Watching the soccer talk after the Manchester City last season retrospective. How many American sports analysts even know of Kipling?

That's gonna kill his $14M move to Sunderland. I know this because Arlo White has told me so, about 55 times in the first 15 minutes of the match.

No, it was mostly the Roma keeper and the endless player valuations chatter of the PBP guy.

I now know what every single player who played tonight cost. Which is...nice?

What kind of man lets his 10-year-old cousin get shitfaced in public?

Liverpool are fifth favourites to win the BPL on oddschecker. Not one of the listed bookies has them 4th, least not when i checked last night.

Best atmosphere was under the bleachers at halftime.

Yeah this was definitely the highlight for me

Also, was I hearing things or did they play a slightly different YNWA before kickoff than the one at Anfield?

I've only started following LFC since Henry bought the team. And I know almost nothing about the game. So I didn't really know what to expect, but this was a lot of fun.

The crowd was very lively and boisterous (compared to a normal regular season game baseball game at Fenway) I'm sure it would be ten times more so at Anfield. That must be bananas to see.

From afar, the crowd singing and chanting seems very foreign and maybe kitschy to me, but in person I think I finally "got it". (Though felt a bit awkward as I wanted to join in but knew known of the words...)

I only caught the tail end of the halftime bleacher festivities... (I'd headed to the team store in search of a Sterling shirt, but could only find Sturridge, Gerrard, and Coutinho. By the way, I thought the merch was pretty ugly in general. I think the nicest thing was probably the "you'll never walk alone" scarf. Everything else was rubbish.) So I saw about the last 3-4 minutes of the crowd singing and chanting, and jumping on the picnic tables. Were any of you part of that? I think there was one poor Fenway security guy trying to break it up.

As for the game itself, it was a snoozer I thought. Not a whole lot of action. I couldn't believe how small and how fast Coutinho was. He seemed to be everywhere on the pitch... and always around the ball. I thought Emre Can looked pretty decent when he came on - he seemed pretty big and quick, and played with some meanness (One of the more heated parts of the game was when one of the Roma guys took him down pretty hard, looked like Can wanted to rip his head off) I think he'll be a good addition once he learns the system.

Was Roma's goal about as flukey as they come, or does this happen often in professional soccer? Essentially it was a corner that that was deflected, went through Agger's legs, and then trickled pass Jones.

Oh... and I get why Ashley Cole was widely booed when he was announced. But there was one guy on Roma who got a huge cheer from the crowd, both Roma and LFC supporters, when he was announced. Who was that, and why the big cheer?

I didn't see the beginning of the game, but I'd imagine it was Totti.  He's pretty much a legend in Italian and international soccer, and a name that supporters of both sides would know well.

Probably Francesco Totti, one of the most legendary players still active. He, like Gerrard, is a one club man; he has never played in any other shirt than a Roma shirt.

He is considered to be one of the greatest players of his generation,[3] and also as Roma's greatest player ever.[4] He holds the record for having won 11 Oscar del calcio AIC, including five Italian Footballer of the Year awards, two Serie A Footballer of the Year awards, two Serie A goal of the year awards, one Serie A Goalscorer of the Year award and one Serie A Young Footballer of the Year award.
2006 World Cup winner and Euro 2000 finalist, Totti was selected in the All-Star team for both tournaments. He has won many individual awards but the most important ones are the Golden Shoe[5] and the Golden Foot.[6] He was named in the FIFA 100, a list of the 125 greatest living footballers selected by Pelé as a part of FIFA's centenary celebrations.[7]In 2011, Totti has been recognized by IFFHS as the most popular footballer in Europe.[8]

Thanks, fellas. Was definitely Totti. Probably similar to the reception someone like Jeter might get anywhere other than Fenway. I just wasn't sure if there was something more to it than that - a former Liverpool player perhaps.

I'm sure. Just couldn't think of another US player that would make sense. Larry Bird, maybe? Barry Sanders? Is there no equivalent?

I think it's officially gone down as an Agger own goal, which seems a bit harsh. Borriello looked to deflect his leg somewhat. Either way, it's usually pretty flukey, but not with this Liverpool back line. Skrtel broke the EPL own goals record last season.

Bridget Moynahan would disagree.

Maybe in 2003. Not in 2014.

I don't think the 2007 missed drug test tarnished Totti's reputation all that much, but it isn't a pristine resume. And having a child with woman you're not married to and then supporting that child, publicly, for more than a decade does a lot to mitigate whatever reputation damage happened back then.

One club players who won team championships, won individual awards, had mostly clean off-field reputations, are revered by their fans and are devastatingly handsome. Describes Totti. Describes Brady. Even describes Jeter and Rivera.

Doesn't describe Gerrard though. He's got more of a "hit in the face with a shovel" look about him. ;-)

SF121 thinks Mariano Rivera is devastatingly handsome?

Then again, he is a big fan of the Barbados Tridents, so we knew his judgment was suspect.

There's no sneaking it past you, smart guy. I was deliberately exaggerating for effect and engaging in internet shenanigans.

I will now put on the cone of shame and think about what I've done.
