It's my understanding that in heli crashes like this people are generally reduced to- and excuse the phrasing, it's from a buddy in the Marines- "meat soup".
On the local aerial coverage there look to be several covers over what are presumably bodies, some surprisingly far from the main wreckage.

Why did he have two numbers? I don’t remember what the deal was there
According to Baxter Holmes of ESPN, his original number came from Adidas ABCD Camp, 143, whose digits add up to 8, as well as the number he wore in Italy. The Lakers star switched to No. 24 in the 2006-07 season, the number he had in high school at Lower Merion.

When I have consensual sex I often leave a number of internal lacerations that are too many to count. This is fucking ridiculous.
The fact that nurse examiner concluded that the lacerations to the posterior fourchette were consistent with nonconsensual sex was odd because people have consensual sex all the time that cause lacerations. Most of the time, the tears observed in a SANE are very small (micro lacerations). Consensual rough sex could leave similar lacerations. They are certainly indicative of penetration though which is why it’s an important part of presenting evidence in a rape case. I’ve had a few cases with minor victims where the tearing is a bit worse and you might see a transection that doesn’t heal like micro lacerations. It’s permanent.

What’s sad is there’s probably a $50000 bonus out there right now for any TMZ employee to extract the victims names before they are publicly announced.

Buddy of mine on cape just said local news reported a former cape league coach was onboard. Coached Brewster White Caps.

Note: sorry - didn’t realize this was already being discussed

I’m not really a Kobe fan but do you think he forced those people onto the helicopter?
Ok maybe that’s a little too strong. My overall point is, just like Roy Halladay, I don’t feel bad for rich guys dying doing rich guy shit. I feel bad for the people that are collateral damage that get forgotten about.

The media coverage is, sadly and unsurprisingly, almost uniformly glowing and reverential.
Was flipping through a few of the news channels about an hour ago. Can't say for sure whether or not the rape was discussed as I didn't watch much, but Al Sharpton speaking glowingly about Kobe really lost me given he was the face and mouthpiece of the Tawana Brawley hoax.

Nobody is going to talk about the rape today out of respect for his family. I'm guessing Chris Russo or Francesa will have no problem bringing it up tomorrow.

Respect to his family? When Nixon died, they brought up Watergate every ten minutes. They’re pandering to their audiences. People don’t want to deal with the cognitive dissonance of rooting for a rapist, so news channels will continue to gloss over the rape, which in turn perpetuates rape culture by signaling that it’s not a big deal. That you can violently rape someone and still be a great guy who everyone loves.

Grammy Red Carpet show on E! seems to be pre-empted by this. Dense fog being mentioned.

I don’t get this. Why not feel bad for everyone affected, even if they were rich. Roy Halladay was flying a plane, not clubbing baby seals.

That’s pretty poignant. Kobe was an icon to so many African-American kids.
To kids period. My son and all his buddies came of age when Kobe was the biggest star in the league and they love the guy even though he played for a team that they didn't root for. He is their MJ.

That is part of the whole dichotomy between those who cannot understand all the love for Bryant given the rape and those who can look past it.

Kobe Bryant aside, because sorry I can’t feel bad for rich guys dying doing rich guy stuff. If that’s indeed his private helicopter, 9 people are dead because he didn’t want to sit in traffic. listening to the fire chief, I feel horrible for the other 7 people that died in that crash and that their families found out they died on TMZ, and all the headlines are basically saying “Kobe Bryant, his daughter, and 7 other non important humanoids die in helicopter crash.” They couldn’t even get the damn number right.
1--Blaming the deaths on Kobe is a hell of a take.
2--You understand the difference between confirming a celebrity was involved versus people who's families might not know yet?

I suspect we're going to see this same mixed temperature response when other celebrities with rape allegation baggage die in the future. The era of sitting by quietly while others write hagiographies of these folks is probably over.
To the contrary, I think this story shows that the noble impulse not to speak ill of the dead can quite easily be hijacked to shut down discussions that make people uncomfortable. We won’t lionize the likes of Bill Cosby or Harvey Weinstein, but we’re still going to hear plenty of hagiographies of bad people.

I feel terrible. Kobe did far more good than bad. People are complicated and he was, on balance, a person that did not deserve to die tragically. RIP.

Has MJ issued any kind of statement? What was their relationship like?
https://www.si.com/nba/2020/01/26/kobe-bryant-death-daughter-helicopter-crash-michael-jordan-tribute

"I am in shock over the tragic news of Kobe's and Gianna's passing. Words can't describe the pain I'm feeling. I loved Kobe – he was like a little brother to me. We used to talk often and I will miss those conversations very much. He was a fierce competitor, one of the greats of the game and a creative force. Kobe was also an amazing dad who loved his family deeply – and took great pride in his daughter's love for the game of basketball. Yvette joins me in sending my deepest condolences to Vanessa, the Lakers organization and basketball fans around the world."

Sure. Maybe family is only part of the reason - another piece could be that there are 8 other dead people and another could be that there are literally crying friends and players on most channels who are grieving. Like the point I was trying to make earlier, I think there's a rubbing salt in a wound argument that you could agree or disagree about. The media collectively moved beyond this and they're not going to suddenly change their minds on it.

and look, I'm with you. But there's some bullshit mystery invisible line here. When Cosby dies, he won't be getting the same treatment. Neither will OJ. Kobe was beloved and respected and a family man and received a get out of jail free card because he was a celebrity.

I don’t know what the formula is. The Cosby rumors had been around forever, and everyone was okay with it till they weren’t.

If Kobe or Big Ben had been charged with rape this year, maybe things play out differently. I doubt it though. Maybe if it was a lesser player or someone on a lesser team.

Still, it’s worth thinking and talking about why Kobe was allowed back in the league. Why he has been embraced and celebrated by so many people since the accusation. And why people on the news - and here - are so loathe to bring it up.

What does that say about society? What does that say to rape survivors? What does that say to impressionable kids about the importance of consent?
