For those interested, Mad Dog is going to have Francona on in about 10 minutes, he's down in Ft. Myers. Said he's going to try and get Theo, Girardi, and Cashman on as well today.

Just to bump the thread, is anybody listening to this show anymore?? Is it any good? Nobody loves Dog more than me but I just can't justify shelling out the extra bucks to have his program. According to a guy who called Francesa the other day, Dog wouldn't someday, after his Sirius deal is up (or they collapse), rule out working again with Mike. Nothing is imminent, it's just something Imus asked him the other day on the Imus show and, apparently, that was his response.

Mike Francesa is on with Russo as we speak. Francesa also said at the end of his show today that he has a surprise at 1:00 tomorrow...i'm guessing Russo will return the favor. Russo turns 50 this weekend and they have had a lot of callers from his personal life on.

Holy shit. I wish XFM would just fucking go out of business already, and Russo would return to the Fan. Not necessarily with Mike, just to the Fan.

I like it. I listen every day. As before, they work hard to get guests. He does a decent job of setting up different topics over the course of 5 hours, and doesn't do a show all on the same topic. Some callers don't like this, but I think it works overall. Tries to keep the topics national in scope to minimize the NYC/tri-state bias. Malapropisms galore. Still goes berserk occassionally (he was melting down about Chip Caray last week, and has also gotten really wound up about the umpiring in the playoffs). Not quite as good as he was with Mike, but still the best out there in the afternoon.

Agreed. Radio not same without Dog, xm/sirius seems to be failure, no stats but just from this board no one seems to be listening even Howard threads have dried up. Granted they signed big contracts and will make their $ but no daily shit at work about them anymore.

Totally agree, this fucking blows.

It feels like when The Clash broke up and Joe Strummer went into hiding for for years and everyone was like 'where the hell did he go, we miss the dude.' Well, maybe not exactly like that. I just want Russo back.

I'm just pointing out that the programming is better.

Sirius has a three month trial - if you have an ipod or iphone - there's an app for that.

It's going to eventually be in every car sold, IMHO, and probably embedded somewhat in the price(like windows on a computer) although I listen to XM on my iTouch, on my computer, and in the car. And it's a beautiful that I can listen to it anywhere I can get an internet connection.

Satellite Radio isn't going away, it's so much better than terrestrial radio that it's not even close.

Agreed that it's not going away, they need to improve it, and figure out a way to make it as accessible as free radio IMHO.
I'm never tied down with my radio, and all I hear are statements like:
"Quick! I need to run out to my car(!) to hear this interview" or "I need to run into the office so I can stream this!"
That sounds like more of a pain in ass than not.

But not being tied down is already happening if you've got an iphone or itouch. And there will eventually be Apps for Blackberries and Pre's and everything else, IMHO. That conversion is happening as we speak. And Satellite Radio is very cheap at present and I HOPE they don't make free, because the commercials are why I stopped listening to sports talk on AM and anything on FM radio.

I'm a big Opie and Anthony fan and I listen to them whenever I can. When they were on 92.3, they would take a break every 23 minutes. ARRRGH. Now, they take a break about every hour. It is a huge difference and has made me more loyal to them and, by extension, satellite radio.

They also said people wouldn't pay for cable TV. Now it's common and you're odd if you don't have cable, but have a TV. I think the same will happen with Satellite because it works no matter where you are. Regular radio doesn't even come close!

I honestly agree with everything you're saying, and your example of cable is a good one. I dont have an iPhone or Blackberry, yet. I understand that it is becoming a necessity to have one (no matter what business yr in), and I need one, but thats a whole separate issue.
Maybe I just haven't made the leap yet, and am still in love with the talent I listen to everyday on my shit ass old-school fee radio.

Sirius is worth the clams if you have a commute..40 minutes for me. Listen to Howard in the A.M. and Mad Dog in the P.M. I live in Jersey and get the NFL on Sundays. Gil Santos for the Pats calls is worth every penny.

I signed up for the free trial so I could hear Chris today. I'll be streaming it live today at 2pm here: http://www.justin.tv/hulkhands2004

And I'll post a link afterward of the archived version. Should be fun.

Edit: Live now here on Justin tv: http://j-tv.me/9IaEum

I've had a lifetime XM subscription for 4 years now. Was extremely happy Mad Dog came aboard, and I've listened to him almost every day since. Today's show has been great so far, listening to a die-hard fan of a long suffering franchise try to express how he feels after finally winning a championship.

Nice open by Dog, I was expecting a little more hysterics but he kept it classy.

Edit: here's the temp link of the first hour: http://www.justin.tv/hulkhands2004/b/273050914

I was kinda shocked that there are commercials on Sat radio. I thought the whole point was you paid to skip the ads. What a rip off.... Joe Torre on now.

That's just for the music stations. The talk channels all have commercials unfortunately. At least the commercial breaks on the Mad Dog channel are really short, however (unlike ESPN, which has insanely long and numerous breaks).

CBS Radio blacking out their listeners overseas (thanks d-bags) means I don't listen to Mike very much anymore and I don't miss it. I get the podcasts and even when he's talking to a big name he's still the haughty Sports Pope with fuck-all knowledge. He needs Dog to keep him on his toes.

Thanks from those of us who don't subscribe to Sirius for posting the Mad Dog Giants monologue. But it occurs to me that I was a little disappointed in his reaction on the "day after." I expected more excitement and craziness in his spiel after such a long wait. In other words, more "Mad Dog-ness." I don't know, I just feel he was really measured in his tone rather than crazy and pumped up as he used to be. I think he and Mike needed each other more than they care to admit. Their give and take allowed them to feed off each other and made them who they are . Anyone else get the same feeling about Dog after hearing this monologue?

He was more charged up when the Sox came back from 0-3 than he was in those clips. Maybe he's just getting old.

I think in this case, he was more relieved than anything. A feeling along the lines of "FUCKING FINALLY, now I can breathe and actually enjoy baseball/myself/my life". I know I was after 2004. I was no where near as charged up as Mad Dog was after the Sox beat the Yanks. I was just serene and chill, and couldn't believe the relief I felt. I was on a high all through the World Series, and after the Sox won, although I was super-happy, I was just like Dog...FINALLY.

In the case of the 2004 Sox, I think Dog was so fired up for a few reasons:

1. He possibly hates the Yankees more than any other team
2. He got to rub it in Mike's fat face
3. He got to rub it in the faces of every Yankee fan
4. Working in NY, it was extra-special as he was surrounded by nothing but Yankee crap

you know Dog is loving it today. he made a huge stink when Girardi this week failed to appear on Mad dog Live after supposedly telling him he would. Girardi's agent wanted to get paid for the appearance and blamed negotiations with XMSirius to appear on another show regularly for $$ would conflict with the appearance on Dog's show. Dog was blasting the agent and Girardi. Classic stuff.

Edit: Dog's takeaway with Tito is that he thinks Tito may only ahve a couple eyars left as manager, quoting his feeling that its getting tougher to get through a eyar than it was before. Interesting, but perhaps not super surprising.

I'm driving a rental car with satellite radio and decided to check out "Mad Dog Radio" this morning.

The first thing I heard the host say was "the Red Sox offense is struggling, Crawford looks terrible, the offense is a problem for the Red Sox."

Sounds to me like Russo is still searching for competent hosts for his channel...

Mad Dog has been on for about 45 minutes and it's Manning bashing full time. Yeah the defense was lousy but its Mannings fault. He's an all time great but he's not an immortal. And he's annoyed because he bet the Broncos

Russo has bashed crunch-time Peyton since back when he was at Tennessee. It's one of his favorite recurring trash talk topics.

Chris had "old friend" Bobby Valentine on the show tonight just after 6:00. Valentine was so.... Weird. It was quite a combo.

Paraphrasing excerpts

"Bobby... Why take the Sacred Heart AD job?"

"Why not? The offer was presented to me... I can ride my bike to the school if I want... Why not?"

"Did you have the desire to manage a team again as January turned to February?"

"No. Why would I want to stand around and watch guys stretch and play long toss?"

Russo, obviously oblivious to Valentine's non-disparagement arrangement with the Sox: "Bobby... Terrible year last year... I mean awful... 69 wins... This the Boston Red Sox we're talkin' about for crying out loud... It must have been awful..."

"No it wasn't."

"What? Not terrible? I mean... Bobby... C'mon..."

"No. Not at all. You guys made it sound more terrible than it was. It wasn't bad at all. We were trying to get some guys off the disabled list, then we had the (Punto) trade, then we decided to not play. It was actually good. We accomplished some things. We sure weeded out the weak."

"You don't think it was bad?"

"Chris: I told you I was here to talk about Sacred Heart. YOU OBVIOUSLY DIDN'T HEAR THAT."

*Russo nervous laugh* "Bobby... C'mon... I gotta ask..."

"We'll, we have 31 varsity teams, 17 for the gals and 14 for the guys and a beautiful campus..."

Valentine was just so bizarre...

Love it when people pull the I'M HERE TO TALK ABOUT card as if people are more interested in hearing the least interesting part of their lives. You're right Monica Lewinsky, tell us more about your handbag business.
