Agger's been a loyal player for years, and stayed when teams like Barcelona and Man City were rumored to be in for him. If he wants to go back and play for his former club, I can't begrudge him, even if it's for a cut rate.  I would ask for a sell-on clause in case Brondby tried to turn around and profit from this cut-rate deal, but I doubt that would happen anyways.

With Agger gone, there's an opening for vice-captain.

Lucas and Johnson have been around a while, but who knows how much either will play.

Skrtel? Probably the best bet.

Or maybe they go with a younger guy who is one of the first names on the team sheet (Henderson).

Henderson keeps being mentioned as the future captain, so I assume it goes to him.

We were making Ken Doll jokes about him less than a year ago. He actually looks like a good buy now.

Liverpool Offside just posted something that says Liverpool is close to a deal for Sergio Romero to come in and back-up/push Simon Mignolet. A little disappointed there havent been any rumors of acquiring a more defensively sound midfielder..

love that Balotelli is wearing 45 - never really payed much attention to that before, but now, let the brilliance contained within that number be unleashed!

Obviously happy with the result, but there were a couple times where Lovren and Sakho went for the same ball and left a big gap for an attacker to run into. It should have cost them a goal once, but Mignolet made the save. They both play naturally on the left side of the center of defense, so one of them will have to adjust when they are paired up. Hopefully their communication will improve with more playing time together.

That'll make getting Ludogorets for the first UCL match a good thing for their aspirations to advance. If Rodgers wants to pair them together again, it's better for them to work out the communication issues against a Bulgarian longshot than Real Madrid or one of the big PL matches. Of course, the League Cup will offer the same opportunity.

I would guess that the League Cup will feature the heart-attack inducing pairing of Toure and Coates, if they are both still around after tomorrow.

Rodgers told his press conference today that Balotelli had never marked on corners before:
He also had a good line about Sterling's awesome run that ended with a terrible shot.  Said he dribbled through the Spurs defense like Ricky Villa but then finished like Ricky Gervais.

Unbelievably, Borini is still here. He turned down both Sunderland and QPR over wage demands.

Hope he enjoys being an 89th minute sub in League Cup games.

Post deadline addition?

Would Valdes be willing to sit on the bench ? Could he even claim the Number 1 spot? I like Mignolet but he can be rather .. erratic(?) at times

Liverpool set to sign Valdes: Brendan Rodgers' efforts on transfer deadline day might have been overshadowed by the exploits at Manchester United and Arsenal, but it seems that the Reds could yet secure one of the biggest coups of the summer by signing former Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes. The Independent reports that Liverpool are "likely to sign the former Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes next month." The key is that Valdes is a free agent who left Barca at the end of his contract this summer - and thus can still be registered outside of the transfer window. The deal hinges on his successful recovery from the cruciate ligament injury he suffered in March.
Paper Round's View: Simon Mignolet currently has nobody pushing him at Anfield, and no top level back-up in case of injury since number two Brad Jones is simply not a top-level keeper. And landing a player of Valdes's calibre for free would be a magnificent move for Liverpool: Valdes has six Liga winners' medals, three Champions League medals and a host of other trinkets in his cabinet, and was being pursued by some of the biggest clubs in Europe..

Is Valdes highly rated anymore?  I could be wrong but I remember him letting up an awful lot of soft goals in the past.  As a depth move, fine, but I don't think he'd displace Mignolet.

I don't know how qualified I am to judge keepers, but to my untrained eye he seemed to have dipped in form in the 2012-13 season.  He let up weak goals and some of his decision making with respect to distribution was questionable.  I often find it difficult to tell if a keeper's form has dipped or if his defense is letting him down.  The whole club really sputtered in the second half of that season.

He regained his form in 2013-14, and was playing some of his best soccer when he got injured.  If his knee is 100%, he would be a great add for any team.

The Hype Saga videos have the potential to be the best thing about an already entertaining season.  Whoever cut Child Flanno doing stepovers in the street into #2 is a genius.

Hated the starting lineup, hated the subs. The international break and the forward look to the fixture during the week were evident in spades.

Henderson and Gerrard starting together behind the midfielders was puzzling. The midfield group itself looked like they'd learned each others' names right before kickoff. No understanding, no sense of collective purpose in moving the ball. Lallana was pulled just as he was starting to show life- I'd much rather have seen Sterling on for Markovic at that point, who looked utterly useless.

Coutinho was invisible for 70 minutes, then made himself apparent with poor decision making. His aversion to 50/50 challenges (or even 60/40...) doesn't seem to fit the mentality we saw two weeks ago.

That said, everything that was done so well against Spurs seemed missing. The swarming hunger to press the ball up the pitch when conceding possession was totally gone. When the midfield trio failed to do anything creative, the forced long balls started and it became a crapshoot. Very disappointing display.

Credit Villa for their discipline, even if their game plan seemed a but reliant on thuggery with Balotelli and Sterling. We're going to see a lot of that, so best to get used to it.

The Ludogorets starting keeper was sent off in their playoff and his backup is injured, so they've signed Canadian international Milan Borjan off the street. He's been a free agent since the end of the 2012 season, but still seems to get a few caps every year for Canada. That probably says something about the state of Canadian soccer.

What, they aren't going to start the defender that was the hero in their playoff shootout victory in goal?

There is a suggestion that they will actually do this and Borjan will start on the bench. In other news, this match is now officially 'Sold Out'.
