A Lost Time
I heard on the broadcast that they had 10 matches in January and only 3 scheduled for February.

So I don't know which played a bigger part for the bad stretch, Mane's loss or the brutal schedule.

I thought they played really well .. if lacking a little finesse in the final ball. Chelsea really didn't get much of a look at Mignolet the whole game .. maybe that one chance by Pedro. The Costa penalty was pretty marginal complete with a Costa dive but still couldn't complain too much. Terrific save from Migs. Speaking of which he .. and the rest of the team were caught sleeping by Sideshow Bob's free kick .. Mignolet wasn't even looking at him when the ball was struck. That being said it was a perfect strike .. up and over the wall and into the top corner off the post. No keeper gets that. Matip was awful.

And Sakho indeed heads to Palace on a rest-of-season loan. The Echo reports that Palace will pay a £2m fee and pick up full wages. Can't complain about that given Sakho's exile the past 6 months. If he plays well for Big Sam, 'Pool should be able to move Sakho this summer.

Agreed that it's a bad look that it caught him by surprise but also that nobody was getting to it. That said, nobody was looking. Clearly, Clat stopped things to set the wall's distance, but I saw no visual indication (there should be one in addition to the whistle) that play should have resumed.

The press calling it a howler is muck stirring of the highest order.

Which brings up the question .. what is the referee's criteria for deciding when to blow the whistle on these kinds of free kicks? He has to set spot for the kick and the wall's distance. Beyond that why does the ref blow the whistle when he does?

After a free kick is given, the takers can ask for the wall's distance to be set. The referee will blow the whistle, preventing the ball from being played. Once the wall is set and he's satisfied that all criteria for proceeding are met, he's supposed to resume with another whistle.

I see the request, the first whistle blow and indication that he's stopping his watch, and he returns to his ready position. He should make a visual signal he's going to his watch to augment the whistle blast. I don't see the last sequence, but I see reactions from the Liverpool players that suggest they didn't get the indication, either.

I guess what I'm asking is what the "he's satisfied that all criteria for proceeding are met" actually means?

The team taking the kick needs to request the 10 yards- that's when the whistle will blow 100% of the time. Not really a wink wink rule.

Tactically, a player will stand at the spot of the foul to force their opponents to ask for the 10. That allows a team to organize defensively without any danger while the ref sorts out the wall.

Really nice game from Lucas today, and it's great to have Mane back in the side.

It was very encouraging to see them basically shut down Spurs in the second half while holding the lead. They kept up the effort in closing down and pressing the opponent, but played a more conservative attacking half and didn't give up any good chances at the other end.

It's nice to have the Fab 4 healthy and rested. It was a fantastic performance today, even by Lucas.

The schedule ahead looks favorable. Only 2 more top-6 sides: Arsenal on March 4 & Man City on March 19. Overall it's 7 home, 6 away, and one busy week to start April: derby at Anfield, Bournemouth, & at Stoke. Without Europe or cups, this team should be able to stay fresh and run the legs off other teams.

Finally another match! Here's hoping the long layoff and "second training camp" will serve the side well in terms of health* and energy.

*Except Henderson is out today and possible against Arsenal wth a "bruised foot."

Liverpool (gegenpress): Mignolet; Clyne, Matip, Lucas, Milner; Can, Wijnaldum, Lallana; Mane, Firmino, Coutinho. Subs: Karius, Moreno, Klavan, Stewart, Alexander-Arnold, Origi, Woodburn.

Leicester City:
Schmeichel; Simpson, Morgan, Huth, Fuchs; Mahrez, Drinkwater, Ndidi, Albrighton; Okazaki, Vardy. Subs: Chilwell, King, Amartey, Slimani, Zieler, Gray, Ulloa.

It's Leicester's first game without Ranieri. Let's see how they respond.

Edit: Well it looks like Leicester are responding energetically for first 10 minutes.

Atrocious play by Wijnaldum to give it away in midfield, Vardy doesn't miss from there. It'd be 3-0 if not for Mignolet.

Yeesh. Bad to worse, a world-class volley from Drinkwater

Saw this coming a mile away. Leicester has been sleepwalking for 5 months, and the second the manager is canned they wake up.

I can't believe how poor they look. Not that this is entirely on Lucas, but with Klavan on the bench I can't believe Klopp's decision to select Lucas

Phil pulls one back

Emre Can with one of the more obvious foul throws you'll see. How does a professional player manage to do that?

Carragher is spot on in his assessment of the tactics:
“Sometimes as a Liverpool fan, when it's going well you kid yourself about certain things.

“I love James Milner, but he's not a left-back.

“Lucas Leiva I'm sure is getting plenty of stick off Liverpool fans tonight, but I actually felt so sorry for that lad. I was happy when he came off.

“I have no blame for him. He shouldn't be playing there. It's like putting me at right wing and saying 'why aren't you beating your full-back?'.

“I can't. There's no way I can possibly do it. And there's no way Lucas can catch Vardy in a sprint if the team are pushed up to the halfway line.

“He was put in a position that completely exposed him. There should be no blame attached to him.

“The blame for that should be with Jurgen Klopp for putting him in that position.”
...
“My other problem is Liverpool always play the same way,” he said. “What's wrong with Liverpool going to a side like Leicester and saying 'okay, what do they want to do to us?'. Why couldn't they let Morgan and Huth have the ball and use Mane and his pace?

“Instead, Liverpool's two centre-backs are on the halfway line and Leicester break. (Burnley's) Andre Gray did it, Niasse did it for Hull and it was the same for Jamie Vardy tonight.

Wow, Carragher voiced my concerns very eloquently.

Lucas didn't belong. Less concerned about Milner. The Henderson injury is unfortunate as the dropoff to Can is immense, and having the German in front of Lucas offered absolutely no protection.

Pep was destroyed for City's display against Leicester, I think Klopp should get the same. I don't want him fired by any stretch, but with two weeks to prepare they looked like they had no idea who the opponent was. I defended Leicester's strength in another thread last week when Ranieri was canned. The counterattack, while it gained them a ton of points early in the season, wasn't what won them the league in the second half of the year. They absolutely can grind, though it's less comfortable. Klopp allowed them to get back to their preferred style in a big way. The warning signs were there very early, and if not for Mignolet things could have gotten even more out of hand. Maybe an early goal would have forced a tactics change that would have benefited them more. Who knows.

Unfortunately, this performance was 100% predictable. You can't press with that high of a line with a make shift central defender against a team who won the league last year on long balls and a vertical game - played right to the strengths of a team itching for a reason to produce a good performance. The lack of depth in this squad is alarming, to the point of being criminal.....calling the squad thin is an injustice the depth of thin!

Is it bad that I'm less confident against Middlesborough or Watford than I am against Arsenal or Chelsea?

Given the results, it would be strange to feel any differently. Still unbeaten in 9 games against the rest of the top 6. Only 1 game left, against City.

Good way to bounce back after a rough game at liecester. To come back home and beat Arsenal is all the more sweeter knowing that we take their champions league spot.

Dropping points in both games to Burnley is nuts. Yet, they're going to have to improve considerably to avoid dropping 5-6 points to them.

Also, the NBC Sports app blows for giving me yet another Chevy ad IN THE MIDDLE OF THE MATCH.

This team needs to gut out these ugly wins, especially against lesser sides that are laying deep and waiting for the counter.

Easy one this weekend against ManCity, then the derby, and finally a rough challenge against Bournemouth. Gonna be a fun three weeks.

So Liverpool finish undefeated against the other top-4 sides and Arsenal (5-5-0). This also means they're a very un-Chelsea-like 11-3-5 against the rest of the league. They're 4 points clear at the moment, but ManU have 3 games in hand.

The derby is up next, and the Bournemouth and Stoke within the following week. Seven points would go a long ways towards solidifying their standing.

Man U only have 2 games in hand. Also, United still gave games against City, Chelsea, Arsenal and Spurs.

Really, a lot of "what-ifs" yesterday.

I can't even rationally discuss Lallana's miss. Head was up, ready to celebrate. Seems that simple. Coincidentally, the lead up, while pretty, could be argued to have been the wrong decision on Lallana's part. He cut left, toward Firmino and the defenders. Firmino had to change his run to a less dangerous position. If he cuts right, he opens up space for Wijnaldum to run into. It worked out spectacularly well, though, other than the finish. It's unfortunate that it'll be an enduring image- Lallana had a fantastic game. He broke up countless attacks, sneaking deep into his own defense for timely interventions. He looked like a less physical box to box guy yesterday- just an awesome display.

It was a tale of two halves for Coutinho and Firmino. Unfortunately, they weren't concurrent. Coutinho looked awful in the first half, then transitioned. He's apparently not up to match fitness. Given their respective form at the time of the Origi substitution, Firmino should have been the one off. Origi looked clueless on the right wing, which seems forgivable.

Firmino had an especially boneheaded sequence toward the end. He busted a cross into a thicket of defenders instead of cutting the ball back to the space above the penalty spot where he had two guys ready to shoot. The ball bounced back and he took an equally stupid shot from an oblique angle into the side netting. Two awful decisions, back to back, that cost his team a beautiful chance.

It was also nice to see Sterling be a complete and utter pile of crap. Offside after offside, pointless runs, lots of whining (whinging?)... He has absolutely nothing beyond the right footed dribble into space, then the eyes-closed cross or worm-burning, weak shot. Talk about selling high!

Yeah, both teams were slipping all over the place. Aguero should have scored a second to win it after a great bit of dribbling, but slipped just before he could have passed it into the corner of the net (the play that led to De Bruyne hitting the post).

Both teams also ran themselves into the ground all game, so it's natural that it was sloppy near the end. Everyone on both sides looked absolutely gassed at the final whistle.

Legends from Liverpool and Real Madrid played a charity game at Anfield yesterday.

Gerrard's still got it.

The Reds did a pretty good imitation of this year's team, going up 4-0, then giving up 3 goals late to barely hold on. Michael Owen, John Aldridge, Robbie Fowler, and Gerrard scored for LFC. Steve McManaman, Jerzy Dudek, and Owen had stints playing for both sides, and somehow Salif Diao got past security and was in the Liverpool squad.
