Chris Carter would have been on this list, but he had a fall guy receiving his packages.

More seriously, the claim of mailing packages to Manning's wife smells bogus after that gambit "worked" so well for Roger & Deb Clemens

This is the best post anywhere I've seen on the Manning news. It hits the nail right on the head:

"I just got to chime in real quick on this Al Jazeera story about Peyton Manning using HGH. Listen I don’t care that Peyton cheated. I don’t care that his entire public persona is a fraud. I’m just curious to see whether the NFL and the national media attack him with the same vigor they attacked Tom Brady. Whether they suspend him for 4 games. Whether Chris Mortensen makes up lies and then refuses to retract them. Whether Mark Brunell cries on National TV about the integrity of the game. Whether Roger Goodell makes it his personal life mission to ruin his image. We all know the answer already though. They won’t. I know that. You know that. Everybody knows that. Because Peyton Manning is a media darling. He plays footsie with Christ Mortensen. He gives them what they want to hear.

And more importantly Peyton Manning is a loser. Nobody hates losers. They hate the guy who pillages their villages. They hate the guy they can’t beat. The guy who looks like a movie star. The guy who has it all. The guy who constantly hoists the Lombardi Trophy and spits in your eye. That’s why people hate Tom Brady. That’s why there are national investigations into who gives Tom [text] messages. That’s why people look for reasons to disparage Tom Brady and make excuses for Peyton. People hate the bully and weep for the guy who gets stuffed in lockers. The witchunt that is Deflategate has never been clearer than it is today."

I'm thrilled to see that ESPN gave Peyton Manning 30 minutes to explain his story and deny any wrong doing. I'm sure no double standards are going on there....

Did ESPN give Peyton Manning 30 minutes or did Peyton Manning give ESPN 30 minutes?

I'm sure Brady was lobbying to get on ESPN and they told him to go away.

God I hate defending the NFL or ESPN, but this is just so irrational at this point.

The very next session after that Peytonfest was with Brandon Marshall, who cracked a Deflategate joke.

Peyton was very convincing to me in that interview. I think this story is probably bullshit.

With that said, the media/NFL response will still be interesting to watch. The initial indignation from Tom Jackson and Mort and others already speaks volumes.

If the original claim is actually fabricated then why pick the names Sly did?
I feel like "Sly" is just protecting his reputation in the business and community. He'd get tarred and feathered out of Texas if he was the person responsible for ruining a football superhero's legacy. There's no way he doesn't see this and is acting accordingly.

This is the beginning of ACT 1 of a multi act drama. Manning launches a smear offensive on anyone near the story. The real fun begins when Al Jazeera drops some proof Manning can't refute. Al Jazeera, as I understand it, has journalistic integrity. I've found some of their reporting over the years to be more BBC than CNN. I doubt they relied on one source for this.

@KenTremendous:

I don't think Peyton took HGH. Don't care either way. Kind of hope he did, if it helped him recover. But don't care. (1/)

Thing is, by the ad hoc, random punishment system of Goodell, if it is more likely than not that Peyton knew someone ELSE took it... (2/)

Peyton should be suspended 4 games, the team should be fined and docked two high draft picks. Which is why Patriots fans are so angry. (3/)

What an amazing story!
- Proof positive that Al Jazeera has more journalistic integrity than ESPN
- At least the possibility that Peyton is even more of a late-career fraud than was previously thought
- And from this thread, evidence that there are still people who care what Chris Mortensen writes (or even, that he still breathes)

I think Manning deserves the benefit of the doubt, much as anyone would.

That being said, If there's one thing we should've learned from recent sports scandals (Bonds, Clemens, Armstrong, Braun, etc.) it's that the vehemence/"feel" of the denial is worth nothing. Either way.

After watching Manning's "interview", and comparing it to Brady's initial DFG press conference, you can see the difference that a carefully-crafted and coached media personna can make.

Manning masterfully handled the questions - deflecting or ignoring the ones that didn't drive his narrative, and hammering the same point multiple times.

This was then followed up with a panel of talking heads saying that they don't believe the allegations because of the kind of person that Manning is.

I am wondering is Al-J has the resources to do in-depth investigation, because the WWL is definitely not going to do one.

I never understood the love for Peyton with his potato in mouth speech sound and huge forehead. Usually, matinee idols are better looking/sound better. Maybe there was no other obvious candidate once Spygate happened?

From the admittedly little I know of Al Jazeera TV, I would imagine they thought long and hard about the Peyton aspect of this report. As juicy a story as it is, they have to have seen this reaction coming. For a network already handicapped in trying to go more mainstream in the states, it would be a pretty short sighted and reckless move not to have more solid backup on this angle.

I agree with pretty much everything here. This will be interesting to observe as it unfolds.

It was a friend's comment on Facebook. Does it matter? It's spot on.

Yes, it does matter. Copying and Pasting things you find on a friend's FB page, attributed or not, is not acceptable here. Moreover, a link is always required when posting a direct quote from credited media.

It was commentary from another fan. There's no news in what I posted. At all. It's 100% just an opinion piece, which is why I shared it, because I feel like people here may be able to relate to it. If it were from someone prominent in the media I would have included that.

Given the innocuous nature of posting an opinion I found on my feed, why the tongue lashing? It didn't make any factual claims whatsoever, it was just a thought about the topic.

Should be very easy to see if shipments were actually made to Manning's home. If they weren't, this goes away. If they were, he is about to get cooked.
How exactly? I think the opposite. The reason Peyton is coming out so strongly against this could be because he knows it's in the past and virtually impossible to prove, outside of surreptitiously recorded statements from a shady doctor.

We don't post FB feeds, rumor's from friends, non-attributed innuendo and other crap because it tickles our feelings or 'hits the nail" or any other BS like this. If you want to post about this BS and how one relates, ESPN boards or any other shit forum are the place. This is not the site for that.

He didn't present like it was on the NY Times. It was just an opinion blurb, and it didn't need attribution. I'm not understanding your issue. People say stuff like that all the time, all over this forum and this board.

This is a weird stand. This entire thread is commentary, innuendo, and opinions. So somebody posted an opinion that he liked and didn't claim it was his. How is that a problem? It's just another comment.

This entire thread is personal commentary, not FB quotes from friends who copied it from another place. Any further problem, take it to backwash. Thanks.

Not gonna believe Manning anymore than I would Al Jazeera at this point. It will be impossible to sweep this under the rug now. If there are FACTS to this accusation they will come out. AJ is a well respected news organization; far more credible than say ESPN or Fox News for example. I doubt they stick their name out there without some cross reference.

And yet their source for this (Sly) was an unpaid college intern at this clinic for 3 months in 2013. He claimed he was involved with supplying HGH. To Manning in 2011 in the undercover report.

In addition the sting reporter apparently has a history of fraud charges and convictions in the UK.

As these details come out, I think AJ needs to do some more to show their math on this report.

Why does Al Jazeera give a s**t about PED's? Just another smear article about the declining morals of America?

None of what you wrote is true. It's like the propoganda has already worked on you. The reporter does NOT have a history of fraud. Sly worked in the pharmacy there in 2011 and the reporter says they have confirmation of this. WATCH THE DOCUMENTARY.

How about the part where Taylor Teagarden is talking to Sly and Collins about how he takes D2? Or the other 10 people they have on camera talking and SUPPLYING all of this stuff. ON CAMERA. There is a TON of evidence, and not only is it on camera, Al Jazeera has it in their possession.

The Teagarden thing is the most compelling. I'm less interested in this being solely about Manning but getting an athlete admitting on camera (albeit unknowingly) gives the report a ton of credibility. While you might be able to convince me there's a reason for the supposed supplier to lie there's very little reason for an athlete to do so.

Did you watch the report? In the introduction they outline the fraud charges, it wasn't an unknown to them, it was actually a credibility inroad to the 'dark side' they sought to expose. The report did say they confirmed Sly was an internist at Guyer in 2011--doctor of pharmacology, not a hey you go get coffee intern--I don't know when or if that assertion was bunked or the timing of Sly's employment. Al Jazeera wasn't looking to burn Manning here, they were setting out to expose the system of doping and using an already dirty UK hurdler was the way in; it was loose lipped name dropping pharmacists that gave them more than expected.

I believe Spike is referring to he runner, Collins, who does have a history of fraud. Whether he counts as the reporter on this piece or just the agent of the reporter (who I think would be the narrator of the video), I wouldn't know.

Yes. I am talking about Collins with the fraud conviction. The Huffpo article points this out and links to his legal troubles. Whether or not that tarnishes his veracity in this thing is up to individual opinion.

Based on what others have described from the documentary, his veracity is irrelevant to the veracity of allegations/admissions regarding other players.
