Back in the day I created a second user name, DJ Werd - inspired by Sille Skrub, of course. I still like that user name.

Weird that everyone keeps mentioning Schilling in this thread, considering he walked into the wilderness after the 2008 season and was never heard from again.

(Yeah, it's Schilling. No one else even qualifies for my list.)

When I worked there we at the peon level all loved Jim because he was one of the few guys from that squad that was unfailingly polite to us. Clemens and Boggs were the ones we all hated because they treated us like their personal lackeys. I got chewed out by my supervisor once for telling Clemens "I'm here to make sure no one steals your luggage, not carry it to your car" when Boston was returning from a road trip. The official bollocking came after Joe Mooney called me into his office the next morning to hear the story first hand. And poured me a shot of Jack Daniels to celebrate because he couldn't stand Clemens either.
I have to ask, was Dwight Evans one of the nicer guys?

Dwight was cordial. But unlike Rice he never tipped us for carrying his luggage. On the other hand he was always good about signing autographs for us. I got years of birthday presents out of those Dewie autographed baseballs.

After the Red Sox players stiffed the clubhouse folks and other team employees out of their share of the 1986 playoff bonuses, it was Jim Rice who got a couple of players to sacrifice their shares and divvy it up among the unwashed.
That's my memory of Rice. He always gave us $20 for carrying his bags when he was coming back from a road trip. So we loved him. Clemens and Boggs had the idea that Rice's tips covered them, as they'd order us to take their bags to their vehicles. They also charged us for autographs despite everything we did for them. Christ even Sam tipped me $50 one night to help him after Clemens and Boggs ordered him to carry their bags (and they both carried clubs with them on the road). They were supreme pricks.

Glad to see some folks defending Rice. I'll also always remember when he carried that kid that got hit by the foul ball from the stands so he could get medical care.

It's Curt Schilling. Everyone else is fighting for second place.

David Price was ornery and didn't get along with the media/fans here. But objectively - he's not a bad dude. John Lackey was a massive piece of shit to his cancer riddled wife. Manny had his issues.

But there are times I would give up 2004 (knowing the Sox still win in 07/13/18) if it means than Schilling is never a part of Red Sox lore.
I really hate everything Schilling has become, on the other hand, Price is quite the guy outside the lines. I guess it all depends on how much you put on the human and how much you put on the ballplayer. My last visit to Fenway, Manny the Dodger, hit a homer. I applauded while others booed because 2004 meant that much to me. The ballplayers were special, the humans, not as much.
