I really would think TMZ would have had the kids thing if true, so that gives me some hope that it isn’t

No?

edit. Talk all you want about him being a great athlete, and a great competitor.

Don't lie and say he was a great human when by all accounts, he was exactly not.
I think that's fair, but at the same time, a balanced take would include all of the humanitarian work he was in fact responsible for.

He supported / supports 7 different youth charities, including his own foundation which runs a lot of programs, including a youth soccer club, a homeless-youth center and shelter, and several other initiatives on homelessness. He has personally granted over 250 wishes for the Make-a-Wish foundation. The NBA even had an entire dedicated webpage to chronicle all the charitable work that Kobe, specifically, did and was still doing.

He was no saint, but he was far from a monster, and did plenty of good for plenty of people besides just Lakers fans. A Tatum joke here and there isn't going to hurt anyone, and we shouldn't paper over the negatives about him either, but there is much to legitimately celebrate about his life.

Lakers host Clippers on Tuesday. If they play it, that is going to be as captivating of a sporting event as it gets.

Jesus Christ. There are really posters here bringing up a 15 year old case? Let the man and his children get removed from the site first.
You’re worried about them reading the site?

The rape stuff is an essential part of his legacy and posters who view it as the most significant part of his legacy dont really need to wait until it suits you or is more comfortable for you to express their views. It is a completely valid point for this thread, to me.

And yes the potential of the kids being involved makes that angle not as suited for the moment but in fairness the part about the kids came up after those posts.

I doubt his daughters being all 4 of the others dead, especially since all of the earliest reports referenced officals calling him a passenger on the helicopter, or said 5 killed including the pilot.

You know what? A little bit no. What happened to the victim in that case - likely at the hands of Kobe Bryant and again at the hands of the fucking tabloids and even the mainstream press - was abominable. I can't believe everyone here, save one poster so far, seems to have forgotten about this. He was a hell of a ballplayer, he did a lot of good for his community, maybe he was a good father and husband, but he was also likely a rapist, and the tactics his lawyer used and he clearly ok'd during that time were disgusting and are a prime example of why women do not report rapes.
I don't understand the whole "can't you let the body go cold first?" bit. Did anyone say that after Osama Bin Laden died? I'm NOT comparing Kobe to OBL. Just pointing out the absurdity of the statement. If you think someone was a bad person, then why does there have to be a waiting period to say so?

At the same time, we all have our flaws, and it's a shame someone died. But I'm much more concerned about how his death is going to affect other people.

FWIW it is densely foggy today here in the valley and was all last night into this morning. It was the first thing I noticed when I got up today, that you couldn’t see a thing.

The nearest major road to the crash site is Las Virgennes. To me it’s the most picturesque road in So Cal. It’s also a mountainous area. If you can recall the opening credits of MASH, that’s the area around Las Virgennes.

If you’ve never lived in So Cal it may be hard to imagine how common helicopter traffic is around here. On clear days one will go over my place at least every ten minutes. There hasn’t been any traffic today however.

Congratulations. You are edgy and going against the grain. Here's your medal. Now get the fuck out. Kobe in 2020 is not who he was in 2004.
Yes, SOSH would be so much better if one of the few women brave enough to still post here would just get the fuck out.

Lots of stories from guys around pro ball that ve did at least 4 hours extra work everyday. Not uncommon that in the middle of the night he would wake up, not feel good about something head to the gym shoot, lift or something.

We probably need a separate “Kobe’s legacy” thread vs. news about Kobe’s death thread. Obviously people may differ but I’m not in a mode to debate his legacy at this point and would rather avoid that back and forth at this point.

Sorry someone insulted your sports hero, tough guy.

But maybe if he hadn't raped a woman, and then ruined her reputation in an attempt to absolve himself - people wouldn't be pointing out that he raped a woman, and then ruined her reputation in attempt to absolve himself.

Get fucked.

Actually, it's exactly the place for that. Who are you people?
I cannot speak for anyone else, but I'm just a person who thinks that comparing Kobe Bryant's death to Clemente's is asinine, and I find such comparisons as distasteful here as some of you who are so offended that a person or two might remind everyone that the guy had some flaws that were really, really awful. But, please go on telling me how awful I am for not "letting the body cool."

I'm sure a mod will be along soon to ask me and Shyness to cease and desist so you can all whitewash the man's history and remember his amazing humanitarianism from your days in high school and college.

Means nothing. But kinda weird he dies the day after Bron passes him for third in the all-time scoring list. Guy coulda lived 40 more years and that probably doesn’t happen again.

Sure.

My sexual assault happened exactly 14 years ago. Does that mean I only have one more year to have zero sympathy for the person who did it? Does that mean in one more year people can act like it didn't happen and that he's somehow now a "good person?"

I'd just like to know what the statute of limitations are on calling out someone for who they are.

This.

The whole thing is tragic. You can disagree but the responses to LuckySox are out of line.

Not many of us are. It's pretty ignorant to talk of a man today about his misdeeds from two decades ago. I suppose those who are have lived such a wonderful life.

I hope they do and I think they will. What a perfect opportunity to honor him and bring the community together because they have to really be hurting right now.

Completely understand your thoughts. I'm trying to take everything people say or write immediately after a shocking event with a grain of salt. I'm sure people will reflect and reevaluate what they've said once they have time to think.

Lebron just passed Kobe last night for 3rd all-time scorer. Lebron could not have been more worshipful of Kobe, Kobe's legacy (to him) and how crazy Lebron thought it all was that he was passing Kobe Bryant, in the city where Kobe was born (Philly) and that he (Lebron) would be forever mentioned in the same breath as Kobe. It was a pretty telling salute.

I have already let you know what a tool you are for bringing 15 year old accusations into a thread about a storied sports star's tragic death. I'm leaving now, but make sure you stay here and guard the thread to make sure that any latecomers know that Kobe Bryant wasn't Jesus Christ. Everyone is confused on that, and you're performing a valuable service.

It’s remarkable how quickly people are to forgive people they like and white wash the past. The dude didn’t steal a car. He likely raped a woman and got off the same way most rich and famous people do.

Feel fucking terrible for all the young guys in the league right now. As bad as anyone here feels, the entire generation of young players right now just lost their idol.

The NBA is the best love-to-hate league because the level of ability is just fucking insane and there are so many great personalities. Nobody symbolizes that more than Kobe who was the 1A great villain for a decade+. Fuck.
The first part is spot on imo. Bryant is this generation's MJ in terms of how much he influenced the young players in the league. I expect that there are a lot of NBA players who are especially devastated right now.

Love or hate Bryant, he is perhaps the most influential NBA superstar of the aughts and I say that knowing full well how great and respected LeBron is.

There's a bit of a difference between not living such a wonderful life and rape. I've done some pretty shitty things in my life but none of them come close to rape.

We are talking about RAPE. Does it matter if it was 5 months ago or 20 years ago?

Just out of curiosity, how do you feel this thread plays out had this been Ben Roethlisberger.

Whether the guy actually committed a rape or not (and no one here knows whether he did), the rape accusations are going to be in the first paragraph of all his obituaries. Are you concerned that they won't be? Is that why it needs to be discussed in every post here?

The guy died an hour ago, and whether you like him or not, it's a seismic death in the sports world.

His rape case was extremely complex. We can relitigate in a separate thread but his actions were closer to Aziz than Weinstein. He is guilty of being a degrading, demeaning asshole for what he did.
