction has something to do with this being less immediately explosive than Deflategate.

That story blew up the day after NE punched a ticket to the SB and the accusation was about something happening that very week.

Not only is this supposed infraction 4 years old, but Manning is now the worst staring QB in football. If he had just lead the Broncos to a huge win to make the SB. And this pharmacist said he had given him HGH this winter, it would probably blow the fuck up, right?

For my part, I don't see it that way. I see it as loving the fact that they are in (what I/we assume to be) an uncomfortable place, in that they probably don't want to treat Peyton unfairly but when they don't it'll magnify the horrible way they handled the Brady affair.

If we put aside the persecution complexes for a moment and assume that none of the conspiracy theories were true, what might be the main distinguishing factor between the two teams that could cause some people in the media to jump on the Pats' story faster?

As I've said before, I'm a non-Pats fan who thought Brady got screwed. But as soon as I saw this thread title I knew what half of the posts would sound like.

Most people outside of the NE fan base don't really think Brady was treated unfairly. I wouldn't expect that angle to resonate.

True. Although it was in the 2011 CBA and Harrison got a suspension for admitting HGH usage back in 2007.

Even if many seem to agree it makes sense for players to use it considering the sparse testing and the exceptional likelihood a lot of players would do it, it does carry a suspension by default if proven. If they can prove this report, with the massive reaction in the Saints bounty investigation and the Pats' deflation investigation, it seems like it'd be pure hypocrisy if they don't go hard on this too.
It was officially "banned" in 2011, but wasn't tested for until 2014. I assume many players have and continue to use, and for good reason

Assuming Manning used HGH (anecdotal: dude looked awesome in '12 and '13 and then the wheels fell off late '14 when they started testing for HGH), if he is at all worried about his poker face and ability to lie in a press conference and not get called a liar or evasive - this may end his attempt to come back and play for Denver this year. No start, no press conference.

I honestly don't really care, but you do know that both the Colts and Broncos have organizational histories of "cheating", right?

How could you possibly blame anyone? This fanbase has had truckloads of shit dumped on them since September 2007, when anyone with an honest bone in their body knows BB is the best coach in football (and has been for years) and Tom Brady is one of the best quarterbacks of all time. Yet, despite those facts, fans from other teams, the NFL, and ESPN have done everything they can to diminish the value of what the Patriots have accomplished the last 15 years.

These guys are great for the game but because the Patriots create a lack of parity and thus $$$ lost for the NFL (because fanbases tune out when one team wins too much), they've dragged the Patriots and subsequently their fans through the mud for almost a decade now.

Fuck, the NFL's own Twitter handle has been trolling Patriots fans since February!

How could you possibly sit there and expect anything less? I hope Brady doesn't spend one second defending Manning, just as Manning didn't spend one second defending Brady during the DG bullshit. This is Grade A karma.

I mean, this has been such a great season so far.

1) Ravens miss the playoffs.
2) Colts will likely miss the playoffs.
3) Brady is having a borderline MVP season.
4) Patriots locked in for #1 or #2 seed.

Cherry: Manning outed for PED use.

Glory!

If this comes up on SNF and Rodney Harrison says something along the lines of, "I now have to question the legitimacy of Manning's comeback in the 2007 AFCCG", I will be his butler for life.

FWIW, 99% of my ire re: Deflategate was directed at the NFL, not the media. I expert the horrible American media to shamelessly hype any story across any genre in the name of ratings and page views. I did not expect the league to engage gleefully in a smear campaign as part of a bizarre attempt to settle scores from long ago.

In this case I fully expect the league to sweep this away as quickly as humanly possible.

manning categorically denies the allegations and the source of the article has recanted? If so, what's the story here? The NFL is a bunch of fucking hypocrites, but that doesn't mean they should shit their pants again looking to smear manning, does it?

I tend to believe it's a crock.

Not that I believe Manning (or any pro athlete) has been perfect during their careers, but because it just seems as though someone as prepared, calculating and detail-oriented in his on-field performance would go for the "send it to me under my wife's name" gambit. Manning would have a far more intricate way of concealing any misdeed.

I don't think you can place much into this guy 'recanting' what he said to Collins in secretly recorded conversations. It's not like he can claim he was pressured or coerced into lying here. He could claim he lied in an attempt to brag to Collins. But if he didn't supply athletes with PEDs for illicit purposes, why would he?

Yes, precisely. I would put more stock in the unwitting statements of a guy being recorded without his knowledge than his subsequent statements when he knew his audience, especially given the magnitude of this information becoming public.

Why? When he's being recorded without his knowledge, he could just be bullshitting to sound more big time than he is. His later statements could easily be trying to undo the lie.

He went on to say that, "Yes, I have been a patient under Dr. Guyer. I have had nutrient therapy, oxygen therapy and other treatments that are holistic in nature but never HGH. My wife (Ashley) has never provided any medication for me to take. Ashley and I never attended the clinic together after hours. There were times when I went in the morning and there were times when I went after practice so this thing about `after hours' is so misleading because it may have been 5:15 pm because their office closed at 5."

Sly told ESPN Saturday night that he recanted his story to Al Jazeera when he realized that they had used information he had "made up" to Liam Collins, a British hurdler and the undercover reporter who he says was trying to get into the supplementation business.

Sly told ESPN he was a student intern at The Guyer Institute in 2013 rather than 2011 as the Al Jazeera story alleges.

He told ESPN he was "testing" Al Jazeera's undercover reporter by dropping "names like Peyton Manning, Derek Jeter, Ryan Howard and James Harrison." He said none were clients, and while Manning, Howard and Harrison were all mentioned in Al Jazeera's HGH investigation, Jeter was not.

"When I realized Al Jazeera was using a secret taping and Collins as a so-called investigative reporter, I was baffled," he said. "I cannot believe that can happen. That's why I recanted the story. It wasn't true and I was trying to pull one over on Collins to see if he had any idea of what he was talking about."

"I was trying to determine whether this guy (Collins) was legitimate or just trying to steal some knowledge about the business," Sly said.

"The allegation that I would do something like that is complete garbage and is totally made up," Peyton Manning said of Al Jazeera's contention that he got HGH through his wife during his recovery from neck fusion surgeries in 2011. "It never happened." Dustin Bradford/Getty Images
He added, "When I realized Al Jazeera was using a secret taping and Collins as a so-called investigative reporter, I was baffled. I cannot believe that can happen. That's why I recanted the story. It wasn't true and I was trying to pull one over on Collins to see if he had any idea of what he was talking about."

Manning's agent echoed the quarterback's reaction in a statement issued Saturday night.

"The allegation reported by Al Jazeera naming Peyton is absolutely false and it recounts behavior and events that never occurred," Tom Condon said in the news release. "The implications suggested by Al Jazeera are outrageous and baseless: their source has already retracted his statements, as well as advised Al Jazeera those statements were meritless.

"Any further reporting of this matter is a retelling of falsehoods and fiction and complicity in the lack of journalistic ethics demonstrated by Al Jazeera."

Is there enough here for a probe into the Guyer Institute by the FBI? I'd love for Goodell and the league to try and sweep this under the rug while the Feds step in and say, "Not so fast, Roger".

On camera, Taylor Teagarden talks about getting and using HGH from Sly. That's the major smoking gun. Sly saying he knew he was being taped is pretty hilarious. Interesting that Al-Jazeera left out Derek Jeter (according to Sly).

Al-Jazeera has very good investigative reporting for those that don't read it.

Teagarden admits at 1:34:

His agent isn't denying that drugs were sent to his wife. So you must believe that she had a legitimate use, and this doctor happens to be bullshittig. I guess you could also believe that she didn't receive any PEDs, but they chose not to deny it and hid behind her privacy for some reason, but that move doesn't make much sense to me.

I think the "send it to me under my wife's name" gambit probably works 99% of the time. Laws prevent the public from knowing what medication she is taking and, in an extreme case, spouses cannot be forced to testify against each other. It took a perfect storm of a doctor with loose lips and an undercover athlete / reporter for this to come to light.

On another note, I also hate this sentiment of "I don't mind if he was using it to get back on the field". Where is the line, and who decides what continues moral PED use? Getting back on the field easily leads to using whenever you get banged up in a game, which easily leads to... In my opinion, you're either okay with PED use or you aren't - period. Personally, I'm fine with Peyton using, as most NFL players likely are, but not because it was done under the guise of recovery.

I could give two shits if any athlete uses PEDs. I love with unrestricted joy the fact that golden boy Peyton is getting tagged with this. I don't care if it's true or not, I'm going to really enjoy watching how this plays out. I cannot wait for the hypocrisy to be witnessed on ESPN Monday - PTI and Around the Horn should be fantastic viewing and I very much look forward to the memes and YouTube montages of the disparity between reactions.

Whether he - or any of the other guys named - did it or not is kind of beside the point. We had a $5M l, six month long investigation on fucking ball psi. Which was equated to PED use to justify a four game suspension. Now we have legitimate cause to look into actual PED use. It's going to be awesome watching the league try to get around this.

Edit: plus if any of them are still out there, it provides a nice end to the debate of who is GoAT.

If Elway and Kubiac were even remotely concerned about a QB controversy, they've to be pleased on some level this has come to light.

Edit: plus if any of them are still out there, it provides a nice end to the debate of who is GoAT.
So not only does Manning ride off into the sunset as a garbage QB, he also goes out with the stank of PEDs on him. That's karma Kramer.

Anyone who's response to this is "yeah, he probably took them but I don't care" or "I'm happy to see the golden boy get tarnished a bit" should be forced to go on a long car ride with the Dorito Dinks and Mark Brunel during which the only conversation topics are cool hunting stories and weight loss techniques. When an athelete of Mannings stature goes all in with a denial that is that absolute it's hard not to believe it. If he took the HGH, got caught and then came out and admitted it I doubt he loses any sponsorships. I think most people don't consider HGH to be the same as "steroids" and Manning has the kind of credibility that could easily turn this into a "guy who was so hurt that he shouldn't have kept playing but just went a little too far trying to hold on just a bit longer" kind of story. After the past year none of us should take any pleasure in this. That said, to me, the real story, if true is that one of the leagues best defensive player is in so much pain all the time that he needs illegal pain killers. One thing all of us can be absolutely certain of, however, is that the NFL will handle this poorly. At least we can count on that.
