the no. 1 overall draft pick in 2013 is expected to be in uniform on Sunday. What a world.

Why not? Seems like a non-zero chance he could see things from a new perspective in the Celtics system.

Bennett was the worst number one pick in any sport. Within a year he was contract ballast in the Wiggins/Love trade, where he ended up getting a bunch of DNP-CDs for the 16 win Timberwolves (and was waived in the offseason).

I know nothing about him, so have a question for the folks that do know something about him. He must have at least one or two basketball skills. He stats are underwhelming, but he does seem to be able to rebound some.

Perhaps he can make that his niche in the nba? Thoughts please.

Oddly, his nbadraft.net profile rates him a 95, same as Tatum got. Gives him highest marks for athleticism and potential. He's built like an NFL player. I wonder if that might have been part of the problem? Guys that size can easily develop conditioning issues. I also saw a clip where his effort left something to be desired -- he casually walked over to set a screen. Maybe if Brad goes to Portland, and looks deep into his eyes and shows him a possible future on the Island of Misfit Toys, it will be a sort of come to Jesus moment. One can hope.

The one fact about Anthony Bennett that I will never forget is when the Nylon Calculus published this chart concerning #1 overall picks and the odds of drafting a bust or better at a given draft position.

For a while, people thought the chart was wrong - how could someone be less than a bust? Well, that person is Anthony Bennett because a "Bust" = 0 VORP and Bennett's best year was negative.

Brad, for one, is interested in getting to look at him as a player: http://celticswire.usatoday.com/2017/12/28/brad-stevens-interested-former-no-1-draft-pick-anthony-bennett-boston-celtics/.

He's 6'8, 245 and he's only 24. If Brad can convince him that his path to the NBA is through defense, and he can use his athleticism to guard, say, 3 through 5, he could be a useful bench piece.

Go at 'em Brad!

Excerpt from a book regarding how the Cavs came to draft him #1 and a look at how quickly they came to regret it:

https://theathletic.com/135466/2017/10/24/the-blueprint-how-anthony-bennett-became-the-no-1-pick-of-the-2013-nba-draft/

“The issue with Anthony was, and we had no way of knowing it at the time, the kid had no desire to overcome adversity whatsoever. As soon as it was hard, he was out,” (David) Griffin said. “His whole life, he rolled out of bed bigger, better, and more talented than everybody else. As soon as it was hard, it was over.
Yikes. Hopefully people can change and the fact that he's still trying to play outside the NBA means something... but yikes.

Does he like signing balls for 8-year-olds? The Globetrotters would be a perfect fit.

I hope Brad goes and spends some time with him and sprinkles the pixie dust, but this is a bigger longshot than even most of Belichick's reclamation projects. He sounds closer to Darko - just doesn't care anywhere close to enough. He might actually like basketball, unlike Darko who was largely pushed into it, which is a good first building block, but hard work is a matter of temperament and it's rare to see anyone change theirs (though not unheard-of for a 24-year-old).

I think Jamarcus Russell was worse.

The problem with Bennett is he was a mid-first rounder drafted #1 overall. Look at all the mock drafts from the time. I'm not sure you can blame Bennett for the Cavs reaching so much (in a relatively shitty draft). They took the wrong lottery ticket #1.

I doubt anything comes of it, but I also wouldn't take the word of Griffin as gospel, he has a strong vested interest in the theory that everything is Bennett's fault and not in how the Cavs screwed up in developing him.

I think the biggest red flag would be when Bennett showed up to training camp 15lbs overweight and couldn't run up and down the court a few times without getting tired. What makes Bennett so amazing is that he flamed out during the era of advanced scouting practices, and that unlike guys like Sam Bowie or Greg Oden, who had injuries, or Michael Olowakandi or Darko, who underachieved but had legitimate NBA careers, he fell completely out of the league because he sucked and didn't give a shit. I think the Cavs were victimized by the fact they had the number one pick and felt compelled to hit a homerun, even if there were better, safer picks that made more sense.

It's a bad sign when you have the number one pick and when your selection is announced, every fan of every other team in the league is in their living room pumping their fists.

Is he actually in the Celtics system? I get the Red Claws are our affiliate, but we don't actually control all the players on the Red Claws. If he showed enough, couldn't any team sign him?

i believe that is correct. there was nothing in the announcement about his being on the Celtics roster. any team could sign him, but the Celtics have a closer look at him than anyone else.

Whether or not Griffin is spinning things post-hoc, the question of “what is this guy made of?” Is why Ainge loved the brain doc. Never clear to me if guy was a quack or not, but teams gotta have some attempt to assess that in their process.

Closer look plus the Red Claws use the C's "System" so they can see him doing their plays and the coach is a Celtics employee so he will use him exactly as the Celtics want him to be used.
