Guess the pitching staff is going to come back down to earth for a few days. Rough timing. /snark

Charlie Shephard, we hardly knew ye. But, like, literally.

#RedSox announced these moves: * Sandy Leon on paternity leave. * Catcher Oscar Hernandez added from Pawtucket. * RHP Chandler Shephard DFA'd to open a 40-man spot for Hernandez.

I'm a bit surprised Shephard was DFA'd as the move? thought this guy had potential in the pen, correct me if I'm wrong.
He's 26 and has put up about 250 very unspectacular innings at AAA. Maybe you're thinking of someone else, as this guy seems fungible.

This is his second year on the 40-man and he's yet to be called up. Seems if he had real potential, they'd have given him a shot by now. Not a big loss.

And for those you who are interested in more information on Hernandez, there is this write up from Soxprospects:

Age: 25
Born: July 9, 1993
Punto de Vijo, Venezuela
Height: 6-1
Weight: 230
Bats: Right
Throws: Right
Drafted: Not drafted
How Acquired: Minor league free agent (Jan. 2018)

Scouting Report: Light-hitting catcher with major league ready defense. Has good hand action at the plate but struggles to maintain a consistent swing. Subpar approach. Above average raw power. On defense, he shows a plus arm and above-average footwork. Fringy ball block ability, somewhat error prone. Profiles as organizational depth. Still young enough to develop into an emergency up-and-down catcher.

That seems like it could have been written about Sandy.

I'm a little surprised they didn't go with Juan Centino instead. Yeah, he's a butcher behind the plate, but he seems to be able to hit a little.

It also would have allowed us to say 'Santino, come here. What's the matter with you'? when he screwed up.
