Yesterday Mo was going to take 3-4 weeks to recover. Today I woke up to “it’s more severe than originally thought” and it going to take “21-28 days.”

I am a bit confused.

That’s based on a preliminary X-ray - they will have a better assessment when they get him back to Liverpool and can do an in-depth examination - MRIs etc - it’s also agent speak

Jurgen Klopp says he told Liverpool in November of his intention to depart at the end of this season and that his announcement to quit the club has come now to provide clarity and an orderly transition.

“I can understand that it’s a shock for a lot of people in this moment, when you hear it for the first time, but obviously I can explain it – or at least try to explain it," Klopp said.
“I love absolutely everything about this club, I love everything about the city, I love everything about our supporters, I love the team, I love the staff. I love everything. But that I still take this decision shows you that I am convinced it is the one I have to take.

“It is that I am, how can I say it, running out of energy. I have no problem now, obviously, I knew it already for longer that I will have to announce it at one point, but I am absolutely fine now. I know that I cannot do the job again and again and again and again.
“After the years we had together and after all the time we spent together and after all the things we went through together, the respect grew for you, the love grew for you and the least I owe you is the truth – and that is the truth.”

Assistant managers Pepijn Lijnders and Peter Krawietz, as well as elite development coach Vitor Matos, will also leave their positions at the end of the season, with Lijnders keen to pursue his own career in management.

Well this is unexpected bad news. It seemed he was reinvigorated with Liverpool 2.0 but I guess this is his normal progression. Can they beat Bayern to Xabi?

This is going to take some time to process. He told FSG in November - presumably to give them time for succession planning which makes sense - FSG could hardly be reaching out to prospective candidates without a public announcement. But how does it affect the team for the rest of the year with a lame duck manager?

This is Klopp and they’re in the thick of it for 4 trophies. I think energy will stay high. Everyone is going to want to end this season on a high note.

I’m less sure what this means for new contracts - Salah, Trent, and VVD - and transfer business. Everything will be on pause until a new manager is appointed.

The Guardian relays that Xabi Alonso has a summer buy out clause for 3 clubs: Bayern, Madrid, and Liverpool. We know Madrid is not an option now, but Bayern always lurks…

I’m predicting that Klopp is going to take some time to recharge from June through December and then sign on to be the next Chicago Fire manager. It all makes sense now - the Fire are running is back with Klopas for a year to keep the seat warm for Klopp. Easy transition!

Or he takes the German National Team gig next time it comes up.

I think a year off and then Barcelona might be Klopp's most likely destination. He is only 56 and that seems a little early for the semi-retirement of international football. I can't see him going to another PL side, can't see him at PSG or Bayern, and Italian football doesn't suit his personality. Just from a club culture standpoint Barcelona feels like a better fit than Madrid, but I think he'd only go there if he believed they'd gotten their house in order in terms of the football and business operation above the manager.

If the next Liverpool manager doesn't work out I wouldn't rule out a return in a couple years.

Much respect from a rival across the park.

I can see where it’s time. His core is aging out, or on the cusp of it, there are some very good pieces he’s picked up in the past few years, but they’re not THAT good, and he’s got a shot at the league and multiple trophies besides but that has as much to do with the flaws of his rivals. Just have to read this thread to see the holes in this squad. This season might be his best management job ever-a little smoke and mirrors.

with doubts about FSG and money from petrol clubs (of whatever league) driving up prices and screwing up acquisition strategies, I could see it. He’s had a run with a generational group of players. They don’t get knit into such a great squad without him but he knows he’s likely not going to see their like again even if he stays another 20 years.

Six months off and then he takes the Germany job before ‘26, it says here.

I agree.

Anfield will show him the love that’s for sure.

The thing that makes me think Barca might work is he seems to really relish his rivalry with Ancellotti.

Klopp says when he told the players the reaction from them was "Top" he has a very strong bond with the players and thus far they (the players) didn't ask him any questions.

He knows he can do a very good job now, but he can't say the same for the future, hence his decision.

Klopp says he will not be advising as to who will be next manager.

And Madrid!

Also, I'd love for "I know that I cannot do the job again and again and again and again" to get the meme template treatment.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp on whether he was as energised as he said at the start of the season:
"The reason for that was, the summer was a difficult summer, we didn't have a lot of time to put the legs on the table, we were working hard to bring players in.

"It's not about that, in this moment of each minute, it's just the stuff what you have to do next, it's a lot like planning, you might think the transfer window is where things don't happen, so the work around planning, pre-season they need to be spot on because it's important.

"I've done it so often, I have no problem with you I can't wait to not do it any more, you have to be the best version of yourself especially for a club like Liverpool.
"I can't do it on three wheels, I don't want to be a passenger. My manager skills is based on energy and relationships.

"I am who I am and where I am because of how I am. I cannot be that anymore. I didn't say it after one two three year four five, I didn't say it.
"I was 100% convinced at that moment we will go to 2026. My energy level was endless but now it's not. Now we have to change."

Watching the Leverkeusen game now on ESPN+. Xabi’s team play looks very familiar and would be a smooth transition. i can’t believe I’m watching manager transfer targets this window.

My wife has a huge crush on Klopp, so we’ve both had a rooting interest in Liverpool the past 9 years.

The Mrs saw an article with a Xabi Alonso pic and, let’s just say she has joined the chorus calling for FSG to hire the club legend.

My wife’s Klopp crush is purely professional. Her interest in Xabi doesn’t seem to be.

What Xabi has done with that team is nothing short of amazing. They’re gonna win the Bundesliga this year. They were near the bottom of the table when he took over, and they almost instantly transformed into a team to be feared.

I know it’s inevitable that he’s going to leave Leverkusen (a team I could take or leave myself), but it sucks for the sport.

A smattering of updates...

VVD says he's going to wait to see who the new manager and coaching team are before picking up contract negotiations. This makes good sense for him and Salah, and the club was likely to focus on those this summer anyway. Trent is in a slightly different position since he's younger and much more likely to attract mega-club suitors if he gets into the summer without a new deal. It's a delicate dance all around.

Rùben Amorim form Sporting is getting some mentions as a possible Klopp replacement. He's got Sporting on a great run for sure and apparently has a €20m buy out clause. Xabi also has a reported buy out clause for 3 clubs only - Liverpool, Madrid, and Bayern. Hopefully the Liverpool brass have already been working behind the scenes for their top options because with 2 mega-club jobs already slated to be open (Pool & Barca), ManU looking likely, Chelsea always a possibility, and Tuchel always a press conference away from torching his bosses...a number of big jobs could open up this summer creating a mad scramble.

Calvin Ramsey to Bolton on loan for the remainder. Bradley has grabbed his opportunity with both hands.

It's interesting all the focus is on managers when the club is saying Football Director is the first vacancy they will fill. I'm not really as familiar with the amount of control big-time managers really wield. Would they pick a Sporting Director and let them have a prominent say in the next manager? Or does a manager of a certain status get to have a say in the role? Are Amorim or Xabi big enough to have any say at all? Maybe the NFL is skewing my brain after the Belichick drama.

Some names bandied about include Sam Jewell from Brighton, Richard Hughes from Bournemouth and Lee Dykes from Brentford. Of course, the press is also pushing out that Michael Edwards could return now rumor (which would seemingly suggest that he and Klopp were the issue, not ownership). Not sure I believe the Edwards part but I would welcome that stability right now.

The Athletic reporting that Gordon did reach out to Edwards this past weekend, but Edwards declined. So it’s on to the new…

Conor Bradley’s father passed away today. If there’s any solace in it, hopefully he saw Conor turn in a MOTM performance mid-week.

Not much useful to talk about that- just a cursed display after looking spectacular against a pathetic Chelsea side. When Alisson has two schoolboy gaffes in a game it’s never going to be your day. Whatever, he’s still the best in the world and was d a stinker- may as well have his when the rest of the team does.

Going down the team sheet you don’t find many guys that had good days. Some credit goes to Arsenal, their first half setup and press was fantastic. On the other hand, the guys just didn’t have it. Trent looked terrible and Gomez on a card became a better option (Gomez might have had the Liverpool MOTM performance, to be fair). Gravenberch didn’t even exist. Jota and Gakpo disappeared without service. Just yuck.

Other than a potential magical moment, I don’t think Salah materially affects the result today.

Konate looked hurt. Hell, I hope he was. If he was healthy that doesnt bode well.

I don’t know how you classify Darwin. His chaotic contributions are reflected by a lot of the advanced metrics now used, but his weaknesses are more difficult. In the span of 15 minutes, he blunted a Harvey Elliott run by going offside, forcing the kid to turn back and reset. He blasted an ill-advised near post shot that hasn’t landed yet when he had two better passing options. He was then actually caught offside. He got a card for a bad reaction to a bad call (with the incredible consistency that only Anthony Taylor can manage in a match with constant remonstrations from Odegaard and then unpunished contact by Haevertz). He was a total anchor and detriment to his side today.

Analyze, learn, move on. City back in the driver’s seat.

To be fair the Trossard goal was deflected just enough to put it between Allison’s legs.

Other than that a good summary .. they played like shite and didn’t deserve a result. Even that being said, the game was there to be won until the VVD/Allison fuck up.

Not sure what was up with Konate - he’s been brilliant the past few games. Maybe just fatigue - Klopp has liked to rotate him when he could. Maybe an enforced week off will help.

Didn’t see the deflection, you’re right.

Now, watching VVD loaf back looks even worse. If he even hit second gear he would have been there in time to close Trossard down entirely. Too lackadaisical.

As an Arsenal supporter.. thought Anthony Taylor was incredibly inconsistent for the entire game. There was a lot of contact both ways and what was a card (or a foul) and what wasn't was anybody's guess. Tough match for Liverpool.. a little luck and the result could have gone the other way. The attack without Salah looked a bit toothless though... Nunez is confusing, as you said. I saw him coming on the pitch and was slightly worried about him going against tired defenders and a number who were on a yellow. Tough away loss for you guys, but thought the team played pretty well generally... and you never expect Alisson or VVD to gift that second goal.. was an incredibly awkward ball that landed in the absolute worst spot for a goalie and defender. If Arsenal don't win the title would like to see Liverpool pull it off... pretty great managing by Klopp to get this team to the top of the table.

A stinker all around. It happens. Burnley next Saturday and at Brentford 7 days later. Hopefully, they use that time to get their heads right and maybe Mo back.

Arteta planned a good match. Martinelli playing so side constantly forced Trent into choices he didn’t want to make. That seemed to mess with both Trent and Konate’s decision making.

Arsenal also kept finding ways to overload spaces in the midfield and Liverpool couldn’t make them pay for it. And the Gunners’ first half press was executed to perfection.

The video from this match should give the coaching staff a ton of material to work with.

Alison aggravated his hamstring strain, a further assessment will come over the weekend.

On the upside, Salah got in a full practice and might make the squad for Brentford.
