Tough couple weeks ahead for Liverpool. This is crunch time. They’re 7 points clear of 5th place, but Chelsea has a game in hand.

This weekend they head to Selhurst Park with Can, Robertson, and Gomez all having picked up injuries over the break. Maybe Clyne is ready to come back?

Mid-week its City coming to Anfield for the CL Quarters, a Saturday trip to Goodison for the Derby, and then the away leg on Tuesday. Liverpool host Bournemouth the following weekend to round things out.

Buckle up. Should be a wild ride.

Klopp's presser today:

- Clyne fully fit and in the squad
- Can misses Palace game
- Gomez out 3-4 weeks
- Can contract talks ongoing

So .. I'm expecting Clyne gets the start against Palace. I don't think you want TAA to play four games in fifteen days. Plus, they have to find out if Clyne can be a viable option for the run in. If he plays well against Palace then you could use him against Everton - or in the return leg at Citeh.

Still expecting Can to leave. All along I've thought his primary motivation is to be first choice selection - something I doubt Klopp can guarantee.

IMO, that´s his third motivation...1) He wants big money. 2) He wants to be on a CL club. 3) He wants to play a lot.
If he´s on a team like Liverpool, he will play a lot of (important) matches. And he would get enough breaks to stay in shape for possible tournaments in the summer. There aren´t many teams that can offer a situation like Liverpool.

The playing time issue is going to get a lot worse if he stays and Keita arrives and they bring in a full time DM (which seems likely).

In that scenario he's batting Henderson who (when healthy) is probably a better player. Not to mention Oxlade Chamberlain and Adam Lallana. If they add another attacking mid as well (which also seems likely) he'll be left playing in FA and League cup games.

On the other hand the rumoured suitors - Juventus , Bayern and City?? - have equally crowded mid fields.

I think his main problem is that his self evaluation doesn't match reality.

Last year he was quoted as saying he wanted to play the DM role because he preferred it and it meant less flare ups of his chronic calf condition. Clearly Klopp rates Henderson over Can in that role. So if Juve is telling Can he is their Khedira, then there’s really no competition.

If that's the case then the mystery is why hasn't he already signed? Maybe they are offering the playing time but not the salary he clearly seems to want?

I’d guess the same. On a free, the players want bigger salaries and the agents still want a sizable cut. Doesn’t surprise me that a deal could take a while.

Best of luck to Can wherever he lands. It’s too bad it didn’t work out better, but it’s been pretty good. He came in for £11m and his play has been worth that several times over.

With Klavan and Gomez out as well for tomorrow... the Reds only have Lovren and Virgil as healthy Center Backs.

Does Klopp hope that Clyne or Moreno (or TTA/Robertson) can play centrally in case of more injury or does he dip down into the U-23s for someone? And who is that someone? Conor Masterson?

If I recall correctly, Robertson has played centrally for the Scottish team....or at least I've read that somewhere. 3 in the back again with Lovren, Virgil, and Robertson in a pinch?

Why not Robertson, van Dijk, Lovren, TAA ?
Have Moreno and Milner as options on the bench. There isn´t much more.

My question was with regards to a potential injury to Virgil/Lovren. Who plays centrally then?

I too expect that those two will start centrally with TAA and Robbo on the flanks.

So this will now become the Salah watch thread.

That was a fun first half and a tense second half. Nobody to blame but themselves if they can’t get into the semifinals now.

Is this team fun or what? My buddy was sitting in the Kop end and was sending my pictures before the start, that atmosphere sent chills.

No way Salah doesn’t play even if he’s not at 100%. I wouldn’t even be surprised if he gets 45 min on Saturday against Everton.

Well this sucks .. The Mirror is reporting Can has had a relapse and may be done for the year ..

https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/liverpools-emre-can-miss-rest-12311699

That leaves the midfield as Milner/The Ox/Wijnaldum vs. City

Thank god Milner has been playing well .. can he play DM ?

And it may be the end of Can's Liverpool career.

Edit: I wonder if they can recall Grujic from his loan?
As long as it's only the Mirror reporting, I'm not worried. No other sources on this.

In Klopp’s presser today he indicated Can was out for Everton and very doubtful for City.

The tea leaves would say he wasn’t healing as fast as originally hoped. No discussion on done for the year fortunately.

So Milner/Wijnaldum/Ox vs. De Bruyne/Silva/Fernandinho

Gulp ..

I’m an Everton fan and I’m telling you it would be batshit insane to even name Salah to the squad on Saturday.

That first half was the most impressive I’ve seen in a long time. City is the best team in the PL in several years and maybe the best in the world ATM and Liverpool made them look foolish. LFC has lightning in a bottle.

Go for Europe, man. Barca Bayern Real blah blah blah. Go grab that shit.

For a 5-1 game that was extraordinarily nerve wracking. Pool played like total shite in the first half. Couldn't win any 50/50 balls. Give away after give away. If they had shipped four goals it wouldn't have been surprising. But, given all that, the defence played great .. outside of VVD's gaffe after the missed foul they really didn't give City much of sniff. Huge break on the offside call .. but it would have been a very lucky goal if allowed.

I thought they played much better after the break and the game was much more even. Obviously Salah's goal (#39 in 44 games !!!!) put the game away.

My take away on the tie is mostly about how well they defended. VVD and Karius have made a huge difference. So much so I doubt they bring in a senior keeper or another CB.

I would love Liverpool to draw Roma. It would bring back memories from my youth, 1984 E.C Cup Final. Liverpool won on penalties....

Also, to get to the final, Roma had to beat my old team Dundee Utd in the semis, I was on S forms with Dundee Utd. The Roma president tried to bribe the ref...although to this day, many believe the the bribe was taken. Italian corruption for you.

That looks like the place to be. Thanks very much

That was ridiculously fun environment. Got ther 20 mins before the game andhad40 people in line ahead of me. SRO and place was so tense after Jesus scored. When Salah scores the roof blew off the bar. Singing and shouting. So much fun. Thx again for the recommendation. I may do it again in a couple weeks

Because they can’t seem to get themselves out of this European competition, team rotation will be key down the stretch.

‘Pool need 9 points to secure a top-4 finish. The schedule looks favorable: Bournemouth, at West Brom, Stoke, at Chelsea, and wrapping up with Brighton. But everyone has to stay healthy and focused to see this through because Chelsea have a reasonable path, too: at Southampton, at Burnley, at Swansea, Liverpool, Huddersfield, and at Newcastle.

Somehow, Kane got credit for Eriksen's goal where Kane didn't appear to get a touch - love Salah's immediate tweet after:

Glad you enjoyed it. I haven't been since 2015, but it's a good place to catch a game.

Two things not noted.

1) Chelsea also has to deal with the FA Cup, which gives them similar fixture congestion as Pool.
2) Given their current status and their recent play, they may well focus on winning the FA Cup rather than trying to win all 6 league games and hoping Pool and Spurs don't win 3.

Can't complain about drawing Roma - should be a great tie

Leg 1 is Tuesday, April 24 at Anfield
Leg 2 is Wednesday, May 2 at Stadio Olimpico
