So now that his Red Sox career is over, where does Collin McHugh rank in team history? Clearly below Rollie Fingers and Kevin Appier. Maybe somewhere around Hee Seop Choi, Guillermo Mota, Jhonny Peralta, Charles Johnson or Carlos Delgado.
Why are we assuming his Red Sox career is over? He opted out of the season, not his career. He could be back next year (assuming there is a next year).

E-Rod, Eovaldi, Perez, Weber, opener/bullpen game. Maybe Brian Johnson might mix in if E-Rod isn't up to speed yet.

McHugh really wasn't in the picture at all. He hasn't been on a mound during camp as he's still having problems with his arm. His opting out really shouldn't impact anything at all.
Godley might also get some play.

Sorry if I’ve missed this, what is the plan for the players who aren’t on the final roster during the rest of the season, since there is no Pawtucket to shuttle down to? Will is be like the NFL practice squad? How will a pitcher who isn’t on the active 26/28/30 have any chance to be useful to a club in case of injury mid-season?

His contract is up, so the odds are pretty good he will be elsewhere.

There will be players from the current overall roster who don't make the active roster who will continue to work out, I think in Pawtucket

Will that include all (only?) the guys who are on the list of 47/53/60? Just seems like it will be a challenge to have pitchers stretched out to step on as SPs as needed. Lots of simulated games, I guess. But maybe this is the season to try to enact the old approach of Having multiple long-relievers in the pen who can spot start, or be the new “bulk” guys who come in after the openers.

Thank you for reminding me that we signed Martin Perez. Holy Mother of God, that feels like it happened a hundred years ago...

deep inside Guido territory
Roenicke mentioned he may go with Benintendi and Devers as 1-2 in the lineup for the long haul. Very interesting how that would work vs LHP but they could put Pillar at lead off if needed. Get off the Peraza train as it is going to stall.

No risk move? Isn't the risk that we run him out there and he puts up a 6.54 ERA?

Boy, when was the last time I had such low expectations for this team? Probably sometime in the Butch Hobson era.

Been thinking about starting a “how many games will this team win” thread, probably a good time!

From cbssports.com - most likely comeback player of the year candidates. Among them is Eovaldi. Their write-up:

"If not for Steve Pearce's robust World Series hot streak, Eovaldi was likely next in line for 2019 World Series MVP. Can he stay healthy for 10-12 starts this year?"

Uh, what? Eovaldi had that great relief appearance in game 3 of course - the one game the Sox lost. But...

Eovaldi: 8.0 ip, 0-1, 1.13 era, 3 h, 2 r, 1 er, 1 bb, 6 k, 0.50 whip, 6.8 k/9
Price: 13.2 ip, 2-0, 1.98 era, 7 h, 3 r, 3 er, 6 bb, 10 k, 0.95 whip, 6.6 k/9

I'd like to think that next in line for series MVP after Pearce was Price, not Eovaldi.

Regardless, I hope Eovaldi does put up a nice "season" the next two months.

Eovaldi could have won playoff MVP if that was a thing, of course, that throwaway line is ridiculous. I think any chance the sox have this season starts with getting 2018 level Eovaldi

Yeah, the performance in Game 3 was MVP worthy in the sense that he kept the rest of the bullpen pitching staff from having to over-exert themselves, leaving them in relatively good shape to come back in Games 4 and 5 and finish the series. But awarding him the series MVP for that would be akin to giving the 2004 ALCS MVP to Wakefield for his inning-eating outing in Game 3 and extra inning effort in Game 5.

My guess is that the author of that piece was more or less going on memory of the big moments from that series rather than doing any sort of a deep dive on who really was the MVP runner-up. It's a throw away line.

Even with a 62-man roster, Brasier hasn't been fit for anything more than lowest-leverage pitching for awhile now. I will assume the manager knows this until he demonstrates otherwise.

I think the Nationals would be a bit surprised about this.

Lesson to be learned: Don't go off memory when things can easily be verified.

Unfortunately, this is what happens when your organization can't find and develop a successful starting pitcher in a decade. Dombrowski certainly did his part to empty the cupboards to get us a WS, and his allocation of money left a lot to be desired over the last few years. But the failure is one of drafting and player development. Outside of Lester and Buccholz, what starting pitcher has this team developed over the last many years?
I know it's only a part of a broader point you're making, but Jesus H with "the cupboards bare". There was a fuck load of Spaghetti O's and Potted Meat in that cupboard that was going to expire on the shelf.

Where we covering the news that MLB and players just agreed to 8 playoff teams per league? First two teams from each division then next two best records. Sox would be in as the 7th seed based on last year's record. Playoffs?!?

This season is such a weird experience. I still think the Sox should tank as hard as they can, and I hope that the season is completed and they come in dead last. I really do not care at all about the results of this season, so any longer term advantages that can be gleaned are preferable to me than any degree of success.

That said, when I actually watch the games I can't help but root for them to win.

Beni & Devers are playing horribly. If that's their new baseline, then yeah, they need a big rebuild. But let's really hope that's just SSS.

Also, if Sale & ERod are 100% healthy next year the rotation jumps to respectable.
