This is the last game of the season for flamengo and they're playing a high press the entire game. You know, maybe, just maybe, the cramps may be real...
Flamengo have played their asses off. Now Liverpool have 5 days to recover for a trip to 2nd place Leicester City...

No card for Filipe Luis there? alrighty

This guy is falling for every single dive, no reason for Flamengo to stop

These officials have broken new ground for things I never seen on a pitch. With 15 more minute to work with, what else is possible?

What the hell are you seeing in this game?
A team organized around deceiving a referee, committing dirty fouls, and getting in their opponents’ heads. Mane and Salah’s yellows are perfect encapsulations of this. I hate that shit. This should be an exhibition of football talent, not theatrics and black psychology.

Honestly, the tactics don't bother me nearly as much as the fact they assigned a ref totally in over his head to this game for no reason other than politics.

What you saw was a team that dominated possession for large parts of the game, only to lose on a counter attack when they were already spent physically.

I'm not even a Flamengo suporter, but the level of prejudice in this thread is off the charts.

I can’t stand Atletico, either. I hated Chelsea when they encapsulated this. Man City spare the theatrics to this extent, but they’re into the mind games. It is in Europe, but not to this extent. It should be stamped out, plain and simple.

Say what you want about this competition, but one of the most frustrating Liverpool games I've ever watched was the 2005 final against Sao Paulo. Liverpool absolutely dominated, corners were something like 20-0 Liverpool, 3 goals were chalked off for offside, and Sao Paulo scored on their one chance on a counter to win 1-0. So I'm happy they've finally won this trophy 14 years later.

Seeing the FIFA champions patch on the shirt will be fun, too.

Really hope Chamberlain isn't out a significant period - assuming they'll go with Milner at one of the fullback positions at Leicester alongside Gomez / Van Dijk.

The other 6 outfield positions... anyone's guess.

i think with the stress of watching the final removed, a rewatch will reveal that was an excellent final. Both teams had strong moments and played hard for the 120. Liverpool consistently has a little more during the match.

Salah with the Golden Ball? Playing to the hosts just a bit?

Given Firmino scored the winning goal in both games and all...

Well, I guess this is one advantage of playing the 3rd place and final games back to back in the same stadium. Can give out all 3 sets of medals at once.

Wasn’t able to watch the game, but am thrilled with the result. Double-special for me, as I’m a Liverpool and Fluminese fan. Visceral dislike of all things Flamengo.

It's on FS2 in about 45 minutes if you want to watch or DVR it. Just add some extra time to the end of the recording.

Just watched the extended highlights. The xG numbers for that game must be yuuuge, especially relative to the final score. Just a ton of high-percentage flubbed chances.

Also, I hope this game nets Everton Ribeiro an acquisition offer by his namesake.

I thought Liverpool’s best player today was Henderson.
Yeah, I think so as well. Was just looking across both games. I give Hendo credit for stepping in when the team was short in the back against Monterrey, but I think he'd agree it wasn't a great performance.

Henderson did the midfield work of all three players. Ox, even before his injury, was pretty much useless. Keita had some moments and tracked back better than expected, but the center of the park was awful for Liverpool on the day.

As we all stated upthread, their success hinges on Fabinho. He can’t recover quickly enough. The injury to Wjinaldum compounded this severely as he’s true pivot between attack and defense. Those injuries expose the weaknesses. Fabinho does the work of two CDMs, while Gini flexes
beautifully between attack and defense.

A) It’s the Liverpool thread
B) Is this the first time you’ve encountered Liverpool fans?

Matip is due back any day now. Wijnaldum trained yesterday, so hopefully he can get into the holiday scrum. Fabinho is another month out. Don’t see a timeframe on Lovren still.

The modern game is brutal.

Was actually really impressed with Flamengo .. they were excellent with their counter pressing and generally pretty successful breaking up counter attacks. No idea if the cramping was real .. I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt on that. The “dark arts” however .. Robertson was singularly not impressed for one on that ref con job with Mane’s yellow.

And the less said about the ref the better . He was comically awful. I gather he was a political choice. This better not be a precursor of what promises to be a contentious WC.

The CWC might have kind of flown under the radar of most fans and the English press .. but the team sure as hell cared ..

Really good to see Gomez seems to have rounded into form again .. Matip may not get his job back.

Someone is going to have to make a compelling case and give me hard evidence that shows they are better off with Lovren and not Gomez starting next to VVD.

The midfield injuries are piling up though. Midfielders are the footballing equivalent of “there’s no such thing as too much starting pitching.”

I think Klopp prefers Matip with VVD because Matip is the best ball playing CB of the bunch (as well as being defensively solid). Several times a game, Matip will spray a long diagonal pass or push the ball into a pocket of space in the midfield, things Gomez and Lovren don’t do.

But yeah, Gomez over Lovren for sure. The complication being that Gomez is also the back up RB, so he sometimes gets held back from CB to rotate in for TAA.
