Mirtle's work - but a great look at how recapture will affect both FLA/VAN depending on the year Luongo retires:

Wait, so how does this get decided? Can the Panthers just buy him out and totally fuck Vancouver in the last two years of the deal? That can't be right, can it?

Gilles isn't exactly covering himself in glory, but that would be ridiculous.

Does a cap recapture penalty really matter to a team that doesnt spend money?

A buyout would render the recapture moot for Vancouver. It's only if Luongo retires before his contract is up, in which case he could decide to fuck Vancouver over.

Granted, the ~$80m cap by then would mitigate most damage, but Gillis has set Vancouver up to pay $8.52m in cap penalties regardless of when Luongo retires- that is, if he does so before his contract is up.

So this means we can all like him now and fully appreciate his twitter right?
I have liked him since first reading his twitter account.

Good deal for Panthers. Luongo is overpaid but still a solid goalie and didn't seem to give up a whole lot. The Canucks got out of an albatross of a contract, for them. But makes the Schneider deal that much worse

Gotcha. I had them mixed up.

Still, I'd have to think it's well within the realm of possibility that he retires before his contract is up.

The Tim Thomas Fuck You Farewell Tour has begun...

Edit: Just saw the video of Thomas having a hearty laugh over it. Good stuff.
