Let us wail and moan and rend our garments, woe, for Brady is champion.

In the wake of the report that Miami Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill belittled Dolphins practice squad players recently, former NFL wideout Donte Stallworth revealed that one of his former teammates used to reward practice squad players for making plays against him in practice.

That teammate? New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady.

Why dont we take bets on which member of the media is the first to suggest this is some sort of convoluted salary cap violation.  I'm going with Kravitz

I'm very concerned that Brady didn't withhold Social Security and submit W-2s for these payments.

I know you're at least half-joking but it's a pretty longstanding tradition for QBs to buy nice gifts for his linemen, I don't think this is any different.

Umm, Tom Brady is not bound by the salary cap any more than he is by the league's Competitive Integrity Policy.

Code red ordered by Belichick as a way to offer practice squad players more than other teams.

Brainfart on my part.  I thought practice squad guys could only make so much money and therefore this 'payment' would effectively allow the Patriots to go over the practice squad caps.  I didnt realize there was a set minimum but not a maximum.

Maybe they will construe it as a bet: if you make an interception, I pay you something, if you don't, I pay you nothing.  I wouldn't put this past the folks that came up with "at least generally aware" out of whole cloth.

Increasingly it is hard to tell who is kidding and who isn't.

For the terminally genuinely worried, just recall Malcolm Butler and the car. Gifts generally are fine, even in Rogerworld.

Time to move on to something else.

It's a gift, and one not close to the taxable threshold.

It was hush money so that when they got pick-up off the practice squad by another team they would not talk about how soft they were.

This isn't directed at any post in this thread, but one thing that has driven me crazy listening to the Tannehill discussion this week is that I keep hearing it described as Tannehill running plays against the "practice squad."  There aren't 11 practice squad defensive players working against the Dolphins first team offense during game preparation.  With ten total practice squad spots to use, most teams have 5 (+/- 1) defensive guys and 5 (+/-1) offensive guys. It varies based on overall roster makeup and need, but you usually get something like one DL, one ILB, one OLB, one CB, and one S on the practice squad.  Those guys aren't lining up by themselves against the offense ones on a Saturday.

I know this has nothing to do with whether Tannehill was actually intercepted by a PS player or whether Tannehill complained about it, but the media description of the event is driving me crazy for some reason.

Oh, and Brady's awesome.

Oh man I used to love Star Blazers back when I was 9 or 10. The only thing I didn't get is why they didn't the just lead with the wave motion gun instead of waiting until they were about to die?

"Oh no, the Gamilons are going to defeat us"
"Wait, I just remembered - our ship is a big fucking gun!"
<wave motion gun fires>
"Hooray we win!"

So you're saying that the Cowboys will jump out to an early lead, only to go offensively inept in the second half with Brady throwing for 250 yards and 3 TDs after halftime?

Sounds familiar.

I thought the Wave Motion Gun only worked in the beginning and then broke.

Does that make Rex Ryan somehow Deslock?

There was one episode where the Gamelons got smart and made a drill missile that disabled the gun for a few episodes.  But they fixed it.  Outstanding series.  I have yet to see Yamato 2199, the remake, but I hear its pretty good too.

I think to truly capture the WPA of the Wave Motion Gun, you'd have to have the Patriots sign Tim Tebow and make him the QB for the first 58 minutes of the game. Then in the last 2 minutes TB12 comes in and throws 5 touchdowns and recovers 4 onside kicks to win the game.

So with Rex now turning the Bills into a more hatable enemy, will watching them play the Jets be like watching the Gamilons fight the Comet Empire?

Worth a shot. I'd never even heard of that show until today. I bow to your nerd knowledge.

i feel i need to point out that the Japanese live action Space Battleship Yamato movie should be avoided. (wave motion gun sequence was legitimately satisfying but everything else was a massive disappointment).

Doesn't really fit the canon, but I feel like BB is pretty close to perfecting the Cosmo DNA for NFL defenses.

That was a great show.

California. Duh.
I haven't thought about this in about 30 years, but did it bother anyone else that it took nearly the entire season to get to Iscandar, then they made the whole return trip in one episode?
