I feel for the guy. If he ever becomes the Napoli that some thought he was going to be in 2011, it will probably be in a year or two with the Oakland A's.

I am starting to wonder if his days on the 40 man are numbered.

I was saying the same thing last night in the game thread.

I think it helps his cause that this injury is 60-day DL-able, because it means the team can free up that spot on the 40-man roster to forestall the coming crunch.

No need to send DRS $10, I'll do it for $9. My kid had this surgery.

The hamate surgery is excise. It doesn't repair the bone but actually just removes the broken piece of bone. The area where it breaks is too small for the bone to heal properly, so they just take the hook part out, which is useless. It comes out and it looks like a baby molar.

The recovery has nothing to do with the bone healing, but is more nerve related as they usually have to move the nerve to get to the broken bone, and the nerve in play effects two of the fingers and radiates up the forearm. So the recovery is tissue healing and the nerve getting back to normal and the muscle recovery. I'm pretty sure my kid was swinging a bat 6 weeks later, but he wasn't really feeling good for 3-4 months.

He's done for a few months IMO.

Sucks for all concerned.  See you in September with the call ups again.  If he didn't have bad luck, he would have no luck at all.

60 day DL?  That would at least prevent him from being cut from the 40 man roster... just removed to make room for two months or more.

Pablo Sandoval is a good comp, he had them break in both hands a year apart. Came back from both.

Missed 41 games (6 weeks) for the first one. Couldn't find the numbers on the second one. Seems like they can return after about 6 weeks with the loss of power lingering for a while longer. So the 60 day DL is cutting it close.

Wasn't Wily Mo- an amusing comp- out for like 4 months with his hamate surgery? Mobile Google fails me on details.

Wow... rough break for Lavarnway.  Isn't it said that it takes a while for players to recover their power after this kind of injury?  At least he has no power left to lose...

The spot is probably spoken for. Steven Wright began his rehab stint with Portland on Monday. Since you only get 30 days max to rehab, Wright will have to be removed from the 60d DL and added back to the 40-man by June 25.
