Minihane, the asshole is way more amusing than Fauria, the clown IMHO.
The midday show is god awful.  I'd rather listen to Rome talk about Kobe.

Delightfully to report, there is no Callahan on the show today.  Unfortuately, Tanguay is in for Minihane.  At any rate, they have been doing some stuff on great song introductions.  Buckley, in for Callahan, picked Lena Horne's Stormy Weather.  For some reason or other, I thought of this tune.  This would have been perfect for Steve.

Minihane was peppered by Tanguay with questions about his absence on Sports Tonight....Minihane claiming he was told not to go in to the studio, calling it an semantics game

Did anyone happen to catch the reason for the feud between Tanguay and Ordway that was mentioned on D&C this morning?

Where did Tanguay come from anyways? He's been on CSNNE forever it seems like.

I googled him but he doesn't have a Wiki page, and I couldn't find anything relevant about his history.

Seems like he's really down to his last straw in New England.

Zo and Tanguay = Dead
Patriots Pre/Post = Dead
Relationship with 98.5 = Dead
WEEI = He's trying to kill it
CSNNE = Filled with people from 98.5 and WEEI at this point, if he kills all relationships with both stations, what use is there?

I tuned in for 5 seconds yesterday and I heard John Dennis talking about how much he enjoyed the women's world cup match. He must really be sober or trolling - really impossible to differentiate.

He also used to do the Celtics pre and postgame shows until he got ousted from that spot as well.  He didn't handle that well either, as I recall, tweeting weird rumors and conspiracy theories about Rondo etc. shortly thereafter.

He's just a very strange and erratic person. It's amazing he still gets work in this town.

He comes across as an extremely creepy pervert too.  His sexual humor comes out completely unprovoked and causes uncomfortable silences.  You can tell D & C are glancing at each other going "WTF is with this guy?"

He and Bradford were on Monday and it was miserable radio.  Two overbearing, completely unfunny guys with extremely high opinions of themselves.

I really don't remember him. I can remember most of the sports anchors from the late 80's in the 90s, I have no memory of Tanguay. Maybe i blocked him out?

I dug up a 5 year-old bio:

Gary Tanguay enters his seventh season as host of Patriots Preview and Patriots Postgame, offering a steady hand and unique insight to the network’s six hours of pre and post-game programming. Tanguay is also currently the co-host of Comcast Sports Net Mohegan Sun Sports Tonight, a twice-nightly 30-minute sports news and opinion show. Prior to joining FSN New England, Tanguay worked as a sports anchor/reporter with WBZ-TV (CBS) in Boston. During his two-and-a-half year tenure at WBZ-TV, Tanguay traveled with the Boston Bruins and New England Patriots and served as a host on the popular Sunday night Sports Final. Arriving on the New England television scene in 1995, Tanguay worked with WGMC television in Worcester, WLVI-TV (WB) in Boston and New England Cable News (NECN).
In 1998, he was recognized with the Associated Press Best Sports Feature Award for his portrayal of the Joey DeGrandis story, a local boxing champion. Tanguay served as an original staff member at Sports Radio 850 WEEI in Boston; sports director for WERZ-FM and WMYF-AM in Exeter, NH; and as a radio personality at WIDE-AM and WYJY-FM in Biddeford, ME.

So Kirk comes back, Tanguay is gone, and we get Glen Ordway which is like trading Mike Lansing for Pervis Ellison.  Why are we being punished, so?

Wait, not getting Gerry Callahan is punishment?  I think of having Ordway in for Callahan as being like taking Hemlock instead of Arsenic.  Either way, it's not good for you.

Minihane on EEI this morning saying (in reference to Tanguay) that is time for the younger guys to get a shot. Specifically mentioned Christain Arcand and Villani. Why WEEI doesn't do this is beyond me.

this is the clip where they are gossiping about each other and slamming other local radio/tv guys

so there is ice between Gerry and Dino...hm...jealous of Kirk and Gerry's friendship?
Wow. Highlights for those who didn't listen:

Clip is John Dennis and Minihane with Tanguay filling in for Gerry.

Tanguay spends about 20 minutes griping about Ordway getting more hours than he does, makes cracks about Ordway's age, tells JD he was more fun when he drank and should start drinking again, complains that Ordway is too old and "stabbed me in the back" (because Ordway is filling in tomorrow instead of Tanguay). It's hard to tell, but it doesn't really sound like he's joking (at least, not 100%). Minihane trying to keep it light. Tanguay then starts going off on Minihane and JD for "not having his back", both profess being powerless about the fill-in assignments. There is talk that Gerry Callahan might have (must have) plugged Ordway to the brass. Gerry loves Ordway.

It's about 23 minutes in when John Dennis starts dropping bombs (I am paraphrasing from memory, here, quotes may not be exact but they are fair):

- JD: "Not sure if it makes you feel better, but if it were up to Gerry, I'd be out and Ordway would be in here full-time".

Minihane says something about how it has felt icy in the studio lately.

- JD: "I have nothing to say to the man." Why not? "I just don't."

- JD: "Now that my likability has gone up since I quit drinking, and I'm not as hated, Gerry is uncomfortable with that".

- JD: "Gerry is this tough guy, and he thinks if you have a problem with alcohol, a problem with drugs, if you need help, that means he can look down his nose at you."

- JD (re: Gerry and his communication): "Everything is indirect, everything goes through someone else."

- JD: "I am telling you, I'm serious: if Gerry had his way, Ordway would be in tomorrow, and I would go to Miromar Lakes. I know that for a fact."

- JD: "I'm here for another two years, brother..." (after that) "...do you really think they're going to walk in and give me another five-year deal?"

- JD (to Minihane): "This is not a pejorative, this is just a fact: you and Callahan are linked and joined at the hip... One doesn't leave the building until the other is ready to go. You go to the bathroom together, you go to get a drink together, you spoke to nobody, you interacted with nobody..."

Tanguay throwing fuel on the fire the whole time, Minihane trying to downplay/make light of it. JD uses the phrases "sloppy seconds" in reference to what he gets after Minihane is done with Gerry. Caller bitches about Gerry,  and JD agrees with them. Tanguay tells Minihane that he wants Minihane's job, and that he wanted JD's job when Dino went to rehab. JD says that Gerry sees Minihane as part of the long-term future, not Dennis, and that the relationship is obvious to everyone in the building. Tanguay calls Minihane "the younger woman". Minihane keeps trying to downplay.

The whole thing does not sound like a joke nor a bit.

Tanguay was ripping on D and C this mid-day since all the callers were 60+ and white. Also how D and C were winning the 80 to dead demo.

Meanwhile you've got Mut, who got replaced by B on the same show, ripping WEEI's morning and midday shows while filling in.

Tanguay, fired by 98.5 for Tanguay and Zo, replaced by GRESH! who was then fired for Bertrand, Tanguay fired by 98.5 for Pats Pre/Post Game replaced by Bertrand.
Mut, brought in and failed. replaced by B and sent to nights.

While they're on fill in duty, they're criticizing the current shows. D&C are apparently going at each other. Minnihane is playing the new bad boy.

Jason Wolf may have been what was holding this shitshow together.

That's where I'm at, there's just enough truth to all of this that it would make sense for Dennis to be peeved and see the writing on the wall with Minihane.

At the same time.... I wouldn't be surprised at all if this were some kind of radio stunt.

Didn't Charles Laquidara do this in the 70's? My father used to talk about it and how great it was. His radio tastes are in line with Chachi so it makes sense.

I'm guessing this is a ratings thing, else they'd just do it off air.

The best news of all is Dennis is retiring in 2017, so the light is at the end of the tunnel. Unfortunately Gerry & Kirk is likely the result.

If this isn't a complete work, I'd be shocked. No matter how dumb we think Dennis and Callahan are, they aren't going to really air their dirty laundry on radio. And the whole "Kirk as the other woman" and "Gerry thinks I'm not fun since I went to rehab" is such a trite and boring cliche. And bringing Ordway and Tanguay into this whole mess is added stupidity.

Like anyone gives a shit about what Glenn Ordway does with his time.

So weird that this happened right before training camp open and in the midst of another lost Red Sox season.

I WONDER WHAT THEY'LL SAY NEXT???????

Now, me being gullible about some things is more than a possibility, but to my listen, that segment didn't sound like a scripted bit, and it certainly didn't seem like a joke. Tanguay sounded bitter and mean and hurt and angry at all of them, at the whole station and the whole industry. And Tanguay really set it off. He was bitching and moaning about his lack of airtime, and about nobody standing up for him for 20 a solid minutes where he wouldn't lay off it, before JD offered the "well, if it makes you feel better, Gerry would rather have Ordway than me" line. And it didn't sound staged, and it didn't sound scripted, rehearsed, nor pre-planned, at least not to my own tender ears. It sounded a lot like the kind of pathological-honesty/DGAF mode that some people go into post-rehab.

Minihane's awkward role in the whole exchange sounded too fake to be staged, if anything. He started out trying to make a joke of Tanguay's bitter fuming, and trying to play along, as though it was a bit. And then as Tanguay started to rage harder, and to make it more and more personal, he gradually shifted from the wisecracking "that's right, Gary, we're all in the bag for Glenn", right through the hurt, "come on, man, I don't have any control over who gets booked," and straight into "we're all on the same team, here, Gary"... and then when JD starts in, Minihane similarly starts through a whole spectrum of responses, from trying to minimize it, to trying to deny it, to trying to pretend they should talk about it more because it's "great radio", back to trying to deny/minimize/laugh off, etc. His protestations about not being aligned with Callahan against JD, and Tanguay's counter-accusations that Minihane wanted JD's job when he was in rehab,etc... that stuff didn't sound like a bit, not to me anyway.

I hardly ever listen to these guys, but my impression is that none of them are great dramatic actors. I found the whole thing seriously uncomfortable, like being in the room for another couple's domestic spat.

You might be right, I haven't heard the audio portion. But the Big Show used to do this stuff all the time back in the day. And it was always during slow news periods. "Uh-oh, Pete is mad at Fred and Steve about something!" "Butch Stearns is hot under the collar about that thing that Steve Burton said!" "Shaughnessy doesn't do anything aside from balancing his checkbook!"

The bottom line is, Dennis and Callahan are both detestable human beings, Minnihane is an asshole who's never going to last in the industry, I am shocked that Tanguay still has a job anywhere and Ordway is a complete nonfactor. I hope on Monday that there's a quadruple murder followed by a suicide*.

* Actually, that's not true, I don't really hope for that. But it would be nice if they all went far, far away.

If I didn't share all of your opinions about these people, I'd encourage you to click the link and listen to the stream. But already feel icky about giving them a click myself (especially if this thing is actually WWE-style gimmick, which I doubt).

And I know who exactly what you mean about the old big show formula of bogus conflict and artificial controversy. This, to me, didn't have the feel of that.

There was no yelling over each other, no fireworks. The only outsized emotion was Tanguay's apparently bottomless bitterness about the smallness of his place in sports media. Which is an impressive act, if act it be.

Today on Dale and Holley they played a bit from mid-day where Tanguay was describing what someone would have to do now to avoid becoming a date rapist and then they had Thornton bagging on Tanguay. What a mess, it is spilling over into every other show on the network and it makes for sucky radio. They are literally daring me to touch the dial.

As someone that has watched way too much pro wrestling, my experience dictates that all of this is a work. I don't think they have a big plan with this or anything, but I do believe that management probably told these guys to start ripping each other left and right in some desperate ratings ploy.

It's more like someone listened to the Sports Hub a few years ago when Tanguay was still a regular, heard all the shit that Toucher and Rich gave him, and are trying to replicate the "success".  In other words, this isn't WWE-shit, it's WCW-buys-all-the-old-WWF-talent-and-taps-the-80s-nostalgia-market shit.

This is probably for a separate thread but with the news of John Dennis retiring in 2017, if not fired beforehand, Minihane trying to get fired, Callahan being Callahan, Middays with MFB a disaster, Planet Mikey should be taken out by the Death Star and Dale and Holley being the only good show on the station, what would you do?

There's a bunch of arm chair critics here of WEEI and 98.5, including myself. This is a tough business, we're not experts as much as we want to believe we are, but what WEEI is currently doing and rolling out on weekdays and the weekends is embarrassing.

First thing I'd do is get new blood on weekends and fill ins. Filling in the Ordway, Tanguay etc is a horrible idea.

Fire Mikey, Sterns, Mustard, Johnson, Danny PICHAD and the rest of that crew.

Fresh talent like Arcand would be great. Give someone like Keefe a bigger role at your station. Then throw a bunch a shit against the wall and see what sticks. Rolling out the crew above does no one any good. You're the 2014 Red Sox, get the young kids some time. 98.5 did this and ended up with Bertrand, Keefe, Murray and a few others. Johntson and Flynn / Murray and Gasper is better than any WEEI show on the weekends ever. Plus they can bring in Flynn when they need football talk during the week.

Try to build a farm system and see what shakes out.

I'd then fire Planet Mikey and then give whatever money he earns to charity, take the write-off and put on ESPN radio on non-Red Sox nights.

Okay, it just occured to me that this is a "work" in the sense that "bumfight" videos were a competitive martial art.

It might just be the case that WEEI is keying up sad, desperate, peripheral radio personalities to fight to the death. A kind of Minihane-Ordway-Tanguay deathmatch makes more sense than Dennis and Callahan just casually and languidly bad-mouthing each other for ratings.

Still, this whole thing is nothing but an implosion, and JD at least seems to know it. He all but announced out loud that his current contract is his last, and that his on-air performance no longer matters. Given his age, situation, and the two remaining years, I find it extremely difficult to imagine that specific line of talk to be any kind of bit or "work". This is not Fred Toucher we are talking about.

I was thinking about this last night and the only time I can recall any real acrimony on the Big Show involved Michael Felger. One involved Peter Gammons (Felger was right) and when Sean McAdam called Felger "Mr. Baseball".

The latter was hilarious because Felger was actually wounded by that barb.

Are you talking about the time Felger asked Gammons a question about Manny, and referred to Manny as "the best right handed hitter in the game"? Gammons fired back with "you ever heard of Albert Pujols?"

Felger used to shit all over himself when talking baseball.

Yes. That's the one. I can't remember what year it was specifically (I want to say 2003 or 2004) but at the time, Manny was no slouch at the plate (neither was Pujols, of course) and this was a perfectly debatable point. For some reason Gammons was just acting like a real asshole when he didn't have to.

It's not like Felger was saying that Ted Williams was the greatest right-handed hitter of his era.

Well, it was clearly personal.  Gammons' disdain for Felger was palpable.  At one point, Peter dismissed him with, "Watch the games!", completely dripping with contempt.  Felger was still fine-tuning his pompous douchebag approach to radio at that time, which he has now perfected.

I love how much Felger hates Gammons and, to a lesser degree, Sean McAdam.  Mazz still teases Felger from time to time about the grudge he holds from the "Mr. Baseball" comment McAdam made 10+ years ago.

Whenever Felger rants about the BBWAA, that's just code for Gammons and McAdam.
