It's real. Holy shit. How do we lose so many athletes through plane/helicopter crashes?

All twitter references are pointing to the TMZ account right now.

If true, then he's dead at 41, with four little girls, the littlest born only 7 months ago. Tragic. Even for a guy I loathed and rooted against and who was far from a perfect person, I'd have wished far better for him. RIP.

Wow, this still saddens and shocks despite my less than positive feelings about him. Greatness is greatness, and he was great all other things aside. RIP.

assuming this is fake? should probably edit the title too.
I was going to edit the title to reflect the unconfirmed nature of the report, but in light of the official report of a helicopter crash matching the details in the TMZ report, I think we’ll be getting official confirmation swiftly.

Edit: And as I was typing, a second source confirms the story.

I only asked because he initially had the link striked through, making it look like he got hoaxed. He did it by accident. It's very real.

Oh my god. Seeing him compete in the finals is one my great basketball memories. I always rooted against him, but always respected him as a person based on his public comments. I'm stunned.

Heartbreaking, horrible news for the Bryant family, Laker fans, and basketball fans all over the world.

I was never a Kobe fan, but this hurts. Kobe has been a big part of the basketball world for the last quarter century, and for him to be gone in an instant, is shocking.

I am absolutely stunned right now. As a 29 year old, Kobe Bryant was the greatest NBA player I ever witnessed from start of career to end. Sorry for game threading.

It's horrible news for actual NBA players too. I imagine Tatum is crushed and quite a few others.

Sheriff report says 5 people died in the crash. For the kids' sake, I hope his wife wasn't with him.
Reportedly, neither his wife nor his kids were in the heli. TMZ has reported on the wife.

Also, the heli that crashed was reportedly his.

Not yet picked up by ESPN. Just reported by CNN, without naming Kobe.
