Marial is the son of Sudan native and former University of Dayton player Makur Shayok. Marial and two his brothers played college ball, but unfortunately none of them went to UD.
One of his brothers is named Shayok Shayok. Hard to beat that.

Caught

He's had a weird career so far, coming out of Ottawa, and playing three years at Virginia, then taking a year off, then doing a year at Iowa State where he was the leading scorer in the Big 12. Philly drafted him late in the 2019 draft and he played 4 games for them while assigned to Delaware. Then he went to play two years in the Turkish league before being waived by Philly in May of 2022 and signing a one-day contract with the Cs in October of 2022. (Not sure why he was signed and waived the same day?)

Now, of course, he's 27 and probably as good as he's going to get, but there are NBA rosters who could use him on their second units I think.
It’s not uncommon for teams to sign a player to immediate waive them so they can then use one of their 4 annual affiliate tags on the player and assign them to their G-League squad. Obv agreed upon by the player/agent prior to signing.

Thanks! I didn't know that. Makes sense.

Cultural hub of the universe
Nice piece on Celtics Blog about the C's and how they are using Maine to develop role players. Here's a snippet:

"Denzel and Luka are always pointing to their heads,” Glasheen said. “As former first-round picks, they understand it’s just as important to be dialed in mentally as it is physically. And that’s evident in their pregame preparation and just how they carry themselves altogether. Denzel obviously has more NBA games under his belt, so he’s super focused to return to that level. For Luka, there’s some motivation, being a former first-round pick as well, but he’s only 23. I think he’s really dedicated to improving his consistency on a night-to-night basis. And why has Maine been splendid for them? They both want to win. Kabengele - he wants to win. These guys are playing the right way. Maine has been a top offensive-rebounding team since the beginning of the year. That equates to hustle and no quit. And Maine ranks atop the league in assists and assist rate. They are all about making the right basketball play.”
