Is there a way to get those few (maybe 20) pics that have already been sucked up into the Photo library out of there and into a folder of my choosing?
Does photos have an export option? You could export to a folder.

That worked, thanks. I "selected all" from within photos and then I exported them twice, once to my desktop and once to a new folder. Now I just need to make sure that when I insert the camera card that it doesn't automatically suck the pics up into Photos. I wonder if there's a way to disable it completely?

In the image capture app you can specify the default behavior when a camera card is detected

Well, I have it set now NOT to open photos when I put in this particular card, but I couldn't get it to open image capture. But, then i just exported all the photos to the file where I wanted. So I feel like I'm halfway to getting this. :)

ETA I am still only able to select one photo at a time for Facebook and gmail. I have to think that I'm just doing it wrong.

Ran across this and thought you (and possibly others with Mac/Android combo) might be interested: https://www.reddit.com/r/apple/comments/3ofdy3/got_an_android_phone_and_a_mac_beta_test_my/

As for the Photos thing, it's a bit weird having to jump through some hoops to set it up for your dropbox sync but that's mainly because out of the box it's setup to work with iCloud and sync across Apple devices for people who are all in on the Apple ecosystem. As weird as that might make things for people who aren't, it's pretty beneficial for Apple to make the interoperability easy to setup and the more features they can get that integrate across devices that are easy enough to setup for people to actually use them, the stickier their ecosystem gets.

If you hold the Cmd key down can you select multiple photos?

Yes. That worked. I'm not sure why I didn't figure it out but I think I'm at a place with this machine where I am convinced nothing is going to work and I wonder why I spent this kind of $...

Apple has a free ebook you can download from the iBooks store that might be helpful: MacBook Pro Essentials.

I will check it out. Thanks!

Ok so I have reached that place where I am now happier on the small macbook pro over the  larger, heavier, slower laptop. I am having one problem and that is that not all my dropbox files are syncing with the mac. For example, folders within folders are missing, and large groups of files are also awol, although they are on my desktop machine and on my on-line dropbox so they aren't full on missing, they just aren't populating my folders on my mac. Any ideas? I have updated the dropbox app on the machine but I can't seem to "force" a sync for those folders. I only realized it wasn't working when I shared a folder with a friend and THEN it downloaded to my mac. Do I have to faux share all the folders?I mean, I can do that but I have to think there's a better way?

I use dropbox for business by the way because I already pay for 2TB of storage, so using the puny cloud that comes with the apple products isn't really an option I want to pursue...

Thanks!

I'm not sure where it is on the Mac app but there's a selective sync option in the Windows app in preferences where you can tell it which files to sync.  Maybe that got turned on in the background somehow?

I've been looking for that, on the Mac side, but I am not finding it. I thought maybe it had to do with having a personal Dropbox and the Business dropbox but they are linked so it shouldn't matter, but I "shared" the folder of concern with myself and I'll see if that helps?

OK, edited to add that I was able to ensure that ALL the folders online are to be synced with this computer, but that still doesn't actually sync the folders (They were always synced) So now I am wondering if some of these files in some of these folders have file name issues. These are not files that change much (they are all knitting patterns, often PDFs if you must know) so maybe I will just load them all onto a jump drive and manually put them on this computer but that seems like an extra step I shouldn't have to take.
