Francona is still under contract through 2022 and considers Cleveland home (he grew up there and lives there). He'll either be back or retire.

I mean the six summers he spent at Cleveland Stadium when his dad played for the Indians.

At this point, you have to count on having someone fill in for Tito for extended periods though (I think it's 3 years running and had happened in the past). I wasn't a big fan Sandy Alomar's bullpen usage in 2020, but I think he's still the heir apparent in Cleveland, and I'd be okay with Tito calling it a career now because of the disruption of all his time off.

Tito is not leaving Cleveland, he enjoys it. There are no expectations and its laid back that is what he wants. Whoever goes out to San Diego will be expected to win immediately, Francona does not want to manage lofty expectations.

Bochy has talked about wanting to manage again, this feels like a slam dunk.

And from out of nowhere... St. Louis has fired Mike Shildt due to philosophical differences:

"All I can say is where we felt the team was going, we were struggling to get on the same page," Mozeliak said. "With him having one year remaining on his contract, we could have gone into 2022 having that over him, and we just decided that internally it would be best to separate now and take a fresh look as we head into a new season."
Curious move as the team came back from the dead with a late season 17 game winning streak to make the Wild Card Game only to lose to the Dodgers on a walk-off.

Not following the Cards closely, it's hard to tell what philosophical differences there may have been. The guy has been in the Cardinal organization since 2004 and made the post-season in each of his three full years at the helm. Seems like they must be changing team philosophies significantly if a guy who's been there for 18 years isn't on the same page any more.

He was the favorite from the start of the search, and is well-immersed in the culture of the organization, having worked his way up since being drafted by St. Louis in 2007.
WTF does that mean? (I vote "nothing," as its likely some post hoc rationalization disguised as insight). Shildt was in the organization since 2004.

Shildt got too big for his britches in the eyes of F.O. They are going to strict yes man model.
