Regardless of what happens in the WS, and we, as baseball fans, know that anything can happen in this wonderful game, I just want to take a second to reflect on how fucking good this team is.

If the regular season wasn't enough (and it wasn't for quite a bit of you,) it was followed by the utter dismantling of two 100-win teams, one being your heated rival.

No matter what's gone wrong this year, from Mookie, EdRod, Wright, and Sale's injuries, Smith being done, Thornburg never getting right, Pomeranz basically being a negative when we all expected a 2/3, Kelly's bipolar act, Pedey's knee (and forcing Nunez into 2B majority of the year,) the catchers not hitting...right up to Kimbrel's current struggles, this squad has continued to truck on forward. Every player has embraced their role and produced when called upon, they're loose, they never give up, and they've been an absolute joy to watch day in and day out.

I don't know about the lot of you, but win or loss, this squad is up there with the most fun I've ever had watching this game.

Amen. Couldn't say it better. Can you believe if it was 1986 or 88, and we had this team. We would have bowed to them. Even with a 100 plus win team are we getting a little complacent? Maybe even............spoiled? I heard the Pats outdrew the Sox in TV ratings in the Boston area Sunday night. That kind of bothers me a little. A playoff game no less. One of my sports bucket lists was the Sox to have a 100 -105 win juggernaut team to win it all, so I just might just get my wish. GO SOX!!

Since the won 108, I say wish not exactly granted. May be next year. Bring on the Puig/Yelich for now.

This may have been the only kind of team that keeps me from being complacent. In my memory '86 was a joy to watch until the last two games of the WS (ugh,) '04 is obvious, '07 was about making sure we weren't a fluke, 2013 was a complete surprise to me. All that was left was a fun team with no obvious head-cases looking like they just enjoy playing baseball with each-other dismantling their opposition. If you had told me in the early 90's that the Sox would have 3 WS championships before I reached 50 years old, I would be happy, but I really want this bunch to be the 4th. I've enjoyed watching them either way.

Where is the World Series thread? [emoji16]
The prediction one? I'll start it when the NLCS ends.

As far as complacency goes, Boston sports in general the past 17 years have spoiled me. No longer do I "need" a championship like we all needed 2004. It's all house money at this point, but as far as championships I just straight-up want, I'd rank this team 3rd: only behind the '07 Pats and Brady finally getting his 4th ring. Finish the job, boys.

This would be a good thread. 86 Sox & 07 Pats are my easy top 2.

Nothing in football compares to baseball, in my mind, no matter how awesome the Pats have been for so long.
This team is such a revelation. They are good, excellent, flawed, yet unwilling to quit. 108 wins set a record to be proud of, but what they have shown this week takes it to a new level. I am really proud of this team, and I wish them the best of luck in seeing it home in the Series. Take nothing for granted, and become the greatest team in Red Sox history!

Other than 04 Sox I don't know how you top the 07 Pats. Those two years shared one thing: they weren't about a championship, they were about a legacy. A multi-generational one.

I need this one, but only because its not just for me but my 9 year old who eats sleeps and breathes baseball. Yeah he was around for 2013 but was so young he doesn't remember it at all. This season he's absorbed everything about this team, and we've both gotten to enjoy this team together. Reflecting back on how 8 year old me, who ate slept and breathed baseball felt about the '86 Sox team?... I don't want it to end with a loss... he'll carry the joy of a WS win in his childhood with him for life.

Can the ninnies who basically conceded the season when we had to at least split in Yankee Stadium get some type of penalty? You know who you are.

Sox are now 7-2 against teams that won 203 games in the regular season. Now we get to play maybe the Dodgers who won as many games as Tampa Bay.

There are many colors in the Red Sox rainbow, to paraphrase Ween. Some fans are defiant to the last, others basically frightened. We are all still fans, and all can rejoice in tonight's accomplishments.

Lets just take a moment here indeed. JBJ had three hits in five games. He hit .200 out of the 8/9 holes, and won the ALCS MVP. And completely deserved it. What a tremendous team effort; what a joy.

Well, first of all it's football which was a 4th asterisk sport in New England until Brady. They're great, but for a lot of us it's an intellectual wonder without the emotional connection of the Bruins or Celtics, let alone the Sox.

And second, the 1985-86 Celtics were 40-1 at home, which is more impressive than 16-0 in football IMO. And they sealed the deal in the playoffs.

Great run of Boston baseball, going all the way back to the Pedro Martinez trade from the Expos. I became a Red Sox fan in High School because of Pedro and I've stayed one for the last 21 years. I love this team that is never out of a game this year

I started a thread after Opening Day about the games we should've won and it died a very early death, for which I am thankful. I'd like to think that painful opening day loss was the catalyst for the rest of the season, never give in, no matter what. Play all 27 outs as hard as possible and go win the game

Love it!

I am in absolute awe of what this team has done this year. This team is truly special, and will have it's own place in the Red Sox portion of my heart forever. They just flat out refuse to be beaten. They never quit. They never take their foot off the gas. They were supposed to fight for the Wild Card and concede the division title to the Yankees. They refused. They won the division handily. They were supposed to not win a game in the toilet in the LCS and were going to be eliminated by the Yanks. They humiliated the Yankees and swept both games, eliminating our hated rival. They were underdogs (!) in the ALCS and again, go 1-1 at home, and then sweep away the defending WS champs in Houston. I can't wait for the WS.

And Alex Cora. I admit I thought the Sox made a HUGE mistake when they hired him. Not because I didn't like Cora or think he wouldn't some day be not a good, but great manager. I simply thought he wasn't ready. I couldn't have been more wrong. This Sox team was ALWAYS prepared. How to pitch to each batter, how to defend against each batter, how to attack a certain pitcher, how to play in the oppositions ballpark. They were always always prepared. I don't know how Coras managerial career will end up (personally, I think he ends up in the HOF as manager. I know, I know, one year doesn't a career make}. But I can't see how he can fail, given how prepared and ready he always has his teams. He knows what buttons to push and when to push them. He has faith in his guys and stays with them, no matter what. I really think Kimbrel will be just fine in the WS. He knows his manager trusts him. Players need to know that, and they all do. All pitchers struggle at times. Unfortunately for Kimbrel, it couldn't come at a more inopportune time. Yes, he tends to make things way too interesting at times, but he gets the job done. Happy Birthday Alex. And thank you for the gift of the ALCS championship. 3 goals down, one to go.

To his credit, he also had a 4 walks and 1 HBP (in 20 PA) for an OBP of .400 and an insane SLG of .667 with all of his hits being game changers.

Completely agree on the team effort part!

I mentioned this in the game thread, but can you imagine how good this team would be if Dombrowski had kept all of the prospects?

With Moncada and Kopech and Espinoza and Margot and Allen (etc.), the Sox would win the next 5 WS!

Dombrowski doesn't get enough credit for putting this team together IMO.

There is so much I love about this team. Glad to see an appreciation thread before the WS begins.

I will emphasize just two things for now.

One, Alex Cora. I've never rooted for a manager whose moves I appreciated as much. With all respect to Tito, I find myself even more in sync with Cora. Even when I don't like a move up front, I can always understand his logic and the results are what they are. In addition, the respect his players have for him and the feel he has for his team is incredible. I mean, other than the incredibly important addition of JDM, this team is largely the same as the sour, dysfunctional squad that John Farrell ran last year and behold the massive difference. Oh, and this is a side point, but speaking of appreciation and acknowledgment, we have NEVER had guys running our teams of the caliber of Cora, Belichick and Stevens at the same time. I wouldn't trade any of them.

Two, their depth. We get vital contributions every night from someone different. The number nine guy in the batting order was the consensus and obvious MVP. Think about how many players who were hugely important pieces to this last series. Beni's catch, Price last night, Eovaldi in game 3 and again last night, JBJ's RBIs, Mookie's defense, etc. Just focusing on last night, the big blast came from a guy who was on the bench even against righty starters at times, and whose D has been spotty enough to make AC go with an equally shaky Nunez at 3B at times. Now of course, every champion is like that to some extent but this Sox team seems to get essential performances up and down the roster more than most. That they just beat 100/103 win teams with limited offensive contributions from the MVP and batting champion kind of says it all.

For sure; as I said, he deserved it. His first 3 ABs in Game 4 were 9 pitch walk, 7 pitch walk, 1st pitch bomb to take the lead back. Great ABs.

It’s just a funny stat line - I wonder if any (non-pitcher) LCS MVP has ever had a lower average.

They talked about it on MLB.tv after the game. He is the lowest, 2nd lowest was .239, but I can't remember who it was. 95% sure it was LCS in total, not just ALCS ...

Edit:
"Bradley had the fewest hits and lowest batting average for any position player to win MVP of a league championship series. But he delivered a three-run double and a two-run homer to go with his clutch grand slam."

The other side of the coin is if you were told before the series that JBJ would win MVP you would assume at least a couple of game changing stellar defensive plays given his skills with the glove.

I can’t remember one highlight reel catch from Jackie (although I didn’t watch every inning of every game).
It was mookie and benintendi with the huge defensive plays.

I have two six year olds and this playoff run has been so fun as a dad. For all of our recent blessings as fans of Boston sports teams, this is the first playoff run where I have gotten a piece of what it is like to watch sports with my children. It's simply leaving the game on, muted, as we read our night-time books, putting them to bed, and telling them about the game in the morning as they eat apple slices and pancakes. So fun.

Also, such a great team. It's nice when a the actions and work ethic of your team reinforces the lessons you are trying to teach as a parent. Work hard. Don't give up. Don't let negative comments get into your head. Support your teammates. Try your best. If you fail, forgive yourself and get back to work. If things don't go your way, move on and get back to work.

This has been joyful.

Thanks for starting this thread. I'm still in awe how the Sox dominated both the MFY's and the Astros in their houses. They have left no doubt that they owned the American League this year - no more B.S. about the big boys fattening up on the weaklings - when you take out two 100-win teams, one of which is the defending W.S. champion, the performance truly speaks for itself.

And Cora - I will admit, I was doubting him last night when Kimbrel came into the game and thought AC's riverboat gambler act was about to blow up in our collective faces, but damn if he wasn't right. He has done an incredible job this month, right up there with the best of Tito. How many other managers would have gone away from Kimbrel by now? AC has the heart of an assassin and his team feeds off of this - as I wrote in another thread yesterday, all of us were looking at last night's game as a throwaway, 'Boy, wouldn't it be nice to win this, but no sweat if they don't', but every player in that clubhouse completely ignored the narrative and believed they were going to win. Right up there with Orlando Cabrera and others walking around during '04 WS game 4 and shouting 'Game 7 everyone - game 7!'. In Alex we trust ... absolutely.

My son was born in '98 so it was very similar - too young for '04, very into it in '07. He still talks about being at the Manny walk off game and Game two of the Series that year. He's still into baseball and attending playoff games with me which is all sorts of awesome.

The fourth time in the WS in 14 years.... in 2003, I would have never believed it. Remember back then Yankee fans used to taunt us with 1918 cheers? Four more wins and a 2018 series win feels like proper karma.

The only thing that made last night better was my 12 y/o sitting right by my side, bouncing leg, eyes glued to the TV and then sheer joy across his face when he realized WE ARE GOING TO THE WORLD SERIES! Both my boys were there in 2013 when they won it but the 12 y/o was only 7 and the 15 y/o has never been a big fan. Now the 12 y/o is a baseball junkie just like his dad.

The cradle of the game.
Win or lose the WS, 2018 will always be my favorite season - the one my 12 year-old daughter became a Sox fan.

Her first Sox game was while on vacation in California, the 6 home run affair in Anaheim, 3 of which came off the bat of Mookie Betts - the same man who later provided a walk off jack in her 1st Fenway game. Now, atop her Santa list is, in red letters “Mookie Betts jersey”

AFAIC, the 2018 Red Sox have already won it all.

This team has been pure bliss all season from start to finish. The closest of the 4 IMO since '04 was the 2013 team who were drama free all year and hit all the right buttons - except this one stomped on a fantasic MFY team and contributed heavily to Showalter's sacking.

Basically if this team was Game of Thrones this would be like watching an extended episode of Arya and Jon Snow tag teaming Joffrey, Ramsey, and Cersei as they died slow painful deaths.

This has been a big thing for me with the current group. The core group of guys are just so easy to root for, both the stars and the non-stars alike.

The ALCS MVP award could have just as easily gone to Eovaldi or Barnes for their performance, or to Mookie or JDM for their reputation, but was given instead to the team’s #9 hitter who picked his team up in three straight wins and was the defensive cornerstone of the outfield all season.

The ALDS was most memorable for a player hitting for the first cycle in MLB postseason history.

Both have been All-Stars, and both of them have been benched, and both have been demoted to the minors after not perming up to standards. Both would have been cut or traded by fans many times over before this fall (myself included!). But here they both are, having triumphed over adversity as role players on a team that surely has star players, but isn’t defined by them.

It’s a great team.

I am very moved by the accounts of the pleasure parents are getting from enjoying this team with their kids. My family was completely indifferent to sports and I didn't really follow the Sox until middle age, when I turned on the radio and listened to Pedro Martinez pitching as I gardened. So, I am envious of your kids. But also happy for them (and us).

I haven't been able to find a good list of this (it's even surprisingly hard to find a comprehensive list of most season wins by a team), so I may be missing something, and may have made a mistake adding things up. But, as far as I can tell, here are the teams with the most regular season and playoff wins combined all time:

1998 Yankees: 125
2001 Mariners: 120
1975 Reds: 116
1986 Mets: 116
2018 Red Sox: 115
1988 A's : 115
(maybe others at 115)

So the Sox are tied for 5th all time, with a shot at third if they can win at least two in the World Series. Of course, this isn't a list of the best teams all time given extra playoff rounds, but it is an accomplishment, and, more appropriately to this thread, means that we have fans have had the opportunity to celebrate a win more often than fans of any but 4 teams all time, with hopefully more to go.

Add me to the crowd of enjoying this one the most since 2004 for mostly parenting reasons.

My son just turned 7 years old. We knew that we would be moving for the first time as a family this summer in June/July, away from family and from where our son had lived his entire life to date. He has always enjoyed watching parts or all of games with me on weekend afternoons whenever possible, and watching the MLB.TV highlights of the previous day's game has been an ongoing household tradition for the past two seasons. This year, my wife and I discussed having the Red Sox season and watching the games/highlights be a touchstone between my son and I during an otherwise change-filled and stressful year, since it was something that would actually stay the same before, during, and after our move. The awesomeness of the 2018 Red Sox has made that little idea succeed more than we ever could have hoped for, and he's at that perfect age for becoming a really engaged fan. We were even able to take him to his first ever MLB game (in Cleveland in September, since we moved to OH), which he loved despite the Sox losing in 11 innings.

He was 2 in 2013, and as much as my wife and I enjoyed the moment when we learned that our son truly was an epic sleeper (ALCS Game 2, as we screamed in joy/surprise at the Ortiz Grand Slam just down the hall from his room), being able to enjoy this particular Red Sox season/team with my son has absolutely made this the sweetest pennant since 2004. He'll only find out that the Sox have moved on when we watch the highlights together this afternoon* after work/school, so I basically get to enjoy it twice.

Now, all we have to work out is our plan for how much of which World Series games we can let him watch with us, and how to handle the possibility of a clinching game occurring on a school night. I love having this kind of problem to solve!

* - He only gets to watch the highlights if he hasn't had any behavioral issues at school that day, so the Red Sox also happen to have made themselves into quite the handy carrot/stick for us as parents, since he's still far too young to see more than an inning or two of most games anyway.

Steve Pearce. Forgive me if I missed it, but I haven't seen his name mentioned anywhere in this thread. He deserves, or perhaps demands some serious love. Along with some very timely offense, how many outs has he saved? Does Moreland make that play to clinch the ALDS? We'll never know, but this thread might not exist if not for Steve Pearce. He's become one of my favorite players on a team full of favorite players.

This has been an amazing team all year long. Re-f'in-lentless. A total team that really seems to love each other. So focused and composed on the task at hand. An absolute joy to watch. I love them.
When you consider how relentless this team was during the year, in retrospect the dismantling of Houston and NYY shouldn’t be a huge surprise. This team is amazing.

Yeah, but can they beat anyone besides these tomato cans? /s

This one heck of a good baseball TEAM. A relentless line-up and bend but don't break pitching, especially from the bullpen. Despite all the spittle I sprayed at the TV, Cora really pushed all the right buttons.

During the awards ceremony, they kept saying what a humble group this was but I think it's more of, "This is great, but we have one more step to take"

Remember early on in the season with the whole "I'd rather they go 2-5 against good teams than 7-1 against crap" argument?

That was fun.

Really cool reading all the parenting stories. Just yesterday my brother sent me a couple photos of my nieces decked out in Sox gear on the way to school... made me smile big. This team was a large point of bonding with my pop, and love that other kids are getting that experience with a historic run and potentially WS cherry on top.

This is indeed a special group of guys. They perhaps have a little less "personality" than the 2004 squad, who had larger than life guys like Millar, Youk, Manny, Pedro... but this squad has a very similar chemistry "Feel" to them. There's a vibe here that's incredibly rare and awesome to enjoy when it comes around. Loose and Fun... but Focused and Driven.

Next week is going to be fun...

Line up the last hurdle, the finish line is in sight.

Buster Olney started off his Baseball Tonight podcast today with an extended monologue admitting his sins of doubting the Sox all season long, accompanied by GoT-style SHAME chants. It was a beautiful thing.

+1 to all of the above. Mentally they never seemed bothered by much. I don't have any foundation for this but it seems like in baseball the key is not getting too high or low but just moving on, confidently. They are great at moving on confidently. In games, from game to game, and so on. They won in tough parks all year, so it's zero shock to see them do it again. I thought they had the mentality to deal with Houston; the only time I was worried was against MFY, when our collective baggage might have weighed on them a bit. Then they went out and fucking destroyed the Yankees. They are ruthless, clinical, and always seem like they're having fun.
